Software :: Script Calls Another Script Which Calls 'bash' Inside
Mar 15, 2010I need to write a script. In which, the 2nd part commands need to run under another bash shell environment.The enter_antoher_bash_env.sh will setup a new shell environment, call "bash". The rest commands need to run under the new env. (I cannot change this script too. )If I run these command one by one manually, it works of course. If I put them into a script, enter_another_bash_env.sh won't return because it calls "bash" command inside.

Jun 25, 2010I have a startup script for jboss (start.sh) that sets some JAVA_OPTS and then calls bash run.sh.If I run it (start.sh) from the command line it runs in the terminal fine. If I make a shortcut launcher for it in gnome and set it for 'application in terminal' it pops up then immediately dies after launch.Not sure what the problem is. Is this not working because one script is calling a second script? But then why does it work when I call ./start.sh?

The second script ("tweet") updates my twitter account.

What I want to do is be able to update my twitter account with the current defcon status (this is really more of a learning thing than something I actually want to be doing). The original script for tweet replaced $@ with $1, but if I use:
tweet `defcon`
it only uses the first word in the string, similarly if I used $2 or $3.So I changed it to $@. The normal function still works, but typing:
tweet `defcon`
updates twitter with nothing.
EDIT I should mention the /dev/null is there to catch the output of curl, otherwise it won't run silently. It still updates twitter normally with the send to /dev/null

Jan 13, 2010I have 3 old power supplies, each 3+ years old (out of warranty). One just blew out after a power failure, but it was on a beefy 750 kVA ACP uninterruptible power supply / surge surpressor. It just won't boot a 939 motherboard, but I can not find anything wrong with it. I short the 3rd and 4th pins to turn them on and check many of the pins. They are all ~exactly at nominal voltages. It is as though I forgot to plug in the ATX 4 pin, 12 V cable, but I didn't. Strangely enough, they all boot a very old Athlon XP (32 bit) single core processor on an AGP motherboard. I don't have a good setup to load test them. Is there any trick to rescue them? A fuse inside? Hotwire wire 4 to wire 8? I hate to throw them away as they are nice, quiet, high power supplies:
Antec Neo 480 W
Enermax Liberty 620 W
Enermax eg651p 650 W
Perhaps, I could charge my car battery with one? Install 12 V lighting? Electrolosize water and start an Oxygen bar?

Oct 7, 2010I am using sda1 as /, which is a bootable drive. I do not know if my problem is that I did not create a /boot drive. After removing the iso dvd, I tried to reboot and I get this back: -bash: /sbin/reboot: input/output error Then it returns me to the terminal prompt.

However, if the user inputs a directory and finds its size then inputs another directory then wants to quit, the script asks the user numerous times if he wants to quit!! The script won't exit until the number of times the user looks at a directory is reached! What gives?

Which probe to be very useful with other simple notifications like this. But I don't know how to manage the email addresses as they are usually more than one and could vary from 1 to 10. They should appear one above the other. I found this: "Here is a little work around. The only thing the user needs to do is hit enter without anything else on a line and it will close out"

Jun 2, 2009I've been using python/bash to help myself automate things for a long time, however I am curious. One reason I use python more is because I don't quite know how to work with user input in Bash, such as getting it to ask for input and wait, and then placing that user input into a command.
Here's an example of a script I use from time to time for converting OGG video files into AVI.
How could I write this same script in Bash? Keep in mind I am mostly self taught, so I am by no means an expert programmer.

Nov 12, 2009I am not sure if that Subject really explains it, basically I have a script that executes a CLI java-applet that requires a passphrase from the user. I can easily execute this by issuing the -p argument followed by the passphrase however that shows up on possible logs or at least on the results of the ' ps ' command. If you do not supply this -p argument it provides a new line with the echo " Enter Passphrase: " and asks for input.
how can I provide a result/input for the Passphrase request and is it still possible to throw this application in the background with the ' & ' following the command? I have seen a few examples that show a /bin/expect that expects a result and sends a command however I would like to refrain from any extra dependencies. Example of Regular Execution of application:

Aug 9, 2009I have a script im having some problems with, what I need is to have the system generate a random password for me and use that password when creating new users to it.
System is Debian Lenny and script is in bash.
The program is znc. I have made it so that it will generate the random password on the shell but the problem is to use it in the bnc software.
To make a password there the command is znc --makepass and look like this:
My question is now if it would be possible to put in the script so it would "answer" when it need those passwords ? the random password that is generated is in a variable called $setpass and is NOT crypted.
Or is there any other software that would be able to generate that md5 string for me ?

I have a bash script that reads URL addresses of our internal server and then executes some test commands on them. Something like this:

sh execute-what-ever-to $url
After copy-pasting the URL the user taps the enter key and the script proceeds, but here comes the tricky part: I want this to work without the need to press the enter key after copy-pasting the URL.
"read -n" does not work in this case, as the URLs vary greatly in length. However, the URLs always end to the same string. They could be like "http://url1/END", "http://url2/END" and so on. So this ending string "END" could be theoretically used to recognize that the whole URL has been pasted.
