The problem is, anytime I create a new file in /var/www/html even though the group is set to web, it is only writable by the original user. I was given the advice of setting the umask to be 002 because the default is what causes the problems. But I would have to do this for all users in that group, and as far as I know it would be tedious having all of them modify ~/.bashrc to have umask 002. Even if I can do it myself with a shell command for all of those users, it still seems too tedious.

I have a directory that needs to be owned by nginx user and I need to access it via other users in order to add/edit/delete files in it. So I created a group called www and added both then chgrp -R on the directory. However I am still getting a "unavailable to access no permissions" sort of error in my SSH/SCP/what ever you want to call Mac's Transmit. ls -a output drwxr----- 3 nginx www 4096 Jul 17 23:56 nginx
have recently installed ubuntu server on a new machine. I have added 3 users and I have assigned them to a group.The three of us work together on a lot of stuff so what I would like to do is to have a specific folder made the groups folder. All files that are created or moved into this folder should automatically be owned by the group. I.e. all 3 of us should have the right to read and write to these files.
I'm trying to do something like thisi created a group called www and made this group the owner of the directory/var/www/htmlso i can read and write to it.of course I've add my self to this group, but it seems i can't read and write.the syntax i used was something like chown :www /var/www/html.didn't workonly when i used chown samurai:www /var/www/html i could finally could create new file.the reason i don't want to specify the user name is because I'm thinking of a scenario when i need to give permission to a large group of ppl and don't want to do it user by user.
So I have the strange task of trying to make something like I said above work in Lubuntu 10.04. But every time I do, the share is not accessible because none of the important permissions (other) can be set because its, well, NTFS in linux. And I know of no way to fix it.Is there an easy way, preferably with Nautilus since the person I am setting this up for isn't a computer expert, to setup this share so thats its accessible and writable by other computers on the network?

i want secondary users can able to change the files permissions of primary group?user MAC is having www as a primary and httpd as secondary group. But he want to change the file permissions (chmod) httpd group files. Is it possible or not? I think its not possible. If it`s possible then let me know how?
I have a group (GROUP) with a number of users. I recently added a new user (NEW). NEW is able to read but not write group files, whereas all the other users in the group can read and write to the group files. The permissions for the group files indicate that all members of group should have write permission -rwxrwxr-x
/etc/group indicates that NEW is a member of GROUP ... GROUP:x:501:GROUP,OLD,OLD2,OLD3,OLD4,....,NEW

Don't know if it matters, but both OLD and NEW write to the GROUP files over an internet connection. why NEW can't write to GROUP files? Is there a maximum number of members in a group that I might have exceeded?
I need to create a group that has the same permissions as the users group. Can I have the new group be a member of the "users" group to inherit its permissions?
389-ds installation completed successfully without any error but when I want to setup it, I didn't find any fedora directory in /opt or any where also tried to find setup-ds-admin-pl script but it is also not available anywhere on server.
On our fileserver, we primary use samba to share files to our users, but a few users have to use ssh/sftp to access the file server. In samba we have the shares setup so that permissions are forced to be the correct group owner and group read/write. The problem is those few who access via ssh/sftp. There files do not have the correct permissions. These people are not the most computer savvy, I'm dealing with biologist here. Is there some way to fix this or will I just have to setup a cron job to go through and set permissions periodically?
jump into a Linux class in college with only 3 weeks left in the course. I thought I would be able to catch on, and go figure, it didn't exactly happen that way. I was given an assignment to do, and I am so far lost it isn't even funny. I need to create a directory structure, set up file security, create a step by step instruction manual on how to copy/delete said files, and create a guide to common Linux commands. How would I create these files in root and share them with the other users? and where can I find a list of common commands and their functions?
Fedora 11. I am trying to setup kickstart so it lays out a mirrored volume group. I have 2 disks sda and sdb. I want a primary partition on each disk 200mb in size for /boot. This is to be mirrored onto raid device md0 (raid 1). The rest of each disk is to be setup partition which grows to use the remaining space, and is also mirrored (raid 1) md1. Onto md1, I want an LVM volume group called rootvg, and logical volumes set up on there for /, /home, /usr, /tmp etc. I can lay this out manually, and it works fine. However, the code below, which is slightly amended from a previous anaconda-ks.cfg file doesn't work.

I have 3 windows computers and just bought linux server. All of them are currently connected to switch. There is also Wireless AP connected to switch and ADSL router connected to switch (yeah, I know its possible to buy a 3in1 but this was bought piecemeal). ADSL is doing the DHCP and I'm not using any other advanced services.
Now, I want to route everything over the linux server. I got the 3 LAN cards for him (one for wireless, one for LAN and one for ADSL) but when I connect everything this way its not working (surprise surprise). I'm following Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO but its surprisingly sparse on the topic of network setup and i dont know how to proceed now. Since the server will be a choke point I presume I need to setup DHCP server on him? First question is: can I use same netmask on all of these subnets? Ubuntu DHCP server guide uses both static and DHCP and am not sure if I should also use static on some routes or is it ok to use DHCP on all.
Also, when I was installing ubuntu server only one LAN card was used (eth2) so ifconfig shows only lo and eth2, but when I do ifconfig eth0 up and ifconfig eth1 up it doesnt look like its working. Anyway, hope somebody has some tips to point me in the right direction, primarily DHCP server setup and if I missed any steps...
I have a couple of user accounts where each member belongs to a group i have created: Each user access the share using their own user account credentials. How can I configure Samba in a way so that each modification done on the share gets the owner of the user and my group instead of the user and the users own group? I would also like the access rights to be 770 to each modification.
In other words, today each modification by "userA" get the owner "userA.userA" and I would like it to be "userA.MyGroup" with "rwxrwx---" permissions.
I use 9.10 desktop with a root user and my own user (timmo), I did not create anything else. Now I check a directory (mysql databases) with ls -l and I see mysql not only as a group but also as owner. How can mysql, not being a user on my system, be an owner? In users and groups I see that all of the many groups only have two members, root and timmo. I know that mysql users and linux users are different animals but ls -l is definitely a linux command.
On RedHat 5 64-bit.I have a group that requires read-only access to the /var directory.I believe someone mentioned SGID and ACL stuff, and I've been researching this solution, but I wanted to check with you all first to ensure there wasn't an easier way to do this. Basically, I just need folks that belong in this certain group to read the contains of any file/directory contained within /var.
I've installed Directory Server (LDAP). The setup has been done according to the tutorials online. Able to access the interface as well. So far so good. The issue I have is with permissions. I can assign file permissions to a user created in the Directory Server ( user not created on the local server). But the same can't be done for a group - alteast the way I currently see it. How could i assign file system rights to a group created in the directory server.
We have a small group of linux servers, currently with local logins. I want to eliminate the local logins and authenticate against the corporate AD. I've been looking at PAM - but winbind requires each machine to be added to the AD. This becomes a pain if we create new virtual or physical servers. Is it possible to have one server authenticate directly with AD, and the other servers authenticate against this server, which defers to the one server that is registered in AD?
i have debian system in which i have mounted the OS on a ext-3 system . I have got a partition of 60 gb , which is formatted to ext-2 partition . Even if I mount , i cant write anything into it . How can i change that ? How can I make the disk writable?
I want to (no reason of course purely interest) get into the internals of my router (which happens to run linux) and be able to mount a drive to which i can save some data which will persist over reboots. I don't care if its only 16kb or whatever. I am guessing it must have some writable memory for the router configuration. I can telnet into the router and get a shell started up (busy box). Also I am aware of options such as tomato and DD-WRT to replace my router's firmware to give me much more access but I do not want to take the risk nor the time in configuring it and would like to retain my ISP's provided firmware. Yes, this command can mount the network folder successfully, but i can only write it under terminal as root. I googled but got no answer. So, how to mount it can be write by normal user?
I'm working in Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop with Apache installed. I have a directory /var/www/test:drwxrwxr-x 5 root www-data 4096 2010-01-04 13:51 test And I've added myself as a member of the group www-data. Problem though is when i go into /var/www/test I still can't do anything, whether it's creating a new file or directory or editing files there. The files within the directory are also 775 and setup under group www-data.
This is the scenario: Active Directory Server = 192.168.0.1 Squid/Dansguardian Proxy Server w/NTLM Auth = 192.168.0.10 The Linux box has been integrated with AD and works fine. Users can authenticate automatically when login the AD or when they access the web through Basic authentication. That part is just fine.
But, when I add a new user, or change a users' primary group, I have to change the 'filtergroups' file in Dansguardian. I tried to make auto this process using the USERMAP and USERMAP2 scripts in [URL].. at the "Extras and Add Ons" section, but both scripts doesn't run properly in Ubuntu if they are not changed. I tried, following the instructions, but got a lot of syntax errors. So, I wrote a very simple script using 'net rpc' to retrieve all users according to the AD Security and Domain Groups. I created an output folder in dansguardian to dump the rpc outputs into files. And read the files to apply filtering groups.
