I want to be able to check the contents of a text file for a specific string and remove it from the file from the command prompt. I would basically be searching through a number of files and if a specific string is found I would like it removed automatically. pretty much a find and replace, were the replace is nothing. any one got any ideas on how you would do this. I already have the search part sorted just need to be able to remove the string I don't want from the multiple files.

Many folders within a subdirectory some of which have lots of data in and some of which have only one specific file called produkt.fil inside.I need a command to find and delete those folders that contain ONLY the file produkt.fil - if other files exist (doesnt matter what they are) then they should be left alone. Note: produkt.fil exists in all of the folders always.

I have a file called Regions.ini that looks like this:
Code:
[Granite]
RegionUUID = 54ab7cd2-0e70-49b7-8020-8dbeb84c08d0
Location = 9991,10007
InternalAddress = 0.0.0.0
InternalPort = 9001
AllowAlternatePorts = False
ExternalHostName = 71.171.21.9
[Syenite]
RegionUUID = 8fc56fdd-0afd-4074-9432-0ae8f42b799f
Location = 9992,10007
InternalAddress = 0.0.0.0
InternalPort = 9000
AllowAlternatePorts = False
ExternalHostName = 71.171.21.9
What I need to do is find out what the IP address is after "ExternalHostName ="
After that I will need to compare that IP to whatismyip and if it's different then replace it but that is easy to do with sed. I just can't figure this simple hurdle out.

I have a script that among other things generates a makefile with an error that causes make to fail. specifically, the string "-Wimplicit-function-dec" should be changed a bit to "-Wimplicit-function-declaration". Is there a way to have bash add the new eight characters in the right place (on line 105)?

I have the tar file of glibc-2.12.1, but now I want to edit the SPEC file. I can't find it. For those that want a "why", I'm trying to make it smaller. So simply, where is the SPEC file for glibc? (rpmbuild cannot find it in the *.tar.gz file).

So if I'm given a location of a file like:
How can I just take the type of the file at the end? I know I can use strrchr() for a period to get the pointer to the period just before file type. Is there a build in string function that will just take the rest of the string from a certain point on forward in the string? I know it wouldn't be much work to make it myself, but I figured I would find out if it already existed before doing it.

I am a member of a group which has written a program whose source code is being held in a specific directory (~cs252/Assignments/basicAsst/project) and we want to go through and change the parameters for the function "sequentialInsert." My job is to find all occurances of the function call to "sequentialInsert" and to also list the files from where the code came from. Also, I have to be in the commandsAsst directory when I do this. I have tried grep and find combined together, and I am at a lost.

I need to find a string in a file ... then delete the line it is on, as well as the next 6 lines. Or, delete the line the string is on and all subsequent lines until the search finds the character "["
example:
filename = test.txt
contents:
[foo]
test>test
test>test
test>test
[Code]....
so, in this example. I'd like to search the file for string 'foo' and delete all lines from that line until [bar] (not deleting the line with [bar])

I wanted to find and replace a string from a perl file. I have written a script in bash which runs the following command.
perl -pi -e "s/$findstring/$replacestring/" testfile
where as $findstring = print F_WC_TMP"$line
";
and $replaceString = $line = join ' ', split ' ', $line; print F_WC_TMP"$line
";
But when I am running the above command, i think it is replacing the $findstring with the above mentioned string and hence it contains a $line, it is looking for the variable $line and not finding the exact string. I am confused about how to search for a string that contains $ in it and replace it with another $string.

What I want to do is from a file having block like
<event>
8 3 0.2685416E-02
2 -1 0
21 -1 0
[code]...
The first line after the "<event>" is its process-id, so I would like to have at the end a summary of how many "event" block I have for each type, ie how many
6 1 0.2685416E-02
or how many
7 2 0.2685416E-02
etc etc
I do not know in advance how many different-kind of block I will have, so it has to be a bit smart to scan the file, and make an new "summary" info for each unique type I was using something like
awk '/<event>/,/</event>/{if ($3 -eq 0.2685416E-02 ) { print $1" "$2" "$3}}' file > out
and then
grep -c "$1" "$2" "$3" but with no success since my awk commands prints all lines of each block
Suppose, that in advance I do know the $3, ie the 0.2685416E-02 which is a kind of weight

I've just started playing with virtualization and I started my first VM. I would like to know if it's possible for the host machine to mount the partitions of the VM when it's closed. Right now the VM uses /dev/vg0/vm1 and has 3 partitions on it. I tried mount /dev/vg0/vm1 ~/vm1 at first before I remembered that I'd need a way to mount a specific partition inside the logical volume, not the volume itself!

After hours (literally) of searching the web and reading man pages, I think I've come up with the following:Code:find . -exec grep 'path/to/file' -print | xargs -0 -I new_path mv {this is where I get confused}So my code above is incomplete, obviously. In order to finish replacing the string, I need to mv the new file into the old file's spot. How do I do this, by incorporating it into my line of code?
