General :: 2.3.68 - Make Command Will Count Then Freeze ?
May 24, 2011
I'm trying to make and make install a driver for my wireless, every time, though, I use the make command, it'll start at 0 and cound almost up to 200,000 and then the computer freezes. I've tried different drivers, same result. I've tried ndiswrapper but that didn't work either.

I am a newbie in Linux. Here is my question....
Create the file ~/license_counts, which tables the number of occurrences of packages which are licensed under a given license, for the top 5 most commonly used licenses, sorted in numerically descending order. If performed correctly, your file should be formatted similarly to the following. (Do not be concerned if the actual counts or license names are different. Also, you might notice logically similar licenses, such as LGPL/GPL and GPL/LGPL. Do not make any attempt to combine them into a single entry.)
The resulted format:
I tried some method but cannot get it to work.

This has to also show the line count. I can get it to show the files but not the line count. What is the single command used to identify only the matching count of all lines within files under the /etc directory that contain the word „HOST? List only the files with matches and suppress any error messages.

I want to count the digits in between the text in a file.
e.g.
write down the form
2.3 3.3 3.0 505.0 0.777E-07
22.3 3.3 5.0 503.0 1.777E-04
Then read this.
How can i do the counting of these digits present in between a text in a file?

I need to organise an external HDD such that there is no more than 500 folders on it.
Ubuntu's "Properties" pane shows only the file count, not the folder count.
Is there a simple CLI line that will tell me the number of subdirectories?

Write a script that will take a list of filenames as arguments and output a count of how many of them are regular files, and how many of them are scripts (if the file is executable, it will be assumed to be a script file)
Counts always come back as 0

I am trying to do a find/grep/wc command to find matching files, print the filename and then the word count of a specific pattern per file. Here is my best (non-working) attempt so far:
wc `find . ( -name "*.as" -o -name "*.mxml" ) -exec grep -H HeightResizableList {}` ;

Is there a command to count inodes with in a directory?
I know I can see total inode usage with:
df -i
And I know I can find total number of files with:
find ./ |wc -l
But how can I find inodes? As files over 8kb (if using the default partitioning of 1 node over 2 4kb blocks) would take up more than 1 inode.

I have an HP Pavilion zv5000 laptop, it has a pentium 4. I believe the problem might have something to do with the pentium 4. I've searched the forums and noticed others have the same problem as me and they have similar P4 laptops freezing. I've tried the fixes mentioned in those threads but they don't work for me and a handful of other P4 users.
The Problem: When surfing the net or just doing normal everyday things like writing a letter in open office the laptop will totally freeze. It doesn't matter if I overload the laptop by surfing with multiple tabs, playing a video on ....., and listening to music or if I just have one program running. The laptop will totally freeze at a random time and you can't do anything. It's a complete freeze that forces me to reboot by holding the power button.
Solutions: I've seen some solutions posted but they never work for me. The most common one is switch from Firefox to Chromium. I actually have both browsers and they freeze. Firefox tends to make the laptop freeze faster than chromium. But it still freezes randomly after a while.
Another solution I tried from reading a different thread is getting rid of Icedtea java and going back to sun java. This didn't do anything to help the freezing.
Before upgrading to 10.10 and 11.04 I was on 9.10 and it worked flawlessly on my laptop. Something happened in 10.10 that caused this, maybe something was modified or dropped is my guess. I upgraded to 11.04 hoping that it would fix the problem but it hasn't.

I can't seem to find a multimedia player that works well for me. With VLC, the screen with freeze up and then update itself later to the correct time but it changes to lots of strange colors. With Mplayer, the video will freeze and then catch up later, like VLC does. With Totem, I can't seem to get the subtitles to work correctly. It replaces the subtitles with a font of it's own. I always used Media Player Classic on Windows and it worked really well. When I say "freeze up and catch up later" I mean that the video and subtitles will freeze, but the sound will keep going. The video and subtitles correct themselves a few seconds later.
1. Is there a way to make it so VLC doesn't freeze up and catch up later with strange colors?
2. A way to make VLC and Mplayer not freeze and catch up later?
3. Get Totem to display the correct subtitle font?

So my home computer is connected to work server via openvpn almost 24/7. Some days ago i faced strange problem - when i make ssh session from home to work, via openvpn connection, i can login to work server, but after any command on remote console i have blank screen and nothing happening on it. Only exit is pressing Enter ~ . In server's auth log are messages about session opening and closing only. When i ssh to server from local network at workplace - via putty or native ssh - it works without any problems. I can do anything. But from home I can only login.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and while trying to install the Wacom driver and kernel I get to the step after ./config and get this message when I use make.
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
I've tried looking up on it and they all say that build-essentials should be installed first. So I looked into it and I found out that it's already installed along with the make command itself.
Anyway to get Ubuntu to recognize it as installed?

Based on previous forum discussions, I tried to install cygwin with 'make' installed from develop during installation. I can even see 'make.exe' in bin folder, but still while running the make command, it still shows error.
I was confused in one other part. Should I put the bin folder in some specific location or just wherever it is placed during cygwin installation? I was running VIC model, do I need to place the bin folder inside VIC source code folder.

I can type "save nm" where "nm" is any short name for the directory, like "blog" or "blg" Then whenever I want to go to nm I'll just use 'cd nm'
But it is not working out for me, I get this error every time I enter save:

So How can I make this command work?

Consider that I am building my application in Linux shell using make command but somehow the build fails. Is there any way I can find out that the build has failed (of course looking at shell for error messages will do the job for me but I don't want that). Is there any flag make or shell will set/reset if such failure occurs ?

I'm using a program called easystroke to invoke commands from mouse gestures - typically to launch an application. 'gnome-terminal', for example. If I already have a gnome-terminal window open, and I invoke the gnome-terminal gesture, I'd like to be setting focus to the already running instance, rather than spawn a new instance, which is of course what happens now. (I am actually more interested in this for my gmail chrome app shortcut, and other larger apps.)
I'm very new to ubuntu and linux in general, but I was hoping there might be a nifty command I could wrap around my launch command that would produce this behavior. (I'm imagining some kind of singleton app list keeper program that consumes my command line, checks if it's already in the list, transfers focus to the running process if it is (and if that process is still running), or else spawns a new process and then adds it to its list using the the command line as a key.)
