I ran mv -n /desktop /user/local/bin and as a result everything on my desktop is gone. I tried the opposite mv -n /user/local/bin /desktop in the hopes of undoing it but now only one of those directories will exist at one time. What should I do? How badly did I screw things up?

I was recently uninstalling mysql5 from /opt/local/bin.I typed:rm -rf /opt/local/bin mysql*instead ofrm -rf /opt/local/bin/mysql*This deleted my entire /opt/local/bin directory which puts me in a bit of a bind.Is there any way to recover those files? If not, I have a friend that is using a similar set of programs, would it be possible to use the contents of his folderIf I end up needing to reinstall everything in this folder, what is the best way to go about doing this?

Did a basic mistake . Dnt know how to recover .In root user i gave a commandmv / /home/username/except the home directory all the other folders that is /sbin /lib /optetc was moved to /home/username.Now i am unable to execute any command.I also tried to set the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the newly copied localtion but none of the command works. Since "mv" command also not working i am unable to change the location.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had bad experience with disk checking in windows. Boot checker just moved all more and more of my files to a hidden folder without me knowing. I lost a lot of photos due to this. Afterwards when I checked that folder I found that most of the files were intact and I was able to open them without a problem. How dumb is that a program moves files without your permition to do so So I'm wondering what happens with files on Ubuntu if they get corrupted or are suspected as corrupted? And how can I know if the automatic checking procedure that runs when booting found any corrupted files, bad sectors etc... ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.
Our office moved yesterday. I shut down the computer cleanly and physically moved it to the new location. On startup, the wallpaper shows on both monitors, and the login screen. But, when I log in, I get failed to load session "gnome"
I am using Fedora Core 15. The only hardware that changed is I swapped out my cordless usb mouse for a corded one because I left the dongle at home. How I can I troubleshoot the problem and get my computer up and running again?
After removing GDM, XFCE4, and the crap-load of dependencies that came with it, something must have gone wrong. I can not place items nor delete items any more. How do I fix this problem of mine? I'm using KDE at the moment.

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same).With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above.But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu,which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder.Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

The problem is that I think that my password is still required, but now I can't use my laptop. View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running OpenSuse 11.3 X64. I have installed apache2, PHP5 and MySQL in order to do some web-design offline e.g. they are for internal network use only. There is also phpMyAdmin installed. The default directory for the "server" is /srv/www/htdocs.
To access a specific site in progress I create a subfolder there then just navigate via h**p://10.13.23.201/NAMEOFFOLDER from my internal network. At least that is how it should work but it doesn't. I created a new folder called wlc so it's directory is /srv/www/htdocs/wlc however when I go to the address h**p://10.13.23.201/wlc I get a Remote Server Or File Not Found error from my browser, there is files in there ,index.php, that should load and apache has been set to recognize *.php files.
I know the theory should work as I can access /srv/www/htdocs/phpMyAdmin by going to h**p://10.13.23.201/phpMyAdmin and it loads just fine. Also the error is different if I go to a folder that doesn't exist for example h**p://10.13.23.201/THISFOLERDOESNTEXISIT will return an Object Not Found error.
