Unfortunately, it makes the globalmenu and clock applets disappear on my gnome-panel. My panel is set to system theme, though when I choose a solid color I can get the hidden text to show up. I want to preserve the system color so I need to change the text color somehow. Also, I don't know why it uses that bluish color when clicked on since I never defined such a color in the appearance settings.
Ubuntu :: Cut Random Text And When The Cursor Focus Jumps Back To The Location Of The Cursor On The Screen
Jul 1, 2010Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Apr 2, 2011I put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

Jun 11, 2010just upgraded to Lucid. When booting, I get a blinking cursor on a black screen for 30 sec. Then I get some flashes of text about UDEV. Finally, I get a desktop after about 30 more sec.
Any way to speed this up? I've already tried disabling my nonexistent floppy drive in the bios, but it didn't help.

Aug 11, 2010OS is CentOS 5.5, and GNOME terminal emulator (v2.16.0). However I regard the question is not related with OS/Gnome version level. My question is whether if color setting is available or not for the text character outputted by kernel (or shell, i.e. Bash). Normally we can specify/modify text character color (and background color) with property setting on the terminal. However, it only takes affect to the text for inputting character, not for outputted character by kernel/shell. For example, when we type a shell command "ls -al <cr>", the text appears with the color along with the terminal property.
Meanwhile, the text message displayed on the console (output message against "ls -al" command), in this case it must be file and/or directory names, will appear with some preset color which we've not preliminarily set. In my case, I set Text color with "White", Background color with "Black". Then I expect the text output message color displayed by kernel/shell would be some brighter color. But the color is "blue" which does not look better brightness against "Black" background. For this situation what I'd like to know is how to set/specify the color outputted by the kernel/shell (or whether or not it is possible to set manually).

Sep 7, 2010I am running Debian Lenny with Gnome and Metacity, and I've just installed the fglrx driver for my ATI card. I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

Logging out and in doesn't work. Over the weeks I've played around with this machine a bit, installing and uninstalling various DEs such as Kubuntu and LXDE; I have a feeling something messed up my cursor config while I was changing stuff, but I don't know what or where. Apr 3, 2010I use an ancient text editor - Jove - that I maintain and update myself. It has worked fine on Fedora 6, 7 and 8 under gnome-terminal (known to the Jove editor as xterm). I just installed Fedora 12. When moving around a file being edited, the cursor often 'replicates' itself into a series of blocks (or underlines, depending on the cursor type setting) that seem to correspond to tab-stops. I initially thought it was stumbling on TABs, but it does this weirdness on long strings of blanks, as well. Clearing and redrawing the screen cleans things up until the next movement command.
I _intensively_ checked the code for anything that might be sensitive to the new termcap strings that have come with F12, but nothing. I could live with this if the underline cursor blinked so that I could SEE it in text, but alas, there ain't a blinking cursor. Just found out how to get the cursor blinking on another thread. But, I'd _still_ like go get the 'block' to work right. I compared the termcaps used by Jove in LF8 and LF9 and they were identical. Since the "7-block-wide" cursor bug happens in LF9, 10, 11, and 12 but not in LF8, I can confidently conclude that support for termcap/terminfo has been broken as of Fedora 9. And people ask me why I have four computers. (So I can run F8 F9 and F12 and compare their performance!).

May 5, 2011I'm using Fedora 14 x86 64-bit, Gnome DE, on a Phenom 9750 computer, with a Radeon XT1900 video card and 8GB RAM. Recently, my cursor (normally a black arrow) suddenly changes into a vertical line of small white dots, about an inch long. It's essentially unusable, unless it happens to roll over a hyperlink, since it's invisible on a white background. Logging off and on has no effect. Rebooting sometimes "fixes" it, sometimes not. It has yet to correct without a reboot.Except for regular updates as noticed, the only change in the system in the past month or so was to add nano as a text editor.

Feb 17, 2015I am running Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.2 on a Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. My resolution is currently set to 2880:1800 and any time I try to lower it, the whole screen goes to black (even if I change it to something in the 16:10 ratio) and I just have to keep force restarting when doing that. I want to lower it because a lot of stuff is really small. Certain aspects of windows in programs are so small, and in order to properly view stuff on my web browser I have to increase the magnification to around 250% for it to be reasonable.
Some things seem normally sized in the windows, and thus make things awkward on the screen, especially in chrome. Is there a way to fix this without having to change my resolution and/or font sizes? Making font sizes bigger on the gnome tweak tool makes things look a bit more awkward because it squeezes the text into small spaces. I would rather keep a higher resolution for a better picture, and changing it seems to mess things up. Here is what my browser looks like (without magnifying). Notice how the font size in the bookmark bar is disproportionately large compared to the buttons in the top right to close/max/min the window.
And this problem isn't just in the browser, but for example, in matlab everything is extremely tiny. I want to make everything larger, not just the text...
Debian Multimedia :: Changing Default Text Editor In Xfce
May 28, 2015I would like to set the default text editor in Xfce to gedit. The only solution that I found on Google was to right click on a given text file, select 'open with other application', sleect gedit, and make sure that the "use as default kind" button is checked. Unfortunately this only works for text files with the same extension as the original file. Is there a way of setting every text file to open with gedit by default that doesn't involve repeating this exercise for every possible text file extension (.c, .py, .h, .hs, etc.)?
