Sep 11, 2010When booting up the linux distro everything boots up fine. However the linux terminal shows "-Bash:" and doesn't show the current directory. This may be fine for some people but I need to know what directory I am working in and having it displayed would make things a LOT easier.
Sadly though I can't find any useful information about doing this.I found something like "PS1=w" but that doesn't do anything at all. Oh yeah and I don't have a .bashrc nor a /etc/bashrc for some reason. Also when trying to use a framebuffer and using "vga=791" (1024x768) in grub the monitor turns itself off. This applies if I set vga to anything. I believe I compiled framebuffer support in the kernel but I am not 100% sure so if you believe that is the problem then I will double check. That would require redownloading the source again and networking hasn't been set up yet so.
Also what packages does "iwconfig", "ifconfig", and "dhcpcd" come in? Those are the tools I commonly used to connect to my wireless internet but they are not present in the linux distro.

Okay, I researched all over google for specific problem and I think there are few possible problems such as not recognizing Monitor (Polaroid 1911-TLXB) or missing driver (Intel 82G33/G31). I have DELL Inspiron 530. Im stuck with 800x600. I did try SYSTEM>ADMINISTRATION>Hardware Drivers and it searched and found NOTHING.

Jun 15, 2010The monitor is a dell 2009 w (16:10 with around 1680x1050 IIRC) I have a fujitsu desktop with the intel core i5 CPU. the crux is the i5 has an integrated GPU. hwinfo says 'clarkdale integrated graphics controller' and yast tells me the same too, knowing the monitor model as well (with correct resolution) So we have an intel GPU ... but the resolution of the kde desktop is always the 1024x768. sax2 do not accept any other resolutions - he knows only threee, one larger at 1280x1024. But even if i try to turn it on he falls back to 1024x768. this is independed from runlevel 3 or 5. the /etx/X11/xorg.conf knows the monitor and the two modes 1024 and 1680 - but everyhwere else it seems that it is unknown, using default vesa mode... the gfx tools seem to ignore the ability of the higher resolution.

Mar 10, 2010i have a viewsonic VA712b monitor that used to get 1280x1024 resolution on my dell optiplex gx260 that had the intel video card.i upgraded my motherboard cpu and memory..the nvidia 6100 that is onboard seems like it would be an improvement to my old onboard intel but the best resolution i can get is 1024x768
i installed the nvidia 185 drivers and it's not recognizing my monitor as a flat panel lcd but as a crt, also it won't set the correct refreshrate - either 60 or 75.. it's set at 50... since xorg 7.4 no longer uses a xorg.conf file.. i'm not sure how to go about manually adjusting the settings to ones that will actually work. i mean other than buying a separate graphics car (URL)

Aug 12, 2010I'm trying to use the Xubuntu-based BitDefender Rescue Disk, and having an issue. Posting in their forum didn't return anything, so I figured I should ask here next.
Using the default settings, the Rescue Disk starts in 800x600 and complains that the resolution is too low to run the app in graphic mode.
FYI, this servers + monitor run Windows just fine in 1024x768 @ 75Hz, and even higher.
I tried adding "screen=1024x768" to the command-line, to no avail.
FWIW, the default includes "vga=791" but I don't know what it means.
If someone had the same issue, how can I set the resolution to something higher so I can run BitDefender in graphic mode?

I rebooted but still no dice. I saw a video on ..... using a graphical tool to modify the monitor settings but it seemed to be a Gtk application and I rather not use Gnome applications in KDE (not that I don't like Gnome, but I don't like to mix applications).

My graphics card is the onboard Intel g41 express chipset which is - for sure -capable of bringing a higher resolution than this. I googled on this and found that i have to edit the xorg.conf file to add the required resolution mode with no luck. Moreover, I learned that Fedora has dropped the xorg.conf usage since the 10th release, which further implies that there should be a more elegant solution than editing this file. Is is a drivers problem? i searched for a linux drivers for this card with no luck.

Jul 7, 2011So I have a resolution problem. Before posting here, I've checked many MANY forums for similar issues, handpicking certain techniques and trying each. Sometimes they worked, and then my problem came back.
Distro: Fedora 14
Monitor: emachines 18.5" E181HV
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
resolution: 1360x768
My problem is that the resolution will never stretch past 1024x768. I have the image of my desktop in the middle part of the screen, with black sections on either side. Here is a list of things that I've already done or tried:
Install Nvidia drivers
disable Nouveau via grub.conf
use xrandr to modify xorg.conf and add the resolution
different cable
different DVI converter
One day, I logged into my Fedora boot, and after a week of frustration, the issue decided to fix itself. So I continued on, using Fedora and planning on a permanent switch from Windows. I log back over to Windows to play some games and whatnot (I'm not a fan of how Wine handles some games). I then log back to Fedora, and the issue is back. The resolution is messed up again.I've since removed that partition from my drive, as I've reached my wits end with troubleshooting. My linux expert friend tells me it may be that my monitor is just not good enough, or is not sending/receiving the proper EID signature, thus will not accept the resolution, or something along those lines.

Oct 31, 2010i just downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 onto a USB key and am attempting to instsll it next to Windows XP. The Ubuntu install wizard has giot to the point where i have already chosen my language and asked it to install upgrades as well, when i click "Foward" it only displays two options:
1) Erase and use entire disk
2) Specify partition manually
It is supossed to give the option to "Install along side other operating systems". This option is not being shown -si what do i do?

Mar 11, 2011I am trying to install a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10, but I am finding it is not recognising my only HDD in the machine. It is working because I am running Windows 7 x64 on it.
Here are my machine specs:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
Motherboard: XFX MI-A78U-8309 GeForce 8300
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8300 + 8400
HDD: WDC WD5001AALS-00L3B2 ATA (~415GB)
The installation knows when my IDE drive is plugged in, but I want to install the boot sector in the WDC drive.
WUBI also fails to install on this current drive, though can setup the boot sector OK.
Fedora :: 13 X86_64 Nouveau KVM Switch - Video Res Drops Back To 1024x768 Instead Of 1200x1024
Jul 8, 2010I have a server with Fedora 13 x86_64 installed that uses gnome as the desktop. Recently I purchased a generic KVM switch for my office. When I connect this to the server the video res drops back to 1024x768 instead of 1200x1024. I did some research and apparently Fedora 13 no longer uses the Xorg.conf file for display setup, it detects the hardware in the fly when you boot and uses the appropriate drivers (unless one exists in the /etc/X11 folder).
The specs for the KVM say that it can do way more than 1200x1024 so I can't see a problem with that. Also I tested it with a windows installation and I was able to obtain 1200x1024 resolution. The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and the current driver being loaded is the nouveau according to lspci. When connected to the KVM the display widget in gnome wont detect the monitor or graphics card anymore. I used system-config-display to change the display settings and it created this Xorg.conf file -

Jun 21, 2010I am trying the 10.4 version from last months APC DVD (I have used 8.4 (liked it) and 9.4 (failed to install) and I am trying to install it on my spare rig to see how it all goes.
System Specs:
Intel E6850 @Stock Speeds (normally OC'd to 3.2GHz)
G.Skill 2GIG DDR2 800Mhz RAM
WD500GIG SATAII Green HDD
Gigabyte P35 Motherboard (latest Bios)
Nvidia 9600GT Palit Sonic GPU
I boot disc from post, goes through the 1st 3 steps, select time zone etc and it wont find my HDD but it will find my USB mem stick when its plugged in.
I will keep fiddling in the bios to make sure that I have everything correct (it works fine when I installed w7 about 2 hours earlier)
I am installing it without dramas on a old P4 1.6GHz s478, 512mb Ram, 40GIG IDE and a old Geforce MX460 GPU and its at 53% so I know that the disc / version is good.

Nov 28, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from my live USB disk. In My computer, it is showing all drives correctly, but when I try to install using the installer on desktop, it is showing the whole hard disk as free space and no partitions at all.
when I tried 'sudo parted' and then print command, I got the below error message.
Error: Can't have a partition outside the disk!
I formatted the C drive from linux using ext4 filesystem.
How can I make the ubuntu installer recognize my partitions?
Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Not Recognizing Windows 7 / Why Is So?
Jan 29, 2011Background: I dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. I use an HP laptop.
So here's the deal. My Windows 7 partition got a virus a few weeks back. So, I removed the partition and replaced that partition with a squeaky clean version of Windows 7. Then, since Windows had installed, I could not get grub to work. So I booted up my disk and installed a third partition, which was a second Ubuntu partition, which I plan on deleting. I did this so I could get grub back. Now I have grub back but no Windows. I can mount Windows from both partitions. Then, I modified the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to add windows. It showed up in grub but when I booted into it, it says "bootmgr not found." I also did an update on grub and that didn't work. I want to be able to boot into that windows partition.
