Jun 6, 2011
Adobe's official reader don't support do-annotation under Linux. Evince can't do.Reading PDF is the last thing on which I can not totally move to a pure Linux environment.

I notice that on DistroWatch, the descriptions include "debian based", "arch based", etc. For the newbie, is there any practical difference between the different bases, or is it a Coke vs Pepsi type question?
Is a distro based on Debian say, easier for a newbie to learn or work with than say one that is FreeBSD based?

My workstation has a Nvidia Quadra FX550 graphics card which affects compiz in a very bad way; movies is often just black screened, Blender runs extremely slow etc. Switching to Metacity makes the computer much more robust without any glitches.
I would gladly move to Metacity if not for a big BUT; the annotation tool in Compiz which I use all the time. Not having that makes me a handicapped animator.
So, is there some sceen annotate tool that works in Metacity?

However, while okular seems (after lengthy evaluation) my preferred pdf viewer for READING. I still have yet to find a good application option for reading AND annotation and highlights.Where and how do I get to the okular annotation tools? Can't find them.Also, on a different, but somewhat related topic okular has been reviewed as problematic because its highlights and annotations can only be viewed in that application (this may not be a prob because cross-platform but that still seems risky to put highlights on doc only viewable in one app.looking for fixes/alternatives to that).

I am trying to use link scope IPv6 addresses to permit two machines to connect using IPv6, but I cannot figure out how to do it without specifying the interface to use on every connection. Here is an example ping:
[root@ppatel-brn1 ~]# ping6 -c 3 fe80::204:75ff:feb6:2994
connect: Invalid argument
[root@ppatel-brn1 ~]# ping6 -c 3 -I eth0 fe80::204:75ff:feb6:2994
PING fe80::204:75ff:feb6:2994(fe80::204:75ff:feb6:2994) from fe80::214:22ff:febd:7c1f eth0: 56 data bytes

So I have a partition I wanna make smaller. I can use GParted but this is not secure. Even with backup - there are tons of personal files, I can't check 'em all if they are correct after resizing. So I thought maybe I can create a dir on another machine and do something like
Code:
cp -a / /mnt/0 # which is a mounted directory on another machine
and after repartitioning HDD get everithing back this way. Will it work?

I wish to know that which gcc release version had support on ARM 9 multicore system by using pthread library for its parallelizing method on ecos rtos.I assume that the compiler that support the single ARM 9 processor will surely compile its multicore version also.But i need a clarification about it.It is good if you give a article or provide a suitable link on the ARM multicore programming and its compilation method

I have set of DVD disks. I'd like to rip them to .mkv files, but with all information - i.e. all subtitles, and all audio tracks. Is there any tool on Linux that I could use to do it? I found some Gentoo howto about ripping, but it requires writing shell scripts, and I'd rather use something with clickable interface.

When a Linux machine with NTP capabilities will start and it does not find the NTP server, how it will determine the time? A clue I have is that it uses some heuristic method but I don't need what does that mean. My main question is: How can I track such an event on a monitoring purpose?

While I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.

defining keyboard layouts in linux (ubuntu 10.04 here). there does not seem to be any easy, graphical way to define keyboard mappings (except for keyboardlayouteditor, but frankly, i do not understand the installation description.i am using an apple aluminum keyboard with a german layout, but no matter what i do the (<>) and (^°) keys are always swapped (i did manage to change the default behavior for the f1...f12 keys from multimedia back to 'ordinary', application-centric... all you have to do is add the line echo 2 > /sys/module/hid_apple/parameters/fnmode to /etc/rc.local... this is so bloody obvious i am ashamed i had to search the web for this!).
adding to my distress, i find the chinese IMEs a horror (not a single one of the many i tried does anywhere come near google pinyin for windows), and have gotten neither ibus nor scime to work in a satisfactory way for me. i find linux keyboard handling a morass. i know this must be one of the hardest problems in computer science, since this subject gets so convoluted no matter whether its on windows or in-the-browser javascript. as a linguist i am well aware of the inherent complications proper text handling poses, but looking at descriptions how to configure xkb makes building interstellar spaceships look like a cakewalk.
find a place in the system where keystrokes are recorded;read out those codes (could be scan codes or character codes) using a daemon (implemented in python; i heard you have to listen to IOCTL or somesuch); when certain code combinations appear, switch them to do what you want;applications now get to see a X where formerly the got to see a U and vice versa;profit!
Is there a place, in ubuntu / linux systems that does allow reading out keyboard codes? Is there a way to block processing of such keyboard actions until an intercepting daemon has processed them? Would such an interceptor work for a broad range of use cases? like on the command line, in a gtk app, in wine, in firefox and so on? An alternative would actually be to grok keyboardlayouteditor, so if someone could post about a readable, complete installation instruction or point out installable packages, that'd be great, too.

Every time kubuntu updates its headers/boot image I get another version on disk in /boot. These also show up in menu choices when I boot. I currently have 7 or 8 versions and would like to get down to three or four.
In the past I just deleted the files of related versions from /boot but is this the preferred method? Is there a better/safer way to get rid of old kernels?

I just received my Slackware 13.1 & the 'Official Guide to Slackware Linux' book. I know that there is a big learning curve to use Slackware and that is why I purchased it - according to Distrowatch, "...if you learn Slackware, you learn Linux!" But, while I am 'learning Linux', I would still like to have a linux distro installed that would be more of a 'no-brainer'.
So the question is, which distro should I install first, Slackware or say, OpenSuse? I know that if I were going to dual-boot with XP, that XP should be installed first - does order matter for 2 linux distros too? Also, are there any points to remember to do during the installation processes so that I end up with a working, dual-boot computer?

I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer.If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login.The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.
