Mar 7, 2010I downloaded an FLV video and placed an extra MP3 file over it. Two files. Total: 30 MBI experimented with about seven rendering containers, and QuickTime renderer was the only rendering container that didn't result in sped-up/compressed video or correct rendering for just fifteen seconds.How in the name of all that is holy did this rendering end up with 570 extra MB?

Apr 3, 2010I recently downloaded Frets On Fire and the HRP Polymer pack for Duke3D...Duke3D runs fine with just EDuke32 and no mods, just Duke3D and EDuke32. But when I try the HRP Polymer pack, it says in Terminal "NVIDIA: Direct Rendering failed, attempting indirect rendering." This is fine...if I want the game to lag like hell, I'm sure my video card and the driver for it support DR, the video card is a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200, the same message appears in terminal when I run Frets On Fire, I think it does with other games too, if someone could explain how to enable Direct Rendering.

Jun 25, 2010I am running an Hp Pavillion dv6000 with the Broadcom card that never seems to work for Linux. I recently talked with my friend who said he found a way to get it work.following his instructions I opened Synaptic and checked the package bmcwl-kernel-source to be installed.I went through the process of it all and it said it had install successfully. I restarted the computer and when I tried to enter my operating system I got this error "Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknown - block(8,1)"
I have previous versions of Linux on my computer so I can still get in to those if need be but I don't know how to undo what I did or why it isn't working for that matter. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I am getting this error and how I can fix it?

Jul 17, 2010this is what i did i downloaded the latest stable kernel archive from kernel.org and extracted the archive into the download directory (i don't think that matters though) then i downloaded and installed the ncurses archive (needed for menuconfig) then i opened a terminal and navigated to the directory that was extracted from the archive and issues the floowing commands

Feb 11, 2010A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.
ASUS P4P800
Intel Pentium 4 HT, 3000 MHz, Frontside 800 MHz/Cache 1 MB
3 GB Ram
AGP nVidia 7600GS/512 MB, nVidia driver 190.53, installed from yast.
PCI WLan TP-Link 951N (Atheros chipset, WLan N, driver ath9 was automatically installed)

Jul 16, 2010Recently I was trying to look into vmware pvscsi modules for newly announced linux kernel 2.6.35-rc2. I compiled the kernel with option: make oldconfig where it asked me for various interactive options and all I did is Kept pressing the Enter ENTER key(Donno if that is the correct way to slect default ).The Kernel Compilation anyway went fine and I can see new kernel at grub screen, booted and it went fine.Now when I explored I found that nor the vmware_balloon and vmw_pvscsi modules are present which means I need to install these modules.I came to know that recently a new version of the vmware memory drivers being included through this page:

Apr 19, 2010i downloaded kernel source rpm. i.e kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm for my kernel 2.6.18-53.el5. i installed succeffully above src.rpm using command .. rpmbuild --rebuild kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm it created a directory in /usr/src/redhat
then i manually deleted the redhat directory just because i want to rebuild the kernel source again.so i i removed the redhat directory but now i tried to excute above rpmbuild command again but it is failed. saying: error:cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/sources error:kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm cannot be installed

Feb 23, 2010I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)
When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

Aug 30, 2010I'm attempting to install the driver for my atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet adapter (in my Lenovo laptop) on my newly installed RHEL5 system (it's not currently being recognized).
I tried using: 'make install' but hit an error "Makefile:61: *** Linux kernel source not found."
After this, I tried: 'sudo yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers'
To rectify this, but hit this error "No package kernel-devel available" (and the same for the headers). What should I do?

Mar 4, 2010I'm trying to install the "kernel26-headers" package in Arch so I can (try to) compile the Intel 865G graphics drivers from off their website (I can't get H/W acceleration working with xf86-video-intel, but I know the thing has a GPU, because if I boot a Knoppix CD that I have, it enables Compiz by default, and it works damn well).
Any time I try "pacman -S kernel26-headers" I just get a bunch of errors spat back at me code...
Now, I have tried enabling all the US mirrors (HTTP and FTP), and I have even tried a couple of FTP servers in Canada and even Great Britain. None of them seem to work at all!
Is there any way I can get this package?

I want to install the fglrx drivers , I apt-get install fglrx-driver, fglrx-glx & fglrx-control , The packages & dependencies download fine but when apt tries to install them the fglrx-modules-dkms fails .
The Kernel is 2.6.35.

Jul 24, 2011Yesterday I decided to dual-boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I successively instaled Ubuntu the first time using a flash drive. However, I found that I had made the partition for Ubuntu way to large. Having no idea what to do, I messed around with the partition sizes. Through a series of... mistakes, I deleted the two (the main space and swap space) linux partitions. When I restarted my computer I got the "partition not found" error. So from there, I burnt another ubuntu disk, (the flash drive I used had been reformatted for use on an Xbox) I am able to boot a live version of ubuntu on my computer. However, when I go to install Ubuntu, something goes wrong. After copying all the files, it goes into kernel panic about not syncing, and freezes.
I had looked up some advice on the web, and they said that it might be a memory error. However, Ubuntu 11.04 does not have the memtest86 or whatever, (at least that I could find) So I took out the smallest RAM stick (1 gig, leaving the laptop with 2 gigs of RAM) and it still freezes.
I included the story to see if I did something wrong with any of my steps that may have permanently done something bad to it.I know it does not sound like it, but yes, I only installed Linux yesterday, therefore, still a newb.
OpenSUSE Install :: Time Wrong In XEN Kernel But Right In Desktop Kernel?
Feb 11, 2010I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

OpenSUSE :: Kdenlive Not Rendering DVD
Mar 29, 2011Having upgraded to from 11.3 to 11.4 I now am unable to render in KDENLIVE. I've installed MLT, FFMPEG and KDELIVE with dependencies from Packman.
What is different from my 11.3 install is MLT has moved up a notch. 0.5.10 to 0.6.2. Does 0.6.2 work with KDENLIVE 0.7.8? I would think it should.
I have see MLT 0.7.0 is released but will wait for the RPM to be released on Packman.
