General :: Find Multiple Strings Into Files?

I would like to find all the files that contains the strings I'm searching.
For example (it's just an example), I would like to search all the files in "/etc" that contains "eth0" and "us", whatever where are located those 2 strings, the important is that the 2 strings are in the files listed.
It would be something like a "grep -lr 'eth0' *" and "grep -lr 'us' *" but in one time/command, so that I don't have to make a comparison of the 2 list of files resulting from the 2 "grep" commands given higher.

Long story short, I got a folder with nearly 800,000 php files. I would like to search each file for a string and if it exists in that file, the file gets copied to another directory. Is this possible from the terminal? So far I got: grep -i -n -r 'ppr-1792' * | cp $1 move_to_here
But this obviously doesn't work. $1 needs to be the file name that contains matching text.

After hours (literally) of searching the web and reading man pages, I think I've come up with the following:Code:find . -exec grep 'path/to/file' -print | xargs -0 -I new_path mv {this is where I get confused}So my code above is incomplete, obviously. In order to finish replacing the string, I need to mv the new file into the old file's spot. How do I do this, by incorporating it into my line of code?

I'm trying to write a bash script to find all lines containing two different strings in many files. I don't have access to egrep so I want to use sed for this purpose.
The files will look like this:
FileX
------
Info:18
Data:76
Contact:me@home.com
Start:1500
I want to generate a new file from these files with only the rows containing Data and Start. Something like this:

I am looking for an application (better kde one) that can search two external hard disks I have and find any duplicate files. I did some backups before to one disk which i copied few years ago to the other disk. Right now I would like some program to check files and tell me if there are the same.

command line, I have a server for work that I ssh into and I need to be able to find multiple files (they have the leading text just the date identifier changes) and then zip the files (with bzip) them and then finally scp(Secure copy) them to another server.
These files are always in the same directory and this is a daily task and just want to make into a script that I run once I am logged into the remote server.

i'm trying all the time to use this (find,sed gnu,..etc) scrip to find and remove this string in all files *.php in wwwbackup/ directory. the script work without any error, but doesn't remove any thing!?

I'm pretty sure this is doable from the command line, but my CLI skills have degraded a lot since my pre-Y2K admin days. The goal is to search all the files in the directory for a very long string of text and replace it with another string of text. The text being searched for is my Google Adsense code (which will be stripped from my website) and it will be replaced with a placeholder so I can easily tack something else in there in the future.
Seeing how I have that long snip of code on about 100 pages, automating the process would make life easier.
If I was searching for a single word, I can see ways to do this.
If I paste the code I'm searching for into a text file, is there a way to:
find (contents of oldstring.txt) and replace with (contents of newstring.txt)?

I am to rename all the files within a directory (which contains multiple subdirectories) recursively without invalid characters.
I tried the coding posted above.
find . -type f -printf '%p
' | while read file; do
oldfile=$(basename "$file")

but I get an error on both of them stating "find: bad option -printf find: [-H | -L] path-list predicate-list"

I want to remove duplicate or multiple similar lines from multiple files. I.e. if I have four files file1.txt file2.txt file3.txt and file4.txt and would like to find and remove similar lines from all these files keeping only one line from these similar lines. I only that uniq can be used to remove similar lines from a sorted file.

I have two text files in the form:1 ItemA [value]2 ItemB [value]3 ItemC [value]Some of these items are common for both files, while others are missing from either one or the other.I want to compare the values for each common item in the two lists, but don't know how. I am trying to develop a method of reading files generated by other programs. I am trying to find the most versatile approach. I have been trying bash, and have been making good progress with sed, however I was wondering if there was a "standard" approach to this sort of thing. The main features I would like to implement concern reading finding strings based on various forms of context and storing them to variables and/or arrays. Here are the most general tasks:
a) Read the first word(or floating point) that comes after a given string (solved in another thread)
b) Read the nth line after a given string
c) Read all text between two given strings
d) Save the output of task a), task b) or task c) (above) into an array if the "given string(s)" is/are not unique.
e)Read text between two non-unique strings i.e. text between the nth occurrence of string1 and the mth occurrence of string2
As far as I can tell, those five scripts should be able to parse just about any text pattern. I am by no means fluent in these languages. But I could use a starting point. My main concern is speed. I intend to use these scripts in a program that reads and writes hundreds of input and output files--each with a different value of some parameter(s).
The files will most likely be no more than a few dozen lines, but I can think of some applications that could generate a few hundred lines. I have the input file generator down pretty well. Parsing the output is quite a bit trickier. And, of course, the option for parallelization will be very desirable for many practical applications.

Is there a way to specify to find that I only want text files (and not binary files)? Grep has an option to exclude binary files, so I thought find probably has a similar feature, but I've been unable to find it.

I found a script on webmaster world that mostly does what I need it to, but have been making modifications to tailor it to my specific needs.I know that //..*/ tells awk to ignore hidden directories, how do I define more directories to ignore? (i.e. temp, var, etc)? I've tried playing with prune before the awk command with limited success...I know that there are many ways to do the same thing and keep running into brick walls.

right now i'm doing a find . -type d -iname "z*" to find all folders who's name starts with z or Z.
Is there a way I could with one command find all folders who's name starts with the letters M through Z, without having to do the same command over and over and just changing the letter each time?

I am fairly new to Linux and was needing some help on a comparing more than 2 files. I am try to come up with something that would compare at least 10+ different files to a master file and give me an output of what is missing.
Example would be: a.txt, b.txt, c.txt, d.txt compare each of them to the master.txt file, than output the missing text for each file into new file.
I came across comm and diff commands, am I looking in the right place or is there a much easier way of doing this?
