General :: Iethernet 10 / 100 In LAN Transfer Faster Than USB 1.0?

I have an old laptop (PIII 800MHz, with 256 RAM) that I wish to use as my home server: it'll have to serve just two people, so I think that I'll be more than ok as for the RAM and the CPU.The issue is about data, because the internal hard disk is a 12GB, that is...ridicolous! I have more than 60GB of mixed storage and counting (images, videos and music) in an external usb hd. I could put the hd in my desktop pc just to serve the big files through ethernet or let it inside its usb box attached to the laptop.
The question is: which of these solutions will be the fastest? USB 1.0 attached to the server (laptop) or internal hard disk serving files via 10/100 ethernet to the laptop on demand?what about your experience? Is the difference based on a human notable scale?

I need to find a fast way to copy a folder containing about 2 terabytes over my home network to another Ubuntu machine.In the past I have used RSYNC over ssh, but this is far too slow for this much data (probably the ssh encryption overhead slowing things down)I have looked at using SAMBA, but this seems geared for a mixed Linux/Windows network. Also I don't know if SAMBA will be appreciably faster.

Having a bit of a issue with Debian Squeeze and transferring files to the Sony PSP..Hook up PSP to USB port and Debian mounts it..I go to drag a 125 meg mp4 to video folder..Copy windows takes about 10 seconds to transfer it..Exit USB mode and there is no video there. Go back into USB mode and look at video folder on the PSP memory stick and there is no video..It vanished. From another after copy progress closed I right clicked PSP and unmounted it..
It error-ed saying device was busy and could not unmount..Looking at light on PSP i see memory stick is still being written to..i wait for light to stop flashing..About a minute or so..Then am able to unmount it..Go to PSP video and theres the video ready to be watched. Debian isnt accurately showing the copy progress...Its showing complete when it isnt..I have to watch the light on PSP to know when it is truly finished.

i am trying to transfer a file from my live linux machine to remote linux machine it is a mail server and single .tar.gz file include all data. but during transfer it stop working. how can i work and trouble shooot the matter. is there any better way then this to transfer huge 14 gb file over network,vpn,wan transfer. the speed is 1mbps,rest of the file it copy it.

I often have to transfer huge data over our LAN from one computer to another. The size of the files varies and can be somewhere from 2 GB to 50GB or more! The only accepted connection protocol between machines are ssh; and rsync and scp are the only options available for copying over network (unison is not installed). I usually use rsync with "-z" option to copy over network. if "rsync -z" is faster than "scp" for data transfer?

I have a 4 * 1.5TB RAID5 disk array (software linux RAID, formatted with jfs) on my Fedora 12 system and want to expand it by adding another 1.5TB disk. I have added a drive to the system and conducted a simple performance check on it to make sure it was functioning properly:

I would like to know what the performance will be like before I add the disk to the array because I don't want to wait for the whole array to be rebuilt before finding out my array is performing badly. The array is used as part of a mythtv system and has up to 6 simultaneous recordings running on it, so it needs to perform well.

I find myself grepping the same codebase over and over. While it works great, each command takes about 10 seconds, so I am thinking about ways to make it faster.So can grep use some sort of index? I understand an index probably won't help for complicated regexps, but I use mostly very simple patters. Does an indexer exist for this case?EDIT: I know about ctags and the like, but I would like to do full-text search.

I'm using Linux Mint 8. However, internet browser speed is very slow as compared to using the same computer with Windows. In Linux, I've used Firefox 3.5 and Epiphany 2.28. Epiphany runs somewhat faster than Firefox so I mainly use it for the internet.
What I would like to know is if Epiphany browser 2.30 is noticably faster than 2.28? Should I go thru the trouble of upgrading to Mint 9 inorder to be able to use Epiphany 2.3 - as well as Chromium 8?

I've been working with Macs nowadays and noticed that programs load like "instantly" once it has been open and closed.
I don't know if MAC is pre-fetching them to somewhere but it is good to start Firefox right after you closed it.
what MAC actually does and how this could be implemented ? I have 6gb of ram on my laptop. Running Kubuntu 10.04 RC1.

I am using Red Hat Linux enterpriser 4 using two physical LAN cards.There are two different ISP internet lines coming into a single gateway computer. Is it possible that if in our one network we are using 2 MB bandwidth and from another network we are getting 2 MB bandwidth.(Two different Networks) and combine it into 4 MB. In bonding it combine the bandwidth or it do loadbalancing ?
The question is can we accumulate or add these two bandwidth in Linux machine and it sent total bandwidth 4 to the end users ?

using Slackware 13.0, and whenever i trasfer my files to USB, like copy or cut and paste, it will show as if file transfered in an instant,like click paste and poof.the whole 1 gig file transferred in one second, and it wont show dialog box of transfer process, and then i have to predict some minutes and wait (till the transfer actually finishes, i have to usually see my USB's transfer indicator light), if i plug out before or my prediction goes wrong, i end up with corrupted files. This aint related to window manager, as same is case for KDE and XFCE tried thunar, konqueror, midnight commander, all of em resulted with same problem.

I don't understand the results of a simple performance test I ran using two basic scripts (running on a high end server):

I would have thought that accessing a VARIABLE was way faster than reading a FILE on the file system... Why this result ?Is there a way to optimize the perfCat.zsh script by reducing the number of accesses to the file system ?

Machine A holds important source data that needs to be backed up. Machine B is where the data will be backed up to.They're both Ubuntu.I want to have an automated process that allows machine A to create an encrypted tarball and copy it to machine B, without human intervention, but doesn't allow anything except copying the file over to a target directory.I thought about using a chroot jailed account, but this seems to be a pain to set up and overly complex. I really just want to be able to have machine A to copy files to machine B, via automatic cron, but I also want to prevent the mechanism that allows the copy from allowing any other actions (copying to any other directory, logging in, executing any other commands noninteractively, etc.). Also, the transfer must be encrypted (e.g. using ssh somehow).

I copied xp disk to debian computer, now cd is cracked want to put on virtual machine. I built computer with:
AMD PHENOM II 1090T X 6 processor
ASUS MB
10Gigs ram
1Tb sata hd
Os Debian squeeze I actually used 40G pata hd for testing purposes. Anyway I want to install xp on Vm. Do I just use ssh or vnc to transfer? Also when I copied to file I'm not sure if any components are missing. It is a registered copy, I have the key. I would have copied xp hd but it's corrupt.

I want to transfer files (a music folder) between two Linux computers. After searching for the best way to do this, I've seen that there are lots of ways of doing this. I know this has been asked a lot, everywhere and all the time. The main problem with this is that there is no clear, recent consensus on one best way to do this task in 2011 for Linux beginners (even depending on some parameters).
So in the spirit of the Stack Exchange websites, I want this not to be related to my particular situation, but more of a guide to others as well on how to transfer files between two Linux computers over a local network. I think a wiki would be useful for many.

I am transferring a file from a linux pc going to a windows ftp server using "ftp put". My file is a zip file that includes .txt files inside it. Here is what's happening when I transferred this file :I used ftp put for transferring and found that my transferred zip file was corrupted and couldn't be opened on the ftp server.I found the solution for this on the internet. I needed to use 'binary' to make it right.
I transferred again using binary and then ftp put the zip file onto the other end. Yes, it worked. My zip file wasn't corrupted anymore and I could already opened it on the ftp server. But the problem remains on the .txt files inside it. Converting the file into binary made my .txt files to be distorted and unreadable. I read from the internet that .txt files need to use Ascii instead of Binary to be readable, but if I use ascii it would cause my zip file to be corrupted again. I need to successfully transfer a zip file that contains .txt files using ftp put.

Is there possibility to restart stopped job from another terminal? I know this works with screen but is there way how to do without it?
I was trying to achieve it by sending signals with kill:

i'm using Fedora 13 with wireless card: Intel 622 ANHMW i'm testing the roaming quility under F13, if i set 3 ap's with same SSID "51g" and different channel "1" "6" "11" I can roaming from ap's when the strength of ap is less than 50%(maybe) but if the strength of ap1 is greater than 70%(maybe) ,
i can't roaming to another ap2 although the laptop just put beside ap2
1. can i set some files that indicate what strength F13 will detect another ap ?
2. when the ap's strength less than a value, it take about 30's or more to detect & transfer from weak ap to strength ap, does that situation normal? or how to speed up the ap's roaming?
