ow do you remotely shutdown an XP host from a linux machine? I know that you can use shutdown /s /f /m IP_GOES_HEREFrom windows, but how would you do that from linux? (wine does not port the shutdown command)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to shutdown a remote XP machine but cannot get it to budge. I did the following on the Windows box:
Ensured no firewall
Started Remote Registry Editing service
Shared a network drive (to enable file sharing?)
Created a user 'shutdown' specifically for shutting down
Added 'shutdown' to Administrators group
Added 'shutdown' to the list of allowed shutdown users in gpedit.msc
Here's what I have tried:
From Windows 7 box:
shutdown -m computer (Access denied message)
psshutdown -m computer (Access denied message)
runas /user:computershutdown "cmd /K shutdown -m computer (access denied)
runas /user:shutdown "cmd /K shutdown -m computer (access denied)
From Linux box:
net rpc shutdown -I computer -U user%password (says shutdown succeeded) rpcclient -I x.x.x.x -c shutdown -U user (gives usage message)
I have a VPS by my host running on a linux server, and they have given me SSH access. Is it possible to remote desktop into the server, like you can on Windows, so that I can physcially click on things rather than having to use SSH commands?
Surely this must be running on Fedora or Ubuntu etc. so there is some type of OS. You would probably have to install something on the servers end I suppose but just want to know if its possible and what the options are.
I have looked for clues in the sshd.conf etc. But I can't really find anything that give me a hint of why fedora 14 keeps blocking my access.I get all the way into the ssh interface.

So it's not a firewall problem and the port forwarding is working fine. I am using putty to access the machine remote.Anyone have any ideas of what I need to set in ssh or sshd.conf. I am expecting to login with password not with keys.

sudo shutdown -h from terminal
I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.

I tried "noacpi"
I tried "noacpi nolapic"
I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.
Whenever I put ssh into remote machine am getting the following messages. Write Failed: Broken Pipe (After logged into that machine ) Read Socket Failed: Connection reset by peer (While trying to log in ) Also known_hosts file is changed frequently.

He has VISTA HOME EDITION, Which as far as the internet tells me ... cannot do RA without a third party software. But he says he found it and sent the invite to my email. I have already download rdesk (I think that's what I want) so I can initiate a RA from terminal with IP or server URL, But everytime I try to access his through IP it says:

Other then this I have no idea what to do. I have never done remote with a Linux and a MS system ...
(By the way, I am running Dreamlinux which is Debian based. It is the latest -far as I know- which is 3.5 built on Lenny stable. My desktop session is Xfce, but I can enable KDE or GNOME for applications that may need it. My cousin and I are 100 miles apart at the moment so this seems to be our only option.

I need to create an automated backup scheme so I created another Ubuntu instance on my local network which is hosted in a virtual environment. I managed to transfer the necessary files between 2 machines on the same network using the rsync command:
rsync -azvv -e ssh /home/path/folder1/ remoteuser@remotehost.remotedomain:/home/path/folder2
How can I do the same thing but transferring files from my Amazon server to my local server? Is there a way I can achieve this with port forwarding, or by VPN, or anything else? It doesn't have to be rsync. If you know about a better method, kindly let me know.

Seems to be working fine for everything I need, and with KDM instead of GDM, I'm even able to log in as root to Gnome.Which leads me to the problem. Logging in as root and I get the shutdown menu options in the Gnome "start menu". Log in as anyone else, no shutdown options. Logging in to the console as any user and I get the shutdown options.I want to enable the shutdown options for all users remotely. How can I go about doing this?
And I know someone will say "that's a bad idea". Don't worry, this is a small server at my mom's house I set up for her to run some web proxy filtering with Dan's Guardian and Privoxy. I know I can shut down through the command line, but that's just too much work.
I will be running a network of +- 35 Ubuntu pc's from next year on. I have already started setting up remote desktop viewing utilities, but I now need a way to remotely shut down all the pc's at the same time, with a simple command as Admin. Setting up scripts to execute at a certain time is not gonna help, as the online time wont be the same all the time. I want to avoid having to remotely shut down each and every pc, as this will take quite a lot of time.

The server has 4 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration and a dedicated non raid system drive for the OS. My friend isnt very Linux literate so I need this bow to be relatively simple. I have worked most of it out but have a question with regards to remote reboot.
I need to be able to shut this device down through the power switch without human intervention (at the moment when the power switch is pushed the server asks to confirm shutdown) the server wont have a Monitor connected so this isn't practical. Is it possible to use the power switch to do an clean, immediate shutdown?
The other option is shutdown through a web page is this something that has been done before? I know he can do it through terminal by issuing a shutdown now command but as I said this guy wants something simple. I don't really want to explain everytime he needs to shut the Server down how to do it if he can just do it via a website or even with the power button.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed for some time now and I don't boot my Win7 machine in weeks!I love how solid, robust it is... and also how good it looks.Love the features like Ubuntu One (use it a lot!) and the Software Center. I'm 95% converted and I would be 100% if it weren't for 2 issues:
1 - The machine won't shutdown. Rebooting works fine but shutdown it just hangs... Kinda sucks having to press the Power Off button every time...
2 - I'm on a laptop but it doesn't recognize my battery. All I get is a "electric ray" on the panel. Even if I remove AC power it still does the same... No charging information, nothing... I tried
