In linux, what's a good way to find all occurrences of "string1" in files under a directory and replace them with "string2"?

$ cp foo.data bar1.data
$ ^bar1^bar2
And that runs the same command with bar2.data instead of bar1.data. Now, how about if I have multiple occurrences of the target word? For example:
$ cp foo.data bar.data
$ ^data^index
It only replaces the first data extension. How do I get it to replace both?
Is there any command in Linux which will find a particular word in all the files in a given directory and the folders below and replace it with a new word?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to process a postscript file and I want to change alternate pages by finding the string '%%EndPageSetup' (and then adding a line after it).
I've tried using sed with labels and a branching program to ignore the odd occurrences and process the even ones. In the code below I tried searching for the first and ignoring it by jumping to next and processing it and then to the next odd page and so on.
My logic is obviously flawed here as it doesn't work but I've tried the following:

Which works great when there's only ONE of the pattern on the line. But in a case like the "actual line" I posted first, where there are two patterns, separated by a slash, only ONE gets replaced

Why? There must be (among many other things) something I'm not knowing about sed, that's causing this.
-- I'm currently using the ~ (tilde) as the separator in the sed command. It doesn't matter, I've used / ~ and % with no difference.
-- As a test, I tried putting a different character(s) in the middle of the original pattern instead of the / but that made no difference.
-- I've come up with various similar but slightly different regexs that will do this replacement, but they all have had this same result.
-- I tried the sed single-quoted, double-quoted, and unquoted; the latter fails to execute, and the formers both work as described here: wrong.
I have a many directories each with about 20 html files inside. All the files have .html ext. What I'm hoping is possible is from command line to find some text in each one and replace it with some other text.
Basically what I want to replace is;

I can do this easily with dreamweaver or some other application but because I have 960 pages total to do I'm hoping to do it this way.

I have tried many awk and sed method of find and replce but it did not work the way I wanted. This is mainly due to my lack of experience in awk and sed. The program should loop trough file1 and find in file2 and output in file3 for the 1st (g+h=o+p) set then repeat the same process again for set 2 (a+b=c+d).
I want to use SED to do the following: In a text file replace any occurrences of the three character string ZZZ with a quotation mark "and. replace all occurrences of a comma with a semi-colon. It is the S/ / / command which is stumping me on the first issue...inparticular how to get the replace string to be quote.

If I cd to /etc and run ls *[0-9]* it almost works but it also includes results from within files. My last thought was to try: find /etc [0-9] -type f but this does not work either. My second problem is that I am trying to get list of files in a directory that were changed less than 10 hours ago, using grep, while leaving out directories. I am completely stuck with the second problem.

I'm pretty sure this is doable from the command line, but my CLI skills have degraded a lot since my pre-Y2K admin days. The goal is to search all the files in the directory for a very long string of text and replace it with another string of text. The text being searched for is my Google Adsense code (which will be stripped from my website) and it will be replaced with a placeholder so I can easily tack something else in there in the future.
Seeing how I have that long snip of code on about 100 pages, automating the process would make life easier.

Let's call that original folder "MyFiles". The subfolders contain java files (and those subfolders possibly contain subfolders that contain java files). Here is what I want to have happen:
0. Create a file to print to, call it "output.ps"
1. Find all of the Java files in the MyFiles tree.
2. For each java file that is found, append it to output.ps along with it's absolute path name.
So far I have:
find . -iname *.java
and this finds all of the java files for me. But then I can't get the files to print to a file using exec.
What I have works, but wondering what is the 'right' way to replace the digits with the letters given in this loop? somehow use a case or multiple sed? i thought of a multiple sed or a case but couldn't get it to work

With Windows XP, I just right clicked a folder/directory and pressed FIND then I could search for whatever file/folder name i wanted to. I could even do custom searches based on the size, modification date etc.How do you do this on Ubuntu? There doesnt seem to be a way to easily do it like this. So far i found PLACES -> SEARCH FOR FILES but that means I have to go into the directory i want. Where as I would much rather be browsing through directories and THEN want to quickly search in a particular folder. The SEARCH FOR FILES method in PLACES just wastes more time.
