View 6 RepliesI accidentally deleted /usr/lib , by trying to delete a file from that directory, i didnt notice there was a blank space before the file i wanted to delete , so i had to reinstall fedora 14 again but it's ok because i just installed fedora yesterday. The question is if i can just make a backup of the whole directory /usr/lib , and other important directories and if something goes wrong , can i just copy and paste to their respective directories ? will that restore system stability or will it crash because of time stamps or anything like that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLike the title suggests, I accidentally deleted the 'Accessories' sub-menu from the 'Edit Menu' menu. Is there an easy way to recover the shortcuts from that sub-menu without re-creating everything from scratch? I don't even remember all the apps that were in there.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI created a pendrive USB Fedora OS, worked fine. Installed a few bits and pieces, but when I used it again most of the files have disappeared (corrupt, deleted?). This happened before, just after I put a load of updates on. I am certain it cannot be rescued, but how can I prevent this (apart from backing up)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedA while ago, I removed a .repo file without thinking; it was late, and I was messing with stuff I am using Fedora 15 x64. The repository I removed was fedora-updates-testing.repo
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used the ext3 format when I formatted my partition prior to installing Ubuntu10.10. I had accidentally deleted a file and began the process to get it back. It wasn't critical but helpful to recover the file. To make a long story short I ran into to some unexpected road blocks. I tried to use PhotoRec to get the job done but with no success.
I'm just looking down the road in the event I might have to recover something important. If it would be better going back to the Fat32 file system I would rather do it sooner than later. Just as a side note I am dual booting between linux and windows.
My Acer notebook has a button that can disable the wireless network device when pressed. Since it is near the ESC key, sometimes I press it on accident, especially when editing something with Vim. When I press the wireless switch to enable the device again, nothing happens. Using the command ifconfig wlan0 up results in the following error:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Unknown error 132
Rebooting and logging on linux again didn't solve anything. I had to log into windows. The device started out disabled, then pressing the button reenabled the device. I'd like to be able either to reenable wireless at will, or outright disable the wireless switch button.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn my system i am using fedora13 unfortunately grub loader(partition deleted) file has gone ,now its not booting the system, some one is saying is install again fedora in same place
what i am thinking is:
1)we will use live cd,
2)open terminal(in live command will work or not ,i typed but its asking you should be root)
3)we will take grub source code from net ,then we will compile it in same path(i think in fedora grub.8.gz),
then is it working

View 1 Replies View RelatedSay I have a file that's downloading (from a source that's hard to re-download from), but accidentally deleted from the filesystem namespace (/tmp/blah), and I'd like to recover this file. Normally I could just cp /proc/$PID/fd/$FD /tmp/blah, but in this case that would only get me a partial snapshot, since the file is still downloading. Furthermore, once the download completes, the downloading process (e.g. Chrome) will close the FD. Any way to recover by inode/create a hard link? Any other solutions? If it makes any difference, I'm mainly concerned with ext4.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Backtrack 4 Final, which is a Linux distro that is Ubuntu based. I had a directory that contained around 5 files. I deleted one of the files, which sent it to the trash. I then zipped the directory up (now containing 4 files), using this command:
zip -r directory.zip directory/
When I then unzipped directory.zip, the file I deleted was in there again. I couldn't believe this, so I zipped up the directory again, and the file reappeared again but this time could not be opened because the operating system said it didn't exist or something. I don't remember the exact error, and I cannot make this happen again. why a file that was deleted from a directory would reappear in that directory after it was zipped up?
I have deleted menu.lst file by mistake.
Now i am afraid to restart my computer as i think This will not get the link for boot the system.
Please let me know how can i restart my computer after shut down.
Will it be a problem in starting of the system.
On a KDE4 environment after downloading some music from rapidshare with JDownloader the archives self-extracted with the symbol in some of the file names. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. Now I'm stuck with those files on my machine. Anyone knows how to get rid of them?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally unplugged my usb drive before unmounting it. In windows this is no big deal, so I'm used to that. However, I'm finding that in Kubuntu 10.04 this is a big deal. Now I can't mount any other drives unless I use the command line. Also, I can't unmount anything, even if I mount it on the command line.
What do i do? I know a reboot will fix this, but if it happens again i will be right back at this point. It should not take a full reboot just to unmount a drive. I have tried umount -l and umount -f and the terminal window just hangs.
I want to delete a file but it says it's in use by another program. I forgot what the command was to look for it.
View 4 Replies View Related1. Install kernel: see #2 (I make it with kernel file in /var/cache/apt/archive)
After installation of kernel, there may be some problems:
2. Win7 disappear in the grub: see the content below "Not see Windows 7: ", #6
3. Cannot connect to the network: see #8.
Quote: While trying to remove old kernels, I delete all of them by accident!!! There're now only two "Memory test" and a "win7" in the grub. Since there's lots of data on the disk, and I have no idea how to keep them safe if reinstalling the system, so I really hope not to do that.
Then I enter Ubuntu 10.10 cd, and sudo apt-get install a kernel (three 2.6.35 or so, of which two with "generic" and not, and one with "image"), everything seems OK. And I guess what I did really changed the system, since the source_list file in the /etc/apt/ did be changed. But the grub still has only 3 options. What else should I do to add the newly installed kernel to the grub? Or What should I do while I delete all kernels by accident?
Is there a way to undelete a just-deleted file in JFS? I can't seem to find any information on it. I'd have sworn I did this before but didn't save the steps.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend had a 320 gig hdd he wanted me to back up. I saved all the files in a folder "Documents & Settings" and even made a 7z archive out of it. I used a 1tb mybook and copied the files to it then tried to delete it. Now i had recovered the files using ubuntu, but moved them to my windows partition. When i got on windows 7 and tried to delete the directory "documents & settings" i got an error saying some files had names that were too large or something like that. So i went on ubuntu and deleted the files from my windows partition without moving them to the ubuntu partition.
Well my 1tb drive just broke so i lost the files on there. Now im trying to back the files up using ubuntu. I am running scalpel at the moment, and it hasnt found anything at all. I really dont know if i set up the configuration file right. I just started scanning my other hdd that contains the linux boot. It has just started so i am not sure if it will find anything or not.
But incase it doesnt, how do i set up the config file to find the file? There are two things i deleted off of my windows partition. a 7z file archive which was the 9GB directory "Documents and Settings" zipped, and the actual folder Documents and Settings.
I would like to ask if there is a way of preventing a file from being deleted, but still retaining the option of editing it. I know that I can set write access off with chmod, but that would also mean that I can't edit the file any more. What I would like to achieve is to make it impossible to remove a file on which I am working.
