General :: Configuration Failed To Read After Upgrade All Using Slackpkg / Fix This?
Apr 22, 2010
I upgraded my slackware using
Code:
slackpkg upgrade-all
At the end, it asked me if what to do with the new and old configuration files. I chose to use the old file and keep the new ones. But when I reboot the system, it fails to restart saying "cannot find which tty". Looks like the old configuration files doesn't go well with the new upgrade. How can I use the new configuration file without wiping out my old configurations? What are the steps to retrieve the system back online?

slackpkg upgrade-all I chose to use all old configuration files and keep the new ones. But after reboot, I got bunch of hardware configuration error and I cannot even login saying:
Code: INIT: cannot execute "/etc/rc.d/rc.4" Welcome to Linux 2.6.29.6 (tty1) (none) login: root Unable to determine your tty name I remember that I made runlevel 4 the default in /etc/inittab so that it can bring up login manager directly after reboot but the upgrade doesn't recognized the configuration file correctly hence the tty problem.

I was updating from 10.04 to 10.10 earlier today when my laptop shutoff in the middle. I fixed a grub error by reinstalling it with a live-cd, and found out I had a "kernel panic-not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on" waiting for me. I booted an alternative kernel and tried fixing things from there, but got "general error mounting filesystem". So, I tried a live-cd and when I mount the partition, it is read-only. I tried running fcsk to no availThe only thing I could find helpful was this."It's probably because your filesystem has suffered a failure - it is configured by default (in /etc/fstab) to remount as read-only in such cases in order to minimise the risk of data loss."

I decided to upgrade from Slackware64 13.0 to 13.1 using slackpkg. I did a slackpkg install-new and afterwards, upgrade-all. My first problem was solved regarding libblkid. The second one, with DIALUPS_CHECK_ENB and NOLOGIN_STR was solved too. Now, when booting, the system says it can't find /sbin/mount, swapon, hwlock and fsck, and also /proc/filesystems and /proc/ioports. It asks for the root password for maintenance and boots again afterwards. Do you have any idea what should I look for, because the mentioned /sbin/_files _ are at /sbin ?

I'm going to rebuild a computer for a friend of mine. I'm going to install 12.2 in it and wanted to see if there was a way to install patches automatically from a cron. I don't think slackpkg can do such thing as a cron, correct? For anyone that set up a Slackware box for someone with little Linux knowledge, how did you handle the ability for the person to update the box?

A big catastroph in my computer,I'm running slackware current Yesterday after finding a security update for thunderbird 3.1.4 in my mail, as I've suscribed to receive newsletter.So I run the slackpkg update and then a slackpkg upgrade-all. During this process I had a message asking me what to do with duplicated libraries of old versions for :
firefox
thunderbird
seamonkey
R Remove
S Skip
B Blacklist
So I decided to remove old versions. Since that all shortcuts for these applications have disapeared from my desktop. the commands for these programms don't work. And the menus have gone from the kickoff application launcher.

I ran slackpkg update, then slackpkg install-new, then slackpkg upgrade-all. The menu shows pretty much every package that comes stock in slackware, and the ones that I looked at are all older versions than what I have installed. Is this how its supposed to be? or is my slackpkg bugging out?

When I boot, after startup and before I log on, an error icon appears. I click - it shows a summary of the material that normally rolls by on a unix startup. One item is checked. It says:
Code:
Enabling /etc/fstab swaps: swapon: /dev/mapping/vg_knox-lv_swap:
read swap header failed: invalid argument
I have 1 disk - it has 2 partitions - one an 83 type with a file system in it, holds the kernel, mounts at /boot.
The second partition is an 8e type contains a volume group logically split between lv_root and lv_swap and physically located on sda2. As I understand it, the system is having trouble processing the commands for lv_swap. I am tempted to mess with these commands, but don't have enough know how to do so and am short on the time required to learn enough to master this subject.

I am running into a strange problem where kickstart installation fails with Error failed to read Rpm header, This happens when installation starts formatting of disk is also completed some of the rpms installed and then suddenly installer stalls with failed to read rpm header.
I have kept kickstart and install media on same host. I have changed the install media from http/nfs/ftp just to check is there any problem with the media but no luck.
However same installation with the same kickstart file works fine when both install media and ks file is kept on another linux host.
I am using RHEL 4 ,I do checked /var/log/messages it does not give any information on the failure and this started happening recently till that i was using the same server for my linux deployment.
Note: pxe setup, boot server ,install media and ks file all are in same server.

I run Slackware-Current and use slackpkg to keep it updated. I also read the ChangeLog in case slackpkg misses something. After reading today's ChangeLog, I ran 'slackpkg update' and 'slackpkg upgrade-all', but the rebuilt bsd-games package isn't showing in the update list. Is anybody else having this problem?
Code:
root@slackware:/home/steven# slackpkg upgrade bsd-games
Checking local integrity... DONE
Looking for bsd-games in package list.
No packages match the pattern for upgrade. Try:
/usr/sbin/slackpkg install|reinstall
I installed the slackpkg 2.81.1 update (overwriting all my config files with the *.new ones), and I'm still having the same problem.

I have a number of versions of gnome installed on a number of different hosts. All users have network mounted home directories. In some cases gnome works poorly when reading configuration from the .gnome2 directory. I would like to read config files from version specific directories. Is there any way to specify this when starting gnome? Environment variables perhaps? I know how to move the .gconf directories but this is not sufficient. I need to read the .gnome2 from a different path.

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.
So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.
So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...
So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!
If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

I tried to compile a 2.6.33 kernel following Alien's guide.
I pretty much used the default values for every (NEW) option avaiable. I used "make localmodconfig" on my current config (zcat /proc/config.gz) and then tried to use "make menuconfig" to check if I could change anything. I didn't understand most of the options, so I skipped it. Then I used "make bzImage modules" and "make modules_install", copied the files mentioned on the wiki and run lilo.
But when I try to boot using my custom kernel, it gives an error like "Cannot remount read-only filesystem as read-write! This can cause serious problems."
If I try to continue the boot, it hangs when trying to launch the syslog script...
The new kernel entry on lilo.conf is:
Code:
image = /boot/vmlinuz-custom-2.6.33
root = /dev/sda4
label = newkernel
read-only
just like the default kernel entry.
By the way, one thing I changed is the kernel compression format, which I set LZMA. But it didn't seem to be the problem, since it at least started...

I am a beginner in ubuntu and only recently did i install Ubuntu 10.10 using Wubi. I am dual booting along with Windows 7 64bit. Before I got to know of Wubi, I created a free 20GB partition for installing linux. But since it was of no use, I decided to extend another partition adding this 20GB space. The problem now is that I am getting the following error while trying to access the partition.

I am unable to rip from CD to .mp3 using pretty much any tool. Dolphin / Konqueror auidiocd:// KIO slave shows the mp3 folder, but when you move the tracks you get: Could not read some_song.mp3: encoding failed WARNING: libsndfile may ignore -r and perform fseek's on the input. Compile without libsndfile if this is a problem. I'm running 11.3 (KDE 4.4.4) with K3B 2 from Packman (with the k3b 2 codec package) and K3B fails as does the KIO slave method above. Lame version is: lame-3.98.4-2.pm.4.1.x86_64 Restricted multimedia formats packages are installed from Restricted formats/11.3 - openSUSE Community Wiki Alsa works great otherwise, I have no sound issue, etc. - just can't rip anything to mp3 Seems like I'm not the only one who has had this problem, there are a few posts here on the Suse Forum, and others elsewhere, but the resolution seems to be nebulous at best. Sometimes lame 3.98 from packman works for some guys, other times not, etc. Unable to rip an audio cd into mp3's using 11.2 - opensuse.opensuse.org - ArchiveOrange
