General :: [bash] Output Of One Script Is Input Of Another?
Mar 20, 2010
Now, I have one script called "defcon" defcon gets the current DEFCON level and outputs it using echo.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
DEFCON=`curl -s http://members.tripod.com/~Swat_25/defcon.html | sed -n '/^$/!{s/<[^>]*>//g;p;}' | sed '/^$/d' | grep '[12345]$'`
echo "The current DEFCON level is $DEFCON"
The second script ("tweet") updates my twitter account.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
curl -s -u USER:PASS -d status="$@" http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml > /dev/null
What I want to do is be able to update my twitter account with the current defcon status (this is really more of a learning thing than something I actually want to be doing). The original script for tweet replaced $@ with $1, but if I use:
tweet `defcon`
it only uses the first word in the string, similarly if I used $2 or $3.So I changed it to $@. The normal function still works, but typing:
tweet `defcon`
updates twitter with nothing.
EDIT I should mention the /dev/null is there to catch the output of curl, otherwise it won't run silently. It still updates twitter normally with the send to /dev/null

I am using sda1 as /, which is a bootable drive. I do not know if my problem is that I did not create a /boot drive. After removing the iso dvd, I tried to reboot and I get this back: -bash: /sbin/reboot: input/output error Then it returns me to the terminal prompt.

I am not sure if that Subject really explains it, basically I have a script that executes a CLI java-applet that requires a passphrase from the user. I can easily execute this by issuing the -p argument followed by the passphrase however that shows up on possible logs or at least on the results of the ' ps ' command. If you do not supply this -p argument it provides a new line with the echo " Enter Passphrase: " and asks for input.
how can I provide a result/input for the Passphrase request and is it still possible to throw this application in the background with the ' & ' following the command? I have seen a few examples that show a /bin/expect that expects a result and sends a command however I would like to refrain from any extra dependencies. Example of Regular Execution of application:
Code:
$ /usr/local/***/**** -u USERNAME -r Default-Realm -f certificate.der
Password:

I am having a strange problem I've never encountered before. I have an Asus Eee S101 10.1" netbook with the 32GB SSD. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition.
The other day, I was browsing with Firefox, when suddenly the entire computer came screeching to a halt. Had to power it down with the power button. After this happened, I have been unable to use the same Firefox profile I had been using. I had to start Firefox from the command line with the -ProfileManager switch, then create a new profile to keep browsing.
I wanted to completely get rid of the old profile, so from the Profile Manager I tried to delete the old one. Computer hung, had to reboot with the power switch. I then tried to browse to the .mozilla/firefox directory and delete the profile's directory there, from both Nautilus and the command line. Both times, the computer froze.
I tried a few more times, and the couple of times the computer didn't freeze, I got an error from the command line saying a Bash input/output error. After this error appeared, it would appear no matter what command I ran - I couldn't even run a sudo reboot now.
I can create/delete other files and directories, just not that Firefox profile.

I'm trying trying to understand dd, and I'd like to know why frequently do we have to use a block read/write size, like "dd bs=1024", "dd ibs=512"... If it executes the operation byte by byte, isn't it irrelevant? What is this block size then?

I have a WD external disk, NTFS file system. I mounted it on my Red Hat. While on the external disk, I deleted a directory, which was sent to .Trash-root of that disk.I went to .Trash-root and did rm -rf to completely delete that directory, but I got the following error: cannot remove `<directory>': Input/output errorWhen I do ls -la on that directory that I wish to remove, it shows me it has 0 files inside. But not only I can't remove it, I can't do anything else with it (copy, etc). And I have all the rights on that directory, so this isn't the problem.

Pavillion laptop crashed and I can not find all of my recovery discs. The computer will not allow me to do an internal recovery so I ordered a recovery download on line and burned to a disc. when I put the disc in the graphics came up and in started in Live-mode but then the error mess came: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libpci.so.3: cannot read file data: input/output error. The site said it was an ISO file but then it had a program it had me run to change it and burn the disc.

My input file looks like this:

If I have an interactive program, e.g top, which, after launch, can be fed with key strokes and changes its behavior, for example, after launching top and then pressing "1", you can see the CPU utilization per core. I was wondering if there is a programmatical way to do so, so I don't have to press "1" every time. I would think it is an easy task, but so far my attempts have failed.

I would like to compare the (screen) output of one bash script with the (screen) output of another bash script to ensure the output is exactly the same.The reason for this is that I am receiving a consolidated data feed from an IP address and have moved some of the data feed to a 'new' source IP address. I will turn off the feed from the original once satisfied that the new is receiving the same data. The format of the output from the scripts are exactly the same.
Tried so far
./IDCGRE.sh | grep FX.CK | diff < ./IDCGRE2.sh
./IDCGRE.sh | grep FX.CK | ./IDCGRE2.sh | diff

I'm having trouble with a bash script. I have something like this:export VAR=`command`The problem is that "command" can return this: "** NONE **". bash will then replace each of the * by the list of files in the current directory.I want the output to be uninterpreted (i.e. VAR should contain "** NONE **", not "list of files list of files NONE list of files list of files"). It shouldn't be hard but I am unable to figure it out, and I'm not sure how to phrase the problem,

I know how to redirect the output of a terminal to a file. For example, if I want to list all the files in ~/Documents and output to a file called test.txt, I would do this: ls ~/Documents > test.txt The question is, can I copy the output to test.txt AFTER I have carried out the command? This would mean that I wouldn't have to know in advance whether I want to copy the output to file. I want to do something like this: ls ~/Documents Then this: <bash command for copying standard output to test.txt>

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

I'm not really sure this is the right category for this post...
I've been thinking and reading but I really don't find a solution, and this is why I decided to post here. I'm not a newbie using Linux but I know absolutely nothing about nfs and related stuff. If explanations are not clear/precise I'm sorry and absolutely open to explain myself better (I'm really desperate, at this point).
I'm running a Debian in a VirtualBox inside a RHEL5. To supply space to the virtual machine I'm trying to mount a disk (? maybe not?) that I created in the RHEL.
In RHEL: I created a directory /some/path/dir and I granted access to it from the VM (edit /etc/exports file and restart the nfs service)
In Debian: I created a directory to be used as mounting point (mkdir /other/nice/path/dir) and I tried to mount (mount -t nfs -v redhat:/some/path/dir /other/nice/path/dir). What happens next is the following:
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu ...
mount.nfs: text-based options ...
mount.nfs: mount(2): Input/output error
mount.nfs: mount system call failed
Now, this Input/output error is too vague to trace where the problem is, but I really have no idea about how to go more in depth (are there logs somewhere? What should I look for? ... ...).
