Fedora :: Use Mail Without SSL As May Occasionally Use Unencrypted WiFi?

Jul 12, 2011

I upgraded to FC15 in early june, come June 15 Thunderbird suddenly ceases to send or receive any email. It pops up with the message "You may have exceeded you maximum connections" and I've tried changing the cache connection count to 1 instead of the default 5 and every OTHER post about that error suggests to no avail. Funny thing, my primary desktop is still on FC13, same thunderbird version, arch and account setup (with SSL enabled) and works flawlessly. Even with -safe-mode enabled it doesn't work. My lightning calendar also doesn't sync since then.

I have found that if I turn SSL off IMAP works again, SSL SMTP still fails. If I turn SMTP SSL off it sends mail. The calendar is an https (SSL) link. Obviously the issue is SSL and Thunderbird in FC15. There are no errors/messages in the console, maillog or the in-built error console. I will NOT use mail without SSL as I may occasionally use unencrypted WiFi.

Fedora :: 14 ,Vfat Occasionally Mounts As Read Only?

Feb 8, 2011

I am running Fedora 14 with kernel 2.6.35.74 x86_64 and I am having an issue with a Vfat partition that is shared with Windows 7 on a dual boot setup. this partition contains my mozilla profiles and it occasionally mounts as read only in Fedora. I wont be able to write to it and root doesnt seem to be able to write to it when this happens. I checked this by trying to redirect an output of ifconfig. My fstab entry looks like this.

Code:
UUID=5830-75A8 /home/joe/share_storage vfat rw,umask=0000,uid=500,gid=joe 0 0
and ls -l

Code:
drwxrwxrwx. 8 joe joe 4096 Dec 31 1969

These two (fstab and ls -l) always look the same whether the partition behaves as read only or not.

Fedora Security :: Security Risk Of An Unencrypted /boot Partition?

Apr 8, 2009

During a recent install I made the leap to encryption, but /boot must remain unencrypted. Is there really any legitimate security risk to having an unencrypted /boot partition? I mean basically someone can just see what kernel you're running which they could see during boot anyways right? Oh I and keep all my financial documents in /boot/finances/ (haha ok not really, but I am serious about the first part).

Debian :: From LVM/XFS/encrypted To Ext4/unencrypted?

Sep 5, 2010

The system disk on my lenny 64b system is using LVM, encryptions and XFS (/boot is ext2). I'm looking forward to turning it into old-style, ext4 unencrypted partitions (and thinking about btrfs in the future. Despite having used Debian for many years now, I haven't really ever tried a true migration and all of the guides out there are concerned with turning an unecrypted to encrypted. My basic idea was to use the installer and set up a minimal new system on a fresh disk, then migrate all of my stuff from the old system.

I have some doubts though

1- is this the easiest way to get the task done?

2- what do I have to copy from the current system /etc? and most importantly, what I should *not* copy?

3- how do I replicate the current package configuration on the new system without falling into a dependency hell?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Unencrypted Wireless Networks

Mar 23, 2010

I have a machine running Xubuntu [2.6.22-14-generic]. I have been trying to get this machine connected to wireless for ages, and I'm having another stab at it. So far I have install ndiswrapper and loaded the driver for a Linksys wireless adapter. The output of 'ndiswrapper -l' reports:

Code:

wusb11v4 : driver installed
devoce (13B1: 000B) present

So as far as my newbie knowledge goes, I believe that step to be completed, correct? When I turn on the machine is type in

Code:

sudo sh
modprobe ndiswrapper

to get the card running to where it will appear in the iwconfig dialog. The commands 'iwlist wlan0 scan' will list all the wireless networks around me, but I have been un-able to connect to any network, even unencrypted ones. I have tried to connect both through Wicd and command-line to no avail. For command-line I have used:

Code:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
sudo dhclient -r wlan0
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

[code]....

With the final 'dhclient wlan0' commands, the following is returned:

Code:

There is already a pid file /var/run/dhclient.pid with pid 134519120
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.5
Copyright 2004-2006 Internet Systems Consortium

[code].....

I have attempted to go ahead a step further and connect to an encrypted wireless network, however, I receive the same message, as well as another error message upon trying to enter the key, with the following code:

Code:

iwconfig wlan0 key s:"thekey"

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To UNencrypted Wireless Networks?

Sep 27, 2010

Here is a situation I have never come across (though I have only been using linux since 2004).I am running ubuntu 10.04 and using Wicd Network Manager.I can connect to my WPA encrypted home network, but if I go to my coffee shop to use their unencrypted wifi - I cannot.Even using the terminal. I think it is the way the device sees the network - but I don't know how to fix it.I have a screenshot with wicd here:And one with connecting to the essid here:Afterwhich, dhclient was unable to obtain an ipaddress - just like wicd above.

My iphone connected to this network easily without encryption or needing to use the browser to authenticate, etc.Any ideas on how to fix this?Specs:Samsung NC10lspci:

Debian Hardware :: Wireless - Connecting To The Same Unencrypted Access Point

Jun 1, 2010

My wireless is 'almost' working, but frustratingly not quite there. Debian Testing (squeeze). I have two different wireless adapters. Both work flawlessly from an ubuntu live CD in the same machine, connecting to the same unencrypted access point so the problem is not faulty hardware, weak signal, overpowering signal, interference from other AP's, MAC filtering, or anything to do with WPA.

I have loaded the correct (I think) firmware packages for both adapters. dmesg is not complaining about missing or incompatible firmware. I have googled the various error messages reported in dmesg and found that the /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat missing config file is normal. I could not find anything that I understood concerning the BSS returned, data->length messages but since I see the same thing in Ubuntu (where the wireless is working flawlessly) I assume they are also normal and not related to the problem.

Both adapters can see all the available access points (using iwlist {iface} scan or using gui tools such as wicd, wifi-radar) NEITHER adapter will associate with any access point (and I've tried three different unencrypted AP's so far). I can connect to all/any of these AP's from an ubuntu live CD using the exact same hardware, so this is NOTHING to do with MAC filtering, etc... using 'iwconfig {iface} essid' as root to set the essid "appears" to work, but simple does not set the ESSID on either wireless adapter.

Using the GUI tools (which are only a front end for the command line tools so I have no idea why everyone thinks a GUI front end like wicd will magically work where the command line tools don't!!) I simply wait a long time for "getting network address" before it eventually fails. LOTS of information in pastebin, please make the effort to read it before asking me for things I have already supplied. And please keep any "RTFM noob" or "go back to ubuntu" replies to yourself. I HAVE read the f*cking documentation and I do not want to go back to ubuntu. I just want to get my wireless working in debian.

Security :: OT - Unencrypted Protocols In The Local Subnet - Switched Network

Aug 27, 2009

I was having a discussion with someone who said that telnet, FTP, HTTP plain-text authentication in the local subnet is ok because it's a switched network. Also, that these protocols are not good over the net but in a local subnet they are just fine.

I know that someone can plug a hub in the network port and connect 2 (or more) PCs and see the packets. Also, heard about ettercap but haven't really delved into it. I know dsniff was written to prove the point that unencrypted protocols are bad. Would like to get opinion about unencrypted protocols over a switched networks.

Ubuntu Security :: Using AutoFS To Mount CIFS Share Without Leaving Unencrypted Passwords

Jul 30, 2011

I followed this howto in order to mount CIFS shares on demand. This works great, however, this guide suggests leaving my network passwords unencrypted on the disk. This is a very bad security practice, as the passwords can be easly retrieved by booting the computer using a different OS.

I was looking for a way to secure things up, so I came up with this solution: Instead of storing the passwords plain text on the disk, I store them in a tar file encrypted using GPG. When I boot my system, I open this file to a directory in /dev/shm, and order AutoFS to retrieve the passwords from there.

This does the trick, but I presume this solution is not that secure, since /dev/shm content can be written to the swap partition. Is there any other solution which is a better security practice? Maybe using some sort of keyring service?

Ubuntu :: Sauerbraten Occasionally Freezing On 10.10?

Feb 24, 2011

I've got the justice edition of sauerbraten, from the tarball on their website (though I didn't have to compile it). Occasionally, when I run it on multiplayer, a map will freeze it. I can't get to a tty unless I first type alt+sysrq+r to release keyboard control from x. Then, I can do ps aux | grep sauer to find it's pid to kill, yet it still gives nothing on x. I then kill all kde things, do sudo service gdm stop and sudo service gdm start, which gets me back to a usable desktop, but weird things will go wrong, like fonts will be the wrong colour. So, to get it back to normal, I have to restart. Is there any way (preferably without actually killing x) of getting my screen back without restarting? I have an integrated intel graphics card, and sauerbraten normally runs at an allright speed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Occasionally Very Slow Web Browsing

Jul 6, 2010

my computer is very slow to view regular web pages, and generally fails to load them. It seems to be a problem specifically with webpages - I can work over SSH, use email, transfer files over FTP connections, with no noticeable problems, but any regular website (including this one) can take an age to load. This happens regardless of the browser I use (at least, it happens on Firefox, Opera, and Chromium), and regardless of wired or wireless connection (though admittedly I've not tried using a wired connection very much). As far as I can tell, it can also happen on any website. It is specific to linux - my computer is dual-boot ubuntu 10.04/Windows XP, and there is no networking problem when I use Windows.

Debian Hardware :: Backlight Occasionally Not Turning On After Suspend?

Oct 20, 2010

I have been running Squeeze for quite a while on my Asus W5F laptop, and recently I have started having intermittent issues with it not starting the backlight after returning from suspend/sleep. Most of the time, the screen comes on as it is supposed to, but once in a while the computer resumes but the backlight is off. It is not just turned down to the lowest brightness setting, it is all the way off. I can read the screen only if I take a flashlight and shine it on the screen and look very closely. Most of the time, it is just easier to go to another machine and use ssh to restart.

I'm not familiar with how the suspend/resume process works, so I don't really know where to look for configuration options. It seems like there are a number of different places, but how they work together, I don't know....

Neither the keyboard brightness adjustment nor echoing values to /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness have any effect, though these do work to change the brightness when the backlight is on.

I took a look in /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux, which shows the following options.
[ "$HAL_PROP_POWER_MANAGEMENT_QUIRK_S3_BIOS" = "true" ] && QUIRKS="$QUIRKS --quirk-s3-bios"
[ "$HAL_PROP_POWER_MANAGEMENT_QUIRK_S3_MODE" = "true" ] && QUIRKS="$QUIRKS --quirk-s3-mode"

[Code]....

The laptop is several years old and has had the lcd display replaced a year or two ago. It is possible that it is a hardware failure, but I lean away from that because a restart always brings the screen up fine, as does closing and opening the lid (which blacks the screen, no suspend).

I dual boot the system with WinXP, and partitions are as follows: sda1 as root, sda2 as home, sda3 as windows xp C: partition, sda4 as swap, sdb1 as windows xp D: partition, sdb2 another swap partition, sdb3 as local1 and sdb4 as local2. If I use fdisk at sdb, sdb1 is marked as bootable, and it warns me that "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary." and "Partition table entries are not in disk order".

Ubuntu Networking :: Upgrading To 10.10 Now Occasionally Crashes Wireless?

Oct 22, 2010

I have an HP 311c netbook which was dual booted XP home and Ubuntu 10.04. Everything worked fine apart from the internal wireless modem (the only reason I needed XP as it worked under Windows) I then upgraded to 10.10 and that started my network problems.

I upgraded Ubuntu using terminal and update-manager, which went ok. The network was identified, but more often than not it now seems to crash the network (and seems to happen sporadically too) - seems to be at some stage whenever the netbook is on now. This then prevents all other PCs/Ipods from accessing the internet. The only way to recover is to reboot my wireless network and the internet modem (and shutdown the netbook).

I got so infuriated with it that I clean installed from a USB key I created, Wireless network runs fine with all other PCs and IP equipment

Network: Linksys 11 B
Internet modem Virgin Media

One strange thing that happened when I upgraded, but seems to have now disappeared, is that I managed to get it to identify and actually use the internal modem, although that 'Mobile Internet' option under Network Manager has now disappeared from the list, so I cannot activate it..
