General :: Bash 'can't Find' Binary Executables

I am working on a custom hand-held device which runs a variant of Ubuntu Linux, 2.6.18. I have a set of 4 binary files (for oprofile) which have been known to run in this environment, but when I copy them to /usr/bin, I can't run them: I get this message;root@ldogberry:/usr/bin# ./ophelp-sh: ./ophelp: not foundThis happens when I specify the full path, when I run from the /usr/bin directory -- it happens no matter what. Bash even does command-line completion on the file -- and then turns around and instantly claims the file is not found.

How do I find paths on ubuntu. I have installed redcar(ide written in ruby similar to textmate) and rvm for ruby. However I cannot locate where the executables are to update my .bashrc.

I just installed amanda-backup_client-2.6.0p2-1.rhel4.i386.rpm on my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 system. But I don't know who to check if it successfully installed or not. When I try to run amrecover from root, I get:

I have a 'bin' directory in my home that contains executables. For example: scandirs.sh.It's in my PATH, so I can just type 'scan{tab}{tab} to run it. But 'which scandirs.sh' returns nothing.

I just installed the xubuntu-desktop package on my netbook (running UNR), and I've got one major complaint about xfce.
I can't right-click on icons in the Applications menu and add them to the launcher!Instead I have to know the location of the executable for the application, so that I can right-click the panel, add a launcher, and then type the location of the executable in and manually select an icon for it...Of course it probably wouldn't be a pain if I could find everything. In Windows, if I want to know the location of a program that's running, I just open Task Manager, right-click the application, and select Properties.
Is there some equivalent or command-line way of finding the location of a running application in Linux?
A few I'd like to know the location of are:
1) Gnome System Monitor
2) Terminal
3) Swiftfox
... and I'll probably think of others.
Even though I'm using XFCE, I figured this fell under the "all variants" category since my main question is just how to find the locations of executables...

I know there's a which command, that echoes the full name of a binary (e.g. which sh). However, I'm fairly sure there's a command that echoes the package that provides a particular binary. Is there such a command? If so, what is it? I'd like to be able to run this:
commandName ls and get coreutils for example.

I need a command to search a string in a file and then to convert the next string in the same line from hexadecimal to binary. I was able to put everything in capitals. The original file can be as such:
E 2
C 1 794
T ffff
E 2
C 1 787
It is not always FFFF! I am trying to do this in a file at once, not reading line by line (using while).

I am currently writing some convenience methods for my terminal in my bash_profile and am sure if what I am writing is "the best way". I figure a good way to verify whether what I'm doing is right or not would be to find some source code of more established programs and see how they do it.My question then is, where can I find this code on my Mac? An example is, with Macports installed, where is the source code that opens the port interactive console when I type nothing but "port" in my shell?(I added Linux in the title even though I am on a Mac because I assume the answer would be the same for both)

I'm trying to write a bash script to find all lines containing two different strings in many files. I don't have access to egrep so I want to use sed for this purpose.
The files will look like this:
FileX
------
Info:18
Data:76
Contact:me@home.com
Start:1500
I want to generate a new file from these files with only the rows containing Data and Start. Something like this:

do sed '/Data|Start/p' $y > newfile
done

What kind of method to find the duplicates files on linux,
1.how to find just using the file name, sometimes i figure out people often to copy their files to another directory and i want to find out if there any same file name in the linux box.
2. what about if i want to find the duplicate files based on contents of the file, example is in picture file if users store picture files from digital camera first they just save the file name in default but when they want to give that picture to others they will rename it, i've been used method md5 for this situation in python script but it takes long time
I'm asking this question just to know to use bash script a lot in work and i want to test out fdupes at home, is fdupes use similar md5 scan to find duplicate files?

I'm trying to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.10 via 8.10 etc. When I run update manager, I get this:
W:Failed to fetch [URL] Unable to find expected entry universal/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?), E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
and then it closes. I've unselected all the third party packages and tried various servers, but no difference. I can wget the file, but when I look at it I see entries for "universe/binary-i386/Release", but nothing for "universal" .

I tried to tag late onto a question similar to mine on stackoverflow (Find Non-UTF8 Filenames on Linux File System) to elicit further replies, with no luck so far, so here goes again... I have the same problem as the OP in the link above and convmv is a great tool to fix one's own filesystem. My question is therefore academic, but I find it unsatisfactory (in fact I can't believe) that 'find' is not able to find non standard ascii characters.
Is there anyone out there that would know what combination of options to use to find filenames that contain non standard characters on what seems to be a unicode FS, in my case the characters seem to be 8bits extended ascii rather than unicode, the files come from a Windows machine (iso-8859-1) and I regularly need to fetch them. I'd love to see how find and/or grep can do the same as convmv.

I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Is it possible to convert/recompile an already compiled x86 binary into an ARM binary?I'm using a BeagleBoard with a command-line Ubuntu (Maverick) and want to run a Ventrilo server but the x86 executable they supply cannot be run on the hardware as far as I can tell (most likely due to differing architecture).Unfortunately I don't have access to the source to allow me to recompile it natively.
