Here's a question for audio compression nerds. I currently store music ripped form CD's in FLAC format on my HD. I would like to store them as OGG files to save space.
My quandry is this; I need to create both MP3 and OGG files. Both formats are "lossy". I imagine that each format must have different ways of deciding what to lose. Therefore, I am losing some stuff when I rip it in the first place, and converting would lose additional (and dfferent) stuff.
To give you an idea about what sounds okay to me, I believe I can tell the difference between 128 Kbps and 192, but not 192 and 256.
Am I being like the guy who waxes his headlisghts to increase gas mileage here?

Debian Lenny Gnome
Intel Celeron, 1100MHz, 512k
Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:
Quote:
"An error occurred. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."
I put in some time, researching this issue, trying to figure it all out. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Is this a proprietary format issue? Also, when I was overdosing on XP, my media drug of choice was Klite mega codec pack (from codecs.com). It literally plays every media format, audio and video. In addition to fixing the above issue, can somebody guide me to an equivalent player with codecs for [insert any media type here]? I have several Terrabytes of various video and audio files, and prefer to not convert them all.

I need a way to batch convert 720p video files from avc1 to xvid in Ubuntu 10.04. I'm not terribly concerned about file size, but I do wish to retain the picture quality as much as possible. I believe the audio is encoded as aac, which is fine for my purposes.
What would be the best and easiest way to do this? I've tried using Handbrake. During my first attempt, I had it using ffmpeg to convert to MPEG-4, but that just gave me a super-low quality video at twice the file size. Trying h.264 now, so we'll see how that works out. But just in case it doesn't pan out so well, what other ways do you recommend?
I was thinking I'd write a bash script to reencode the files one by one, but the problem is that I have very little knowledge about codecs and containers and whatnot - so I wouldn't know what parameters I would pass ffmpeg/mencoder.

I was finally able to upload a video of my uncle speaking about his time on Iwo Jima. The problem is that it uses almost 7 GB of space. When I try to burn a DVD, there is not enough room. I don't know how to "split" it. Is there such a thing as a 7GB DVD? I have looked and only computers pop up when I google it. If not, what can I do?

I'm wanting to back up my kids' DVD collections because lets face it: DVD's and frisbees just look too much alike.......Anyway, I can rip the DVD's fine (usining k9copy), but 5GB seems excessive to me for a 1:1 copy.
I'd like to know what other people are using to shrink final file size. Also changing file formats from .aviso that I can just use these same files on the little personal video players the kids got for Christmas would be great. They support a number of file types which escapes me at the moment.

The following formats/codecs are missing from your system:

You will not be able to use the selected export profile. You will need to install the missing formats/codecs or choose a different export profile. I installed the codecs already.

I recorded a TV show on my pc using mythbuntu software (ubuntu version of mythtv). It cut out all the commercials and then transcoded it to a nice 40 min nuv file that I put onto a usb thumb drive. Now it's portable and vlc can play the file...on a pc. I want to burn it onto a DVD so I can put it in any NTSC DVD player. Also, the file was recorded at 480x480 and I want to change the size to widescreen (16:9). Additionally, the top of the screen recorded a thin horizontal line of junk that needs to be deleted.
Now, I've googled around and found this line in ffmpeg that should work:
ffmpeg -i V-RedSky.nuv -croptop 4 -y -target ntsc-dvd -sameq -aspect 16:9 RedSky.mpg
The new 16:9 video size is great, the annoying horizontal line got cropped, and I got a nice mpg file...but the audio is now out of sync. I tried ffmpeg with fewer options and the audio still got out of sync.
So, I'm thinking I should try different software. Maybe mencoder. How could I put the above ffmpeg options into mencoder?

Its no secret that flash video performance is sub-par in Ubuntu. I have a Zotac Mag HD ND01 that I have connected to my 40" LCD tv and have a minimal Ubuntu 9.10 installed running openbox and firefox/boxee/xbmc
My primary use for running a web browser is so I could watch live streaming hockey games in HD. However, thanks to Flash's performance (and yes, i've tried the latest versions, even the 091510 version in labs) in full screen mode, watching hockey is not possible because its way too choppy.
Now, on my desktop computer in my office, I can watch the same stream without issue. So, my question is, is there any way to take this live stream (which is using Flowplayer), and re-encode it on-the-fly so I can stream it to my htpc in a format it likes (such as MKV i guess, it can play 720p/1080p mkv files without issue)?
My desktop is a Core i7 920 overclocked to 4.2Ghz with 6GB DDR3 ram, so I would hope its powerful enough for the cause. Also, the desktop is running Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on a dual boot, so a method in either is fine.

Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?

Can I ask for some advice in converting a video (from my phone) which is a 3gp file into something more universal. I use audokonverter for audio files and this gives me a menu right-click option to convert a song from (say) wav to mp3. Is there an equivalent for videos? I am using opensuse 11.4 64 bit and have mplayer, xine and vlc installed plus the necessary codecs. Or is it simpler to use ffmpeg in a c/l environment

I have a collection of music videos of various ages, and want to consolidate the codecs into mp4 files with the following criteria:
1) Retain the same directory structure and same name, hopefully with something like "/music/Videos (Encoded)/" and "/music/Videos (Failed Encoding)/" (Note: Using UTF-8 filenames)
2) Prefer to do this all in one batch; terminal commands/ bash script = awesome
3) Keep the highest quality video without having to encode everything the same (some widescreen, some hd, some with super low resolution)
4) Retain the audio stream untouched (plus, some help on what command to do to convert it to a good format) and, hopefully, to encode with settings that allow for universal apple playback (Handbrake as a great preset for this)

I will need to convert/transcode them into smaller file formats but I'm confused about all the available containers/codecs/formats etc. What types are "free"? Just Ogg or are there others? After installing and gradually becoming familiar with OpenSUSE v11.2 [Gnome], I've been casually trying to get acquainted with the Bash shell and its commands. However, for this problem I thought it would be more appropriate to log in here, since this issue is a bit more serious. Accordingly, I'm afraid that I must once again prevail upon the helpful, patient, knowledgeable Linux users in this forum for assistance. As a retiree and a doting grandfather, I enjoy the luxury and time to take numerous videos of my children and grandchildren, and one of the features to which I've become spoiled in Windows is the ability to play a wide variety of video formats. Unfortunately, "out of the box", Banshee appears to refuse to play any of them. Somehow, using YaST, I was able to get online flash video to work by downloading and installing recommended packages, and it worked the first time after re-booting my system! However, I'm not having as much luck with installing video codecs that I apparently need to play my own video files. I wish these codecs had come pre-installed on the OpenSUSE disc that I burned, but you can't always get what you want. [Wasn't that the title of a 60's or 70's Rolling Stones song?]
I guess where I need help, specifically, is in determing where to get and how to install the best free video player and a comprehensive codec package that will work reliably in OpenSUSE. Would some kind soul out there be able to take me by the hand and show me, step by step, exactly what I must do to achieve this goal? I was hoping to be able to use the automatic package installer, but when I tried it, I noticed diagnostics informing me that I lacked certain dependencies, and that I should install manually, which I assume requires using the command line. I have no objection to trying this, if someone would be kind enough to show me exactly how. I really would like to be able to watch my grandchildren playing without having to depend upon one of my Windows systems.
