Oct 30, 2009I have recently moved to Fedora 8 from Ubuntu. I am trying to run a .JNLP application, for which I need Java Web Start installed. While browsing the internet I realized that I need JDK installed, onto which I will need to download Java Web Start. I could not find JDK in my package manager so I downloaded the following files manually:
jdk-6u3-linux-amd64-rpm.bin
javaws-1_0_1_02-linux-int.zip
I have not much had the chance to experiment with installing software using .bin and .zip packages, so any details such as which directory to copy the folder to are good.

Jan 25, 2010I am trying to install matlab onto my personal laptop. When I start to download I get a file "download_agent" I have updated my java to the most recent edition and when I run "javaws download_agent" I get this error :

May 17, 2011I have a web app that asks "What do you want to do with the jnlp file? save it or open with?" I have downloaded the sun java that I have used on other versions, but on puppy 5.25 I am having trouble getting this to work. How do I get it to open the file?

Aug 18, 2011I use a small application called bendometer.jnlp. On my desktop running 10.04 it runs fine after opening with "OpenJDK Java 6 Web Start".
I have installed the same application on my brand new laptop running Ubuntu 11.04 and it was running perfectly until yesterday. Yesterday it hung during the startup and since I killed the hung process it has refused to start again. If I now run it in a terminal using the command

May 5, 2010I am used to Ubuntus simple sharing with samba. Just install it, reboot and then share the files.Then do I klick on network folder and see all the shared files on the computers in the network.
How do I install it so I only need to go into network folder and see the other computers shared files.Then, how do I share files?
I hope it's not so difficult and that I have to change i config-files.
I am new to Fedora.

Jan 13, 2010On a KDE4 environment after downloading some music from rapidshare with JDownloader the archives self-extracted with the symbol in some of the file names. Those files couldn't be renamed or deleted, the file manager said that the files didn't exist - very weird. The files should have had some swedish characters in their file names. Now I'm stuck with those files on my machine. Anyone knows how to get rid of them?

Feb 11, 2010Before installing Fedora on my laptop I backed up my files onto a USB key. I wiped the hard disk and installed Fedora 12. I copied my files back to my home directory - but all the text files are now binary! Mar 7, 2011I recently upgraded from FC12 to FC14 due to errors using yum and rpm. I keep running into mirror sites with RPM files that don't install. These site have what appear to be valid RPM files, but if I use wget to retrieve the file and run "file" on it, it turns out to be an HTML file. I understand the fact that if a file is corrupted, it won't install, but I can open these "RPM" files using Mozilla after changing the extension from RPM to HTML. When I open the new HTML file, I'm prompted by the browser to open or save the RPM file. If I save the RPM file pointed to by the HTML file, I can download and install it using rpm -ivvh unless a dependency check fails. how does anyone install using yum if the package is an HTML file with an RPM extension. If I use wget on this file and then run "file" on it, here is the output:

If I change the extension of this file to HTML and open it with my browser, I am prompted to download the RPM file which turns out to be a true RPM v3.0 file. Is anyone else having this problem or can anyone point me in the right direction to download the correct RPM file. I am running behind a proxy server and have installed cntlm, configured wgetrc, yum.conf and .curlrc to use the proxy server. I am able to download and install most of the simpler applications where the dependencies are either installed or non required.

Jun 26, 2010What is the easiest way to make it so that these transferred files will not be completely locked out and require me to go and change them one by one sohat i can access them without having to go root. Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.

On my desktop I logged into the live cd and started copying over a big file (1.5 GB) (i.e. copying from the desktop computer to the server). After copying about half the fil, the download fails with an error message about the filesystem being read-only.I've seen this exact same behavior on both i386 and x86_64 of the same live CD, but don't know why it's happening. I want to migrate my bind configuration from A to B I've read the release notes and man pages and I can't see why copying

/var/named/*
I checked /etc/sysconfig/named too... Seems to have no effect on my brand new install on Fedora 11. Host B stays basically un-configured.

Jun 10, 2011I get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.

Dec 30, 2010I currently have three hard drives: (2) 150GB IDE drives (windows) and (1) 500GB SATA drive (fedora13). I'm trying to move files on the IDE drives to the SATA drive so that I only need the SATA drive. The SATA drive is running Fedora 13 and the other two were old NTFS drives that I just use for space now. So most of the files copied fine, however, for a handful of them I receive the following error:Error splicing file: Value too large for defined data type This happens when I try to copy files not only from drive to drive, but even from folder to folder on the same drive. I've read about a 2GB file size limit, but none of the files are that size. I have no idea why this is happening.

Feb 17, 2011I had fedora 13 installed on my computer which is used a server for my php development. I had all my projects on that server. Not sure what caused this but my linux is not loading at all. It tries to load the kernel but fails and restart the machine.I confirmed that there is no hardware failure. I am planning to reinstalling fedora on the machine but I can't loose my projects which were in /var/www folder and the /home directory. Unfortunately I didn't take back for last 1 month.I wanted to know:
1) Is there any way I can recover the data for www and home folder
2) If I reinstall the fedora again then will it delete my old data on machine.
Really in a difficult situation as my projects development is halted due to this. Want to have some advice before reinstalling fedora.
