Fedora Installation :: Enter The Password And Get - Authentication Failure - 12
May 9, 2010
I just installed Fedora 12 on HP Pavilion (dual boot with Windows vista). I made it all the way through the installation and created my user account. A few seconds later I got the login screen asking for my password. I enter the password and get "Authentication Failure."
The name that shows up on the login screen is my full name, not the user name that I created. Is that wrong?

I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 inside windows and every time I go to the terminal and type "su" it asks me for a password. Well the password I set before the install doesn't work, it gives me an authentication failure. I thought that since it was inside windows it didn't set me as a root user. I go to user groups and I see my name there and then "root" above it, but its grayed out. Is there a default root password I can enter?

I have a rather difficult problem. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. What to do?edit: this is NOT the login window, just the little dialog that pops up when you need elevated privileges.

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 which I like very much (except for Unity - so I am using Ubuntu Classic).
Whenever I try to use "su - " I get Password Authentication Failure. I have checked Caps Lock (obviously) and have also tried resetting the password using "passwd" - but with no success.
If I use "sudo ...." with a command the password is accepted.
I have the same software installed on two computers but the problem only occurs on one - the other is OK!

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. I just did an install and the os is up and running. During install, I set a root password and also set up a regular user account. The only option at login is the regular user acct. Needless to say, the os asks me to provide the root pw for just about everything I need to do.get an authentication failure. (I assume that this is the same as permission). I can find plenty of info on how to restrict access but nothing relevant to my problem. Just to rule out an install problem, I installed the os a 2nd time. I am very sure I have my passwords correct. One other thing to note is that on the 1st install, I used a different pw for root and regular user. On the 2nd, just to keep is as simple as possibl I used the same pw for root and reg user account. I am new to debian, but the distro that I have been using (slackware)

Each time I enter the root password it is not accepted and I am unable to get past it and the installation fails. This is the error message that is issued:[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.mf2zCf] Repository already exists.I am able to enter the root password in a terminal session without any problem along with using the Install Software option in the main menu.

I have installed fedora 14 in my computer. I installed some applications from root. I created a user id. I am unable to install my internet (broadband connection) now. every time it shows the error "Authentication failure" "install from root" something like that. How can I switch between user and root. Or how can I login as root again?

My system software is installed on an encrypted LVM on hda1 and hda2. My home directory takes up the whole of hdb1 which is also encrypted. I can boot up into the kde desktop okay, but when I open up konsole and type 'su' and my root password I get the message "su: Authentication failure". I am absolutely certain that I am using the right password.
Even more strangely, if I fire up synaptic and give it that same password I am able to install software. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's gone wrong and how I can fix it?
I can also type Ctrl-Alt-F2 and log in as root to do administrative tasks without any problems so I cannot understand why konsole has locked me out.

we are using linux email server axigen past few years. we keep port open ssh and pop, smtp webmail etc. ssh use for remote trouble shooting. so through firewall it is globally accessable. we notice many attacks coming to our machine, also some people try to enter in our system but failure. as example see below a log come in messages file
Mar 17 09:19:50 sa1 sshd(pam_unix)[21231]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=210.51.13.120 user=root how we can secure more. as per my understanding only good long strong password can stop to prevent from attacks.

I am about to sell a computer with ubuntu on it, and I created a user with no password and deleted my previous user. Now there is only one user account, and it has a blank password. However, any time I need root access (sudo, configuring user accounts, etc.) the system won't accept a blank password. It just says "authentication failure." Deleting my other account was silly. I am stuck with just one user account with a blank password!

Im using FEDORA 12 (constantine )....Everything was working fine.....until yesterday when i tried login to my GUI(gdm) it says authentication failure. so i tried logging in from CLI and it didnt worked either...(it didnt say "password incorrect",rather it it simply reset the screen to "login name:",thats weird...right?)
Then i tried to login as root from from CLI (by default Fedora does not support root login to GUI?) and i was able to login.....
Then it said "System powering down in one minute"............. i didnt understand why that happened.....! but it didnt power down in one minute...
I tried changing my user passwd...still no change.....

I bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.

I managed to get Ubuntu installed, however, it just won't let me log in. I perform the net-install, and tell it my user name and password. However, once the install has completed, and the system rebooted, I cannot log in to Ubuntu (on X-screen or TTY). I've tried it twice - once with Karmic Koala Ubuntu installed with GNOME - the other with just CLI and they both fail.

I can connect to this machine, from my smart-phone and a laptop using its IP Address 77.xx.xx.xxx
I'm getting user OK but its not accepting my password or one I just made on another account
This is whats happening:-
What layer of extra security is stopping this working, as the guy attempting access is trying to send a file to big to attach to an e-mail.

I just got Fedora 12, and I used su root to change the bin ownership to my primary developer account. For some reason, though, all subsequent attempts to log in as root have had authentication failure, be it through su or through the startup login screen. This does NOT occur for adminstrator tools such as Groups and Users.

I've just upgraded from 9.10 on a system that has an encrypted root partition encrypted using the following guide:
[URL]
On boot, prior to the LUKS password prompt, I see the error:
Code:
cannot open file /etc/console-setup/boottime.kmap.gz
The consequence is that the keyboard does not respond, the password cannot be entered, and the root partition cannot be unlocked.
This behavior occurs on all 2.6.32.x kernels but falling back to my previous kernel, 2.6.31.9-rt works just fine.
This is on a production system and is not running in a virtual machine, so the issue is not:
[URL]
I have tried running sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, which does regenerate the initram-fs for the desire kernel, but it does not solve the problem.
The guide's initram hook includes the lines:
Code:
mkdir -p ${DESTDIR}/etc/console-setup
cp /etc/console-setup/boottime.kmap.gz ${DESTDIR}/etc/console
... but my understanding of the initram stages of the boot process are hazy and I am unclear what the intent is behind the lines.

I have installed Fedora11 onto my Dell laptop; as nice as it is whenever I log in I am prompted to "enter password for default keyring to unlock". Now, I don't recall ever setting one up, each password I try (e.g. the user or root) fails and gives me the prompt again. After a few clicks of "deny" it does go away but I want to know what it is and if I can stop it from prompting me).

When I am upgrading, installing something or doing something that requires me to be Authenticated by using my password I just type it in and hit enter. However, each time I just click return after typing in the password it does not work. The window accepts my password but thats it and the window just sits there until it times out a few mins later. For this to work properly I have to type the password and then use the mouse to click the Authentication button. Why is this? Is there a way to solve this so I can just type in my password and click return like I do with everything else?

I have (had?) a 36GB 10000rpm disc and a 500GB 7200rpm disc on my machine. I had Windows 7 and Fedora 12 installed on the faster disc with the larger one as storage (for videos etc etc). Yesterday I tried to install Fedora 13 on the fast one wiping off Windows 7 and Fedora 12 in the process. So I told Anaconda just to install on the smaller disc and the install seemed to be going perfectly until it had installed something over 900 of the 1200 or so of the packages it was supposed to be going to install when the monitor screen went blank (black) and the monitor could not detect any video and switched itself off. Trying to switch the monitor on again it still found nothing. Watching the hard-drive and DVD drive lights I waited until it had finished installing (when, of course, it also ejected the disc). I then tried to reboot the computer without the disc and it stopped at the motherboard flash screen as it did (and does) when I try to boot with the Fedora 13 install disc (and also with my old Fedora 12 install disc).
I have not touched the hardware in any way. Before I downloaded Fedora 13 (and after I'd backed everything up) I had opened the case to check how much dust was in the CPU cooler fins but since there was little I just very gently brushed and Hoovered - the machine worked for a couple of hours thereafter while I downloaded Fedora 13 burned it to a DVD and for most of the install as above.I updated the BIOS with ASUS EZ Flash and but it has not solved the problem.
Having disconnected the "faulty" disc I have installed Fedora 13 on the large slower 500GB disc and it works OK but if I connect the faster 36GB disc (before trying to boot, of course) I just get to the motherboard flash screen. If the disc failed why/how did the computer continue to install Fedora 13 from the DVD? Is there any significance in the monitor having gone blank?
