Fedora :: 12 Restored Files From USB Key - Source Files Are All Binary?

Feb 11, 2010

Before installing Fedora on my laptop I backed up my files onto a USB key. I wiped the hard disk and installed Fedora 12. I copied my files back to my home directory - but all the text files are now binary! Any ideas why this would be or how to fix it??---------- Post added at 10:54 AM CST ---------- Previous post was at 10:35 AM CST ----------Hmm it seems that only some files are binary. Looks like some .tgz files are corrupted too.---------- Post added at 11:02 AM CST ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 AM CST ----------Damn - I wonder if the files weren't completely written to the usb key before I removed it. I don't remember their being a safe mount option in Fedora 10 - but I definitely unmounted it before removing it from the laptop.

Software :: Join 2 Text Files Based On First Number Present In Every Line Of The 2 Text Files?

Jan 22, 2010

I have 2 text files : file1.txt and file2.txt

cat file1.txt

15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces

cat file2.txt

2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
54 this is sentence3file2

I would like to join these 2 files. The result should look as follows :

cat joinedfile.txt

2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces

==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Can't Run (execute) Any Binary Files FC12 / Solve This?

Nov 20, 2009

I have recently installed FC12 64 bit. I have been using Fedora now since I first installed FC9 a few years back.

My main problem is that I am unable to execute any files at all using the ./filename command. I spent last night trying to run the ipod bootloader and all I kept on getting was the message: unable to run binary file. I used the command chmod +x ipodpatcher before attempting to run it, but with no luck. After a while of frustration and a few suggestions online I booted up my Ubuntu OS and the file ran first time. Am I missing a program on FC12? Do I need to install something else?

I feel it may be simple, however I have never experienced this problem before using Fedora. Any suggestions?

General :: Control Gzip Compression Rates While Archiving Files With Tar?

Jun 4, 2011

I have a script which periodically backs up a directory using the command "tar -czvf [name] [directory]" but my problem is that the script has recently been putting a lot of stress on the server (Minecraft SMP) and tends to lag players as it backs up, which recently has been taking nearly 5 minutes. So I need to know if there's a way to control the GZip compression rate at the same time that it archives and backs up the files?I understand that I can first tar the files and then GZip them separately with a different compression rate afterwards, but this would not work because it names the files with the current server time, which sometimes changes in between commands.

Programming :: Command For Find/Replace In Text Files (inc. Files In Sub-folders)?

Oct 11, 2010

I found this command that works great finding and replacing a simple string to another in files located in that folder and all sub-folders.

Code: find . -name '*.php' | xargs perl -pi -e 's/OldText/NewText/g'

The problem I have is that I need to replace a more complex string, like this: Old string: /mnt/stor6-wc2-dfw1/627896/982574/ New string: /mnt/stor8-wc2-dfw1/369587/302589/ There I don't know how to do it... since the / is what separates the old from the new strings, and the strings that I want to replace have / in it. Also, I would like to know how to specify under what folder replace the files, for example, I want that it search/replaces all files under /var/www/mysite/htdocs folder.

Fedora :: Cannot Create Text Files While Using SU

GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)

Aborted (core dumped) I'm following the Fedora Bible (2010 edition) and I'm trying to get KDE up. This is what it says to do: After running switchdesk or switchdesk-gui, you need to perform one other task. As root, edit or create the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop. Add the following lines to the file:
DESKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

However, I receive that error. Does it want me to log in as root? I tried and it wouldn't let me, so I tried looking up how to do it, and I needed to change another text file with su (which is my problem in the first place). Just to be clear, this error occurs in any directory that I'm in. (home, or otherwise)

Software :: Sed Syntax For Binary Wrapped EPS Files

Oct 8, 2010

I'm having a problem with sed syntax. So far I can sed the HiResBoundingBox to capture the images I want and output to pdf. But now ever so often I get an illustrator file that has hexadecimal values at the start and end of the file. Imagemagick powers through this and still creates the rastorized previews I want but the gs dies using the epstopdf script to output the vector files. If I hand remove the hex on both ends of the file, both functions work fine and the file can still be managed in illustrator but if I resave it the hex comes back. It only happens on a few files plus it seems to serve no purpose as the files work perfectly without it. I cannot get the sed statement to work. I've tried a blue million variations with no luck. Copied some that I found, same result.

Start of bad eps file:
ADOÆ ^@^@^@5O
^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@UO
^@im^K^@yy^@^@%!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0^M

The way I need it to look:
%!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0^M
End of file the same:
%AI9_PrivateDataEnd^M
@ @
just needs to be:
%AI9_PrivateDataEnd^M
Tried
sed -n '/%/,$p' < = blank file
sed -i 's/%/,$!d/g' = same
sed 's/%/,$!d/g' = same
sed 's/%/,$!d' = same

I can't seem to find any proper reference to this.

Programming :: Patch Binary Files From Different Library?

Jul 2, 2010

I am currently implementing an upgrade system for silent upgrades in my application. I am stuck. I need the code to patch binary files. But I can't find a good third party library. My code is in C# so I would prefer a C# library, but right now I would even go as far as using a library in another language and bind it into my C# code. But I just can't find a good patch/diff library. I must be missing something. Surely there must be some libraries out there that give us the ability to patch binary files?

General :: Loop Append Text To Text Files?

Jan 15, 2010

may be an advanced question but I need to know how to do this. Here at work I am in charge of recruiting and we have about 1,000 resumes in already. All of the resumes are in a .pdf format. I need to rename every .pdf in the following format:{firstnameLastname}.pdfThe only way I know how to do this is to convert all the .pdf files to text, extract the name out of the first few lines of text, import into excel, and then use VBA to rename the files in mass:Here is my logic so far:~Deskop/a = houses all the .pdfresumesOpen terminal: Code: cd ~/Desktop/afor f in *.pdf; do pdftotext -raw $f; done That will convert all of the preceding resumes into text filesNow I would like to append the name of the text file into the last line of the text file. So, for example, for Resume1.txt, I want to append "Resume1.txt" to the last line within Resume1.txt. So after I run the command I open Resume1.txt and on the last line within I want to see "Resume1.txt" on the last line, at the end of the resume. How can I do this? I would like to use a loop and have the terminal append the filename to the body of the text file until all of the have been appended.

Ubuntu :: Moving Files To A Pendrive Renders 0 Bytes Files And Files Gets Deleted

Jun 10, 2011

I get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.
