Fedora :: Ruined Setup And Can't Log Back In?
Feb 2, 2011
I'm on Fedora 14 x86, BTW. So I'm going through the Main Menu program in System > Preferences and deleting entries to things that I know I'll never use and also to get rid of the entries for apps I've uninstalled. I know I could have just unchecked them, but I wanted to tidy it up because I'm really O.C.D. like that.
When I finish, I close the Main Menu program and try to open my home folder and get an error that says something like, "There is no program associated with ///:home/user/...". I try to open another folder and get the same message. So, now I can't open any folders. At this point, I think maybe it's just a fluke and if I restart, everything will return to normal.
It doesn't. Now, when I try to login in, it just gets stuck on the background with the cursor. It isn't frozen, but the desktop never loads. The menu editing is the only change I made to the installation besides uninstalling some programs I don't use (e.g., Totem, Rhythmbox, etc.) I just installed it yesterday. Did I royally er something up? I just thought I was removing menu entries, I didn't think they were actually tied to anything or that it would affect the system in a negative way.

I've FC10 installed. After updating a few days back, I'm unable to use Network Manager to connect to the net through my USB Modem. All the threads I've read say to do
Code: yum update NetworkManager but how can I do it without net connection? Can anyone post the exact link of the Network Manager's latest and BUG-FREE rpm so that I can directly run it?

I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

A few nights ago, I was trying to set up a tv tuner card and I somehow ruined my OS. When I log into Ubuntu, all I get is errors and a blank screen. Since it was an older version, I decided to upgrade to the latest version, 10.10. So I figure that I get a live cd, transfer all my wanted files to an external drive, then install the new OS. I got the live cd and when I boot it, I get some picture at the bottom of my screen with some stick figure and what looks like a piece of film, then my monitor resets and says "Out of range" What can I do to fix this problem? I am currently on a Knoppix 2.6 live cd.

installing my APC Back-UPS ES 350. I am using CentOS 5 KDE setup as a DNS Resolving Caching Name Server, I wanted increase speeds and privacy since I got a letter and didn't like that not one bit, a tv show but whatever. It is very secure now, using peerblock with Iblock List subscribed to for the one year and it is so secure that I have to disable peerblock if I want to use online banking and what not.
setup the APC unit, haven't experienced APC and CentOS is new to me, I didn't want to buy a windows server, so I used BIND instead and well I love CentOS, can't wait to really understand it a lot better, also logging into root is so nice and easy vs Ubuntu, very cool.
I also do not have a DD-WRT supported router nor a Docsis 3 modem, docsis 2, I believe this should give me a lot more speed. currently I just get 11-17Mbps, I am hoping this will bump me back up to 35-37Mbps which I get off and on but unstable.

I've been using Debian for a month or so now and was really happy with it. I wanted to use Chromium browser and followed the instructions on the Debian wiki [URL].... but the install deleted a load of settings, network manager etc. Is there a way I can find a log of what happened? Is there a way to reverse that or shall I just reinstall?

I've tried to type this message twice in detail, but the computer won't submit it. What are the proper steps to take when a SCSI drive fails in a RAID five array running CentOS 5.4?
Yes, I read the manual. On a Dell 6650 system the drive can't be rebuilt because it is not recognized as the correct size. Linux rescue doesn't work... won't find the linux partitions that are still there according to fdisk -l

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 via USB drive. I have 3 disks on my system. Two are 1TB drives and are actual real drives, labeled sda and sdb. sda is where I installed Ubuntu (on its own drive). I also made sure that GRUB was assigned to sda during setup. The 3rd drive isn't really a physical drive, it's a stripped RAID. My BIOS has Intel raid support, and I have 2 500GB drives that form one 1TB drive, and that's the one that Windows 7 is installed on. How do I setup GRUB to allow me to boot back into Windows 7?

I just ruined my /ntfs partition. I used the mkfs command and stopped it by ^C immidiately, but it was too late. mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb1
Is there a way to recover NTFS partition now ? The partition </dev/sdb1> was 'ntfs' and mkfs.ext4 did not check if it was a ext4 or give any pre-check warning, just went ahead with making the ext4 fs on a ntfs partition.

I used the directions from this thread: [url]
Then after installing it, I realized not only did firefoxes fonts look terrible, the fonts on the entire system were totally different, they look terrible.
So I uninstalled all the new programs, removed the new moz repository, and then reinstalled the regular firefox 3.5 from regular ubuntu repos. Dropped all support software down to 3.5 as well. System fonts are still totally fubar!
I tried creating a .fontconfig file with the text from the threads, supposedly to fix the new firefoxes fonts, and it did not help.
As my fonts looked absolutely wonderful, now they look terrible. I tried messing with all the settings in the appearance tab of the gnome menu, nothing seems to help!
Regular firefox is back, and running fine, but its fonts and all the rest of the fonts on the system look horrible, like they are not getting aliased/hinted at all!

I have a Sony Vaio vgn-sz440. Here is what the specs say about the video card.
[code]...
I do not understand, do I have an Intel video card, or an Nvidia video card? Should I install the Nvidia video card driver, because every time I try, everything gets real glitchy and I revert back to my original setup.

I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.
As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?
To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?

My problem is with a fully updated Fedora 13 x86_64 installation. I interrupted "yum provides ..." and corrupted the database. After a good deal of searching and several maneuvers that gradually spoiled /var/lib/yum and /var/lib/rpm I reinstalled yum with rpm and rebuilt its database. But at this point this is so screwed up that I can't use either yum or rpm. For example,
Code:
yum install yum
yields
Code:
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
fedora/metalink | 17 kB 00:00 .....

Running Centos and the desktop was hanging. I did a little (clearly not enough) research and hit ctrl - alt - f7 which brought me to a black screen with a blinking curser in the upper left corner. Got out of that by ctrl - alt - f1 which put me in a terminal session but I really want to get back to the GUI desktop.
Startx gives me "-bash: startx: command not found"
Im logged in as root.

So I just installed OpenSUSE along side Fedora11 and it appears the SUSE grub simply removed Fedora from the menu.lst instead of adding to it... what exactly do I need to put to get it back into the list? My Fedora resides on sdb8 on my partition setup.

I tried changing my Theme via MAC4LIN and it didnt work i get an error messege that shows:
cp: cannot stat `/etc/gdm/gdm.conf': No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
sed: can't read /etc/gdm/gdm.conf: No such file or directory
Previous to this i had tried installing KDM but it didnt appear to do anything (as in change any of the display management settings) The guide that i was reading to install MAC4LIN just uses GDM so i decided not to pursue KDM anymore. I Get the following read out:
[Jason@Echo ~]$ yum info gdm
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
Name : gdm
Arch : i686
[Code].....
The goal is to set all my GDM settings back to normal so i can have that gdm.conf file. Anyone know a way to set the GDM back and repair any damage ive done?

I was trying to free some memory as my /var was about to fill.I went to Add /remove software and ried to remove some of the unwanted software and it asked for dependency and i clicked ok.After a while i saw some of my aplication like Evolution,Empathy blackening and i killed the Uninstallation. I was sure by time that something wrong has happened and i did not switch off my monitor so that i can retain my application.I tried lot to increase teh /var so that i can update my yum and install some lost application but allin vain i tried Gparted which can only decrease the size .
I had 40 GB unallocated space so i tried to boot from Live Fedora 12 DVD and was able to see my all the files and filesystem.
All my data in /home was intact.I tried to go to grub and went to boot hte kernel and Initrd and was able to go to #root but again was not able to update the system as network was missing. The SYSTEM was Not booting and stuck in between.
Tried to change the /var to var1 copied /var content to /var1 and made changes in teh /etc/fstab still did not work ,so finally went to repair with Live cd but could not get "Linux rescue" anywhere not even to upgrade option so finally installed the New linux without touching / and /home partition rest were deleted and formatted for new instalation. Now i could not see my data in /home directory although i could see data in /root(old) and all ..i am now lost ..my data is nowhere ..please help me.I can only see /home(old) but it says empty and shows 6 GB unused and 3.3 GB used when seen in Gparted .
