Ubuntu Installation :: Make Dell Spash Screen Stop Looping?

Oct 18, 2010

Why, after a successful (I thought) dual boot installation w/ a side-by-side lynx and meerkat install and XP does my system refuse to boot? It just gets to the Dell screen, giving boot options (none of which are making any difference) and keeps looping it. Last night, after re-installing the grub (lost after the XP install) everything was working fine. I powered down and this morning tried to restart and...this. I really don't want to have to reinstall everything and reconfigure and reinstall apps--what can I do? And more importantly, WTF did this happen to begin with?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Ubuntu :: Shut Off All Powersaving, Screen Still Goes Black?

Jun 30, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 for a digital signage PC. I ran it on an Ubuntu 9 machine, worked great and got a new machine to put it on so I did so with 10.04 and so far working great, except after an arbitrary amount of time (seems random, I've seen it go half a day with no problem, then do it twice within 20 minutes)screen acts as though it's going to sleep. The monitor shows No Input and moving the mousetting a key on the keyboard brings it back. I've disabled everything in the power settings, shut off the screensaver, went into the BIOS and changed power savings from S3 to S1 and even tried killing acpid but no luck

However a day or so later it began to reboot when asked, but still won't shut down. I'm dual booting it with Unbuntu 9.04 using grub2, but it's been that way for many months without problems.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: White Screen At Boot Up/shut Down In Natty

Jun 1, 2011

After installing 11.04, I have enabled the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I see this (picture of problem is attached) at startup and shutdown. About nine out of 10 times, I cannot get to the log in screen (even in recovery mode); however, on the tenth try, everything works properly and I can even play games, ex. Braid and World of Goo. I get about 3700 fps running glxgears.

I have run nvidia-settings and dpkg and various other things in an attempt to get it sorted out. Additional Drivers says that the "driver is activated but not currently in use." I'm not sure why that is.

General :: Email Startup Screen Messages Log?

Sep 11, 2011

I currently have a NAS (Ubuntu 10.04) on my network without an access to a monitor due to a lack of a graphics card. I noticed that every time I restart the NAS, it's been taking longer to fully restart. I suspect that something might be wrong, and the warning or error messages are being displayed during startup.

Is there a log file that Ubuntu prints to for everything that is displayed from the moment the system starts up until the login screen? I have email set up on the system via .mailrc and .mstmprc where I could email out with the mail command. I would like to email myself the log file every time the system starts up so I can monitor the system's health.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting GNOME Up And Running - Just Fills Screen With Messages About Missing Files

Sep 9, 2010

I just got Ubuntu to install, which is great. However, during the part of the installation that involved setting up software, something went wrong. I used the alternate installer and toward the end of that step, it told me the step failed. I simply skipped the step because of this. The result: I've got Ubuntu going, but it's only the command line. I need some help getting GNOME installed from here. I searched and saw people saying to use sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, but that just fills my screen with messages about missing files.

Ubuntu :: Get A Message To Flash Up On Screen Based On A List Of Messages In A Text File?

Oct 10, 2010

i've been using some subliminal software on windows for a while now and have found it to be really good. It basically just flashes up a message on screen over the top of whatever is going on at that time but the message is only there for about 30 milli seconds

The message is not there long enough for your conscious mind to read it but the theory is that your subconscious mind will read it.It actually works really well. THe problem is that they dont package a linux version although they do have an OSX version, i'd really like this on ubuntu.

Tried it in wine and it installs but nothing happens after that. Alternatively perhaps somebody can tell me how you could get a message to flash up on screen based on a list of messages in a text file?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Shutdown / Reboot - Get Screen With Green / Bold Status Messages On The Side

Dec 5, 2009

everytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...

But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

Ubuntu Installation :: Shows Multiple CPU Overtemp Messages And Freezes With Totally Black Screen

Jan 20, 2010

I burnt the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to CD and installed on a freshly nuked Dell 2350. It is pentium 4 at 1.8 MHZ with 512 RAM. Just a spare machine I have sitting there. Install went fine, restarted box, boot from hard drive. I get the little white Ubuntu symbol on a black screen and then a black screen with un-occupied white tool bars at top and bottom of screen and a functional mouse pointer, then nothing. It freezes there.

If I restart by holding the power switch in it occasionally shows multiple CPU overtemp messages and freezes with totally black screen. I can run the CD live and everything works like a champ. I'm going to like Ubuntu once I have this sorted out. If I boot from CD and choose the run from first hard drive option, everything loads and works fine. I was able to remove CD, update and save preferences, etc..

On one occasion, I was able to restart and boot from hard drive and it worked fine but usually it freezes at previously mentioned black screen with white bars top and bottom with mouse pointer. Please excuse my ignorance as I have very little knowledge of the inside workings of computers. I didn't even know about burning ISO's or changing boot orders until reading online. For what it's worth, the computer worked fine with no known hardware problems when it was running XP. It also is completely stock with no mods or added/replaced hardware.

Ubuntu :: After Updates - Stayed To Black Screen Then Filled Up With Error Messages Like About Trace Call

Nov 5, 2010

Two days ago I downloaded and installed new updates after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. After the update I was informed I needed to restart. Once my laptop booted up again it stayed to a black screen and then filled up with error messages like something about trace call or call trace?

I had no way to get into my system but I did have some minor success starting in an old kernel. However after a while it would freeze like the graphics driver was going wrong.

Two attempt later of reinstalling 10.10 from disc after deleting the drive content and after updating it would go back to the same.

So I have now disabled updates as I haven't a clue on which one(s) is causing these problems.

I am on a HP Pavillion dv7 with nVidia graphics card and running 64amd Ubuntu.
