Fedora :: Disable Write Cache To Usb Flash Drives?

Aug 27, 2011

I have problem with umounting usb flash drives. When I insert usb flash and copy big files to it ( 400MB ) copy process is quick ( system use cache to store files ). After this when I umount this drive, after 1 minute I got error that this drive cannot be unmounted ( because cache is not stored in drive, umount time limit I think ). How to disable write cache to usb flash drives, change its size or change umount timeout.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Disable Drive Write Cache At Boot With Hdparm?

Jul 16, 2010

I'm testing OpenSUSE 11.3 on a server and I'd like to disable the write cache on all of my drives. In Ubuntu Server I was able to accomplish this with hdparm by adding the appropriate settings to /etc/hdparm.conf

As far as I can find the only thing that OpenSUSE offers is /etc/sysconfig/ide which allows you to force particular DMA modes. I could just put the hdparm commands in /etc/init.d/boot.local but I'd prefer to do it the right way if there is a right way to do this in OpenSUSE.

General :: Mount - Disable Read And Write File Cache On Partition?

Feb 8, 2011

How do i disable the linux file cache on a xfs partition (both read an write).

We have a xfs partition over a hardware RAID that stores our RAW HD Video. Most of the shoots are 50-300gb each so the linux cache has a hit-rate of 0.001%.

I have tryed the sync option but it still fills up the cache when copinging the files. ( about 30x over per shoot :P )

/etc/fstab:
/dev/sdb1 /video xfs sync,noatime,nodiratime,logbufs=8 0 1

Im running debian lenny if it helps.

I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.

Fedora Hardware :: Can't Write To Flash Memory. Automatically Set As Read-only

Jan 21, 2010

I used to be able to write to my SD memory card but just recently it is being automatically mounted as read-only. I checked the read-only tab and tried to set it to the lock position, and to the unlock position. Neither position makes a difference. It was working normally a few days ago. I also tried changing the permission using su

ls -lt gives the following result
drwxr-xr-x 4 col root 16384 1970-01-01 01:00 CANON_DC
chmod chgrp and chown in su mode don't change anything either.

I tried mounting a different 1GB SD card and it works perfectly. I noticed that when I mount this card I get a window asking me what I want to do, but I don't get this on the other card. It must some kind of setting related to the unwriteable card.

I am using F10 2.6.27.41-170.2.117.fc10.i686

Ubuntu :: Solid State Disk As Cache For Regular Hard Drives?

Nov 16, 2010

60 gigabyte SSDs are down around US$100.

It seems like the optimal use would be as a cache for the regular hard drives in my computer. Eliminating the need for a fast hard drive, so I can just use a slow 2TB (~US$100) drive with a SSD cache.

Is there a good way to do this yet?

It seems like it would be nice to be able to exclude some files from caching, for things like bittorrent.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Write To USB Thumb Drives Any More?

Jun 18, 2010

I was able to read and write to my USB thumb drives until I mounted a USB thumb drive with an autoinstaller, and every since then all of my flash drives show up with the owner as "root". I've tried changing the owner, and I'm not allowed- even with using sudo chown.

I don't get an error with that, but the owner isn't changed. I can read from the drives but not write to them. (I found that I can copy to the flash drive by using sudo cp, but I want to get away from command line stuff. I have too much to do to be constantly dropping into terminal mode!)I had no problems until the very minute I mounted that flash drive.I've read a few threads, and found other people with symptoms similar to mine, but when I try the fixes suggested, they didn't work.I've also not been able to locate anything that the flash drive autoinstaller changed or put in, but I must admit that I still am a relative newbie to Linux (been around computers since the early 70's, around Windows since 92-93, around OS/2 94-96, and Linux for only a year or so- and haven't learned that much command line stuff yet!).

Software :: RAID 5 With Even Number Of Drives Gives Bad Write Performance

Oct 27, 2010

So I have been doing some RAID 5 performance testing and am getting some bad write performance when configuring the RAID with an even number of drives. I'm running kernel 2.6.30 with software based RAID 5. This seems rather odd and doesn't make much since to me. For RAID 0 my performance consistently increases as I add more drives, but this is not the case for RAID 5. Does anyone know why I might be seeing lower performance when constructing my RAID 5 with 4 or 6 drives rather than 3 or 5?

Debian Multimedia :: VCDs Do Not Play - Drives Otherwise Work Very Well - Also Write DVDs And CDs Often

Worse, each of the three DVD players then act in a loop, seeking the LG DVD-RAM drive endlessly. But the drives otherwise work very well and I also write DVDs and CDs often.I have tested the VCDs in Windows machines with VLC media player, and the VCDs work wonderfully. This is kind of strange. Debian Multimedia :: Disable Write Caching For Removable Media?

Feb 9, 2010

how to make removable media (e.g. USB sticks) not have any write caching. I want to prevent data loss when they are removed after file copying appears done but before write caches are written. I'm using Gnome on Squeeze.

I've found suggestions of adding the 'sync' mount option to /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options in the Gnome configuration. However this doesn't seem to completely eliminate write buffering, as the drive activity light continues for several seconds after file copying appears done, and unmounting drives produces a dialog box which says to wait whilst data is written to disk.
