General :: Does Have An Accessible Image Cache Sort Of Thing

I know in windows, there are such files that even if you don't have the original, the link is still in place, and you can at least get a thumbnail. My computer crashed with my camera card in it, and...partially restored my camera card? So, the pictures I took last night, have hodgepodged with other files, making them useless. The only possible backup I have for these pictures is any kind of history file ubuntu 10.02 may have made while I viewed them off the card.

So I had this folder containing two open office text documents, I hibernated my computer a few times while I was working on one, then when I came back I couldn't save it because apparently it was open by someone else so I exited out and tried to open it again, but the folder it was stored in turned into a picture of a white safe with a play icon on the top right corner, and when I open it, it is just the picture.

I can't get Evolution to send any sort of embedded image.I've tried in the body embedded images, signatures, multiple image formats, both the exchange connector and the mapi connector, etc without any luck. EVERY time, evolution strips out the IMG SRC tag contents. Before sending it, I can view the email and the embedded image shows up fine.

I like ordering my images my date modified, but Eye of GNOME only lets you view them by alphabetical order.
Important features for me are: Going through items with the arrow keys. Zooming in and out with the mouse wheel. Being able to sort by modification date, type, or name. Being able to right click and open with either another window of the same viewer, or with another viewer. Having a simple interface
So far, I've tried:
Eye of GNOME - I love how simple it is, and if it wasn't for this sorting problem I'd keep using it. Well, that and the fact that you can't right click and open an image in a separate Eye of GNOME window while continuing to scroll images in the current window.
gThumb - Damn. So close to being a winner. Can't pass images with the arrow keys or zoom in and out with the mouse wheel, but I can sort by modification date, it's simple, and can open another window of the same viewer. But those first two points are also important for me.
Fspot - A little too cluttered when opening a single image. I don't really need to see a top panel with the other images, even if it's nice. I can go through images with the arrow keys, and zoom in and out, but no sorting by modification date.
Shotwell - Shotwell's viewer is pretty fast and simple, however it has lots of flaws for me: can't sort by modification date, can't zoom in and out with mouse wheel, can't open an image in another window while viewing it. At least it's simple and I can navigate with the arrow keys.

I've tried what feels like at least a dozen different image viewers and I'm still hunting for one that handles viewing by date taken. The trick is that I'd like to just click the jpeg as they come off the camera and then browse through all the photos in the order taken... without having to load them into a photo management application, sort them in their, then start viewing from there. Too many extra steps for too many pictures when you're looking at a collection that is already organized (using the file system, i.e., nested directories) back to 2000. I need (ideally) a viewer where I click the jpeg, then go next next next through them in the order in which they were taken. Does anyone know if this sort of thing exists?

For our class project we are going to use HyperTerminal to communicate to something we are building that is attached to our laptops using USB. We're supposed to use HyperTerminal.URL...I can't believe that a program that does the same thing doesn't exist in Linux. What programs that can do the same thing are available in Linux and Mac OSX?

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

Yesterday I had a huge amount of updates, including things like the Kernel, Mesa, and video driver (xf86-video-ati). Now my monitors are all messed up! When I booted, I found that the characters are much smaller and higher resolution in command line mode.
Then when I started X, my two monitors are swapped! The taskbar is on the right, secondary monitor, and I move the mouse off the right edge of the right monitor into the left edge of the left monitor.

I'm trying to crawl a directory on a website and basically download everything in it. The structure is simple enough(but there are also multiple folders), but there is one thing that makes wget choke up.Both of the links work, but they are both the same thing. So wget will download the same file twice. How can I make wget ignore the first one? but this doesn't seem to actually do anything. It will still download the duplicate URLs

I am facing a little problem with names servers.have a VPS with Kloxo installed on itI have registered 2 name servers (i.e. ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com) past one month.These nameservers are not accessible yet. I have check the nameserver on internic site and they are registered with the correct IP. But if I access it online via Internet explorer or nslookup I get server not found. And if I put ip address in IE I get the default page of my server

i was looking for a way to stop my menus taking a few seconds to load my icons when i first open them and found a few guides suggesting using the gtk-upate-icon-cache command, but with the any colour you like icon theme i'm using (stored in my home folder .icons directory) i kept getting a "gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid." fault i used the inbuilt facility in the acyl script to copy the icons to the usr/share/icons directory and tried the command again, this time using sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --force --ignore-theme-index /usr/share/icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.8.1/ but i still get the same error. i tried with several of the custom icon themes i've installed and only 1 of the first 7 or 8 i tried successfully created the cache.

I am not able to access yum repository from client but able to access yum from server through ftp.I am getting the below error from client system as,
Client Config:--
[root@Client ~]# cat /etc/yum.repos.d/client.repo
[Client]
name=Client Repo
baseurl=ftp://1.1.1.1/pub/package
[Code].....
I also had remove the repodata directory from server & again configured the yum repository through createrepo but still getting the same error from client.
Is there any SElinux policy need to be enabled ?
I am able to ping 1.1.1.1 (server) from 1.1.1.2 (client).

Now, I have a linux server (RHEL 5.4 x86) in which we have our Oracle Application Instance running. Requirement is to to print reports from Oracle Application erp software to the printer attached to the windows machine. I am trying to configure the printer from linux to print to that printer. When i first install ubuntu 10.10 the other day my entire windows shared network was visible and accessible through places/network ect.i only had an issue creating a link.Now , for some reason i can no longer see the other windows comp or any of its folders but i can see my sons laptop ( running vista) . obviously i still have access to the network and i have checked the sharing settings on the windows machine.

I Want to be able to let my girlfriend view my pictures folder while at the same time keeping my sister out. So I created a group "JessAndI" and made myself and her apart of that group. I changed the group of the directory recursively to "JessAndI" and gave the permissions to 770. She still isn't able to access or even view the directory unless i change the permissions to allow others whether it be 774 or 777. Am i doing something wrong? I've checked and double checked to make sure she is part of the group and the group is the group on the directory and all the sub-directories and files.

I want to install a program (specifically metasploit), and have it accessible from any directory in the terminal. I have it installed correctly, but I have to travel to the directory it is installed in to run it (by using ./msfconsole ). I want to be able to be in any directory and just run "msfconsole" and have metasploit run. I have to copy the metasploit folder to the /opt/ directory? Maybe the /usr/bin/ directory?

On computer, I have apache server, configured at port 80, running. In local network, web page is accessible by my local IP (192...). Although, when I want to get to the page from the internet, I don't know right ip address, since router's one should be local, and also, router has it's own web page running at port 80. So I guessed that my server IP would be modem's one, which I don't know. Sometime in past, I figured out address of modem too, but it has it's own application running. Also, router supports port forwarding (which I guess, is needed), but I don't know how to get using to it. what address from internet should I have? How should I determine it?

My university has a system set up where each class has its own directory for the professors to publish and receive files. These directories reside under a directory in /home which happens to be a mounted disk and are accessible anywhere in the system by referencing ~csXXX where csXXX is a sub-directory within that home directory. How are they doing this and how can I do it on my own systems?

I did a wget on the source and built the apache binaries correctly. Now what do I need to do to get some documents accessible using HTTP (start some services?)? Also, do I need to group all the files I want to make accessible in some directory and make the directory and its contents accessible or can I just make the individual documents available? I will be providing these links to my colleagues and do not want them to be down, so need to make sure that the apache services are up automatically after a reboot. Does apache have some inbuilt support for this?

I created an archlinux vm guest using virtualbox on my windows desktop at work. I'm planning to use it for django development because there are no unix machines available to use as a workstation at work.
From the vm guest I can ping/ssh to other machines in the network, but not the other way around. It's like even though the guest machine has an ip address on the network and a hostname, neither is recognizable.

We switched from unix to linux and we have an old report that extracted data from a database, output to an ascii file and then sorted the results in the file based on different arguments. The report now blows up when it runs,and I can only guess it is because the options for sort on linux differ slightly from unix.For example, here is one of the commands issued from within the report app that ran on the old unix box:
if sort-sequence = "descending" then
'sort -t~" -f +3.0f -4.0 +5.0r -6.0 -f '
else
'sort -t~" +3.0f -4.0 +1.0f -2.0 -f'
I will eventually rewrite the report to store the data in a local table, but I can simply adjust the options to suit the requirments of linux. Basically, I need to know if this can be a quick fix for the short term.
