Fedora :: XFree And LibX11 64 Bit On FC15?
Sep 6, 2011
I have been trying to compile a package and I am having some difficulties linking to libX11.so. It seems that it reports that XFree is undefined. Is there some work around for this?

I've been compiling a lot of games recently and most of them requires me to add libX11 to the linker command line. I can't think of nothing but to take a look at the Makefile and add -lX11. It works, but now, I'm compiling from a git repo, and I know the change will removed once I update the my working copy.To make it short, is it possible to add libX11 permanently to the linker command line?

I'm looking to install an nVIDIA driver (sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53-pkg2.run is the command I used) but it tells me I need to do it when the xfree isn't running
So what I'm looking for is a way to boot up to the command line, is that possible on SUSE 11.2?

Recently installed FC15 XFCE on my new hard drive in my laptop, bring it home from work and it wont boot up.
Only changes I made at work were removing the standard package manager, replacing it with yumex, and slightly changing the panels to more suit how I like to work. Other than that just a little browsing the web on work's wireless connection.
Now it will not boot at all. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+2 and the last command I see is "Started SYSV: Late init script for live image.."
Tried booting into the original kernel (rather than the updated one from when I first installed) and the writing is smaller so I can see an earlier message where it failed a process. This is relating to akmod_nvidia but I installed that a couple of days ago and have restarted a few times since without problems before.
"Starting LSB: Builds and install new kmods from akmod package failed, see 'systemct1 status akmods'service' for more details"
I do not even get a command like where I can type with Ctrl+Alt+2 to try running anything.
I tried adding "runlevel=3" to the end of the kernel line in Grub. Is that the correct way to try and force into command line?

I have just upgraded my FC14 laptop to FC15 and although tsclient was 'transferred', it would not run and so I did not have a working graphical interface to make RDP connections.
As the app wasn't running, I removed it and then discovered that tsclient is listed as 'orphaned' and 'deprecated' in the repos, with the latest working version being for FC13.
Is there really no GUI interface for using RDP in Fedora 15 - I can't believe I have to drop down to a command prompt to run rdesktop!?

I'm going to remove Gnome3 from FC15 and, possibly, install KDE. I'm not sure about the options I have for it:I saw I can remove just the gnome-shell package. This makes me wonder if it is possible to replace the gnome-shell functionality with a gnome-2 equivalent, getting some of the gnome2 back how much of gnome-related packages can I remove? For example, is it advisable to remove gdm in favour of kdm? Are there gtk/gnome programs that are "better" than kde equivalents and are thus best left untouched, along with their dependencies? finally, somewhat unrelated, do you know good tutorials for gnome2.X expatriates to learn modern kde?

I currently have an FC15 KDE, set up as I like it as a media server, and with squeezeboxserver (for Logitechs media system) running fine. But I'd like to set it up as headless - and it presently needs to have a monitor attached. No keyboard or mouse and it will boot to the login screen (so not a BIOS issue). I need to get it to boot without needing a monitor or requiring a graphical log in. I can administer via SSH and Squeezebox server puts up a webpage. FC15 doesn't use inittab any more, so changing run levels is fraught. I don't want to play with targets without a safety line ...

what the hell the error message shown below and in the attachment means? Apt-get, Aptitude, dpkg and member limiter's 3/21 post all give the same outcome. Do I need to simply remove the offending .deb file from /var/cache/apt/archives? Do I need to install squeeze from scratch? (I'm installing over a tempermental lenny-sid hybrid installation.) This thing is blocking installation and configuration of 28 other packages.
Code: dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libx11-dev_2%3a1.3.3-4_i386.deb (--unpack): short read on buffer copy for backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/share/doc/libx11-dev/libX11.txt.gz'

I have used preupgrade to moved from fc14 to fc15. With fc14 I had my two usb 3.0 ports working. However, with fc15 my usb 3.0 ports are disabled. I have read the instruction at the common fc15 bugs doc and removed the kernel parameter xhci.enable=1 and also erased the file /etc/pm/config.d/xhci. Still the usb 3.0 ports are not working. I am using kernel 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64. I cannot use the 2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64 since there no nvidia drivers for it.

I'm building a replacement service, and in the not to distant future, I'll need to change the host name and IPs (ipv4) (I'll also be doing this on the fedora 10 box I'm replacing)
I can look around and edit a bunch of files to make it happen, but there has to be an easier way.

I don't know if FC15 has the iptable rules like the ones shown below by default or not but I wanted a second opinion about the safety they provide. Why is icmp accepted (INPUT rule 1) from/to all ip? and is it better to remove this rule? When the protocol is all (INPUT rule 2), does it mean from ip layer and above?? and is it required/safe to have this rule? The 3rd rule is to allow tcp-port 22 connections (ssh) to/from all ip. I think this is correctly set and required. The 4th rule in INPUT table rejects pings with the icmp-host-prohibited message; which I don't think is the best solution. Instead it can be set to silently drop icmp packets. Then, the FORWARD table uses reject instead of silent drop for forwarding icmp ping packets.
Code:
what do you think about the new rules and their order?

I'm running Gnome on Fedora 15 (currently in failback mode). I've installed the Fedora provided xscreensaver RPMs and ensured that xscreensaver is running when I login (not gnome-screensaver). The problem is, when I try to lock my screen using one of the multiple "lock screen" icons nothing happens. The following line does appear in my ~/.xsession-errors file when the icon is clicked.
** (gnome-panel:3548): WARNING **: Could not ask screensaver to lock: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnkn own: The name org.gnome.ScreenSaver was not provided by any .service files
This line appears regardless of whether or not the gnome-screensaver RPM is installed. I've tried with both gnome-screensaver installed and without it installed with the same result.
Running "xscreensaver-command -lock" from the command line does successfully lock the screen.
Also, the screen lock icons do work when gnome-screensaver is installed and is set as the default screensaver. Anyway, I just upgrade to Fedora 15 recently (I've used all previous version of Fedora) and this is the first time I've run into this problem.

I have just upgraded my Lenovo T61 from FC14 to FC15. Under FC14, I had the system set up to hibernate when the lid was closed. When I opened the lid, the system would automatically come out of hibernation in just a few seconds and I would be back to where I was.
Under FC15, I have also set it to hibernate when the lid closes. When I open the lid, nothing happens until I tap the power button, and then it comes out of hibernation via some kind of reboot: I see the Lenovo splash screen, then the machine beeps and goes into a wakeup routine, which takes much longer than it did under FC14.

I've been an ubuntu user for a while, and just started trying out fc15. In nautilus, there used to be an "emblems" side panel, as well as an emblems tab in the file properties window. (emblems being the little overlays you could assign to files or folders, like a tick or a cross or a smiley fdace or whatever). Is there some package I need to install to get this functionality back? Has it never been present in fedora, or is it a change in gnome3 / fc15?

After doing an upgrade from FC14 to FC15, I then updated the packages by doing:
yum update yum
yum clean all
yum --releasever=15 --disableplugin=presto distro-sync
I then get the following voluminous list of issues (148 pre-existing rpmdb problems). I've done an rpm --rebuilddb but no help.
Running rpm_check_debug
ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:
libclutter-gtk-0.10.so.0()(64bit) is needed by gthumb-2.12.3-2.fc15.x86_64
Please report this error in [URL]
Found 148 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows:
ImageMagick-c++-6.6.4.1-15.fc14.x86_64 has missing requires of ImageMagick = ('0', '6.6.4.1', '15.fc14')
akonadi-1.5.3-1.fc14.x86_64 has missing requires of libboost_program_options-mt.so.1.44.0()(64bit)
alchemist-1.0.37-8.fc12.x86_64 has missing requires of python(abi) = ('0', '2.6', None) .....
Your transaction was saved, rerun it with: yum load-transaction /tmp/yum_save_tx-2011-05-27-10-30qO4br9.yumtx
Well, it appears that downloading and installing libclutter-gtk-0.10.so.0 seemed to fix all the subsequent yum error messages, and I was able to install all the packages.

Upgraded from FC14 X64 to FC15 X64 yesterday. I've used gnome2 forever, its worked very well for me.My workstation has 4 displays driven by two nvidia cards. One with dual dvi outputs, the other with one dvi one vga. I use the proprietary nvidia driver, NOT nouveau. Each card ties its displays together with twinview, and then xinerama spans across the who cards. This worked splendidly on gnome2, WITHOUT compiz. I used to use compiz when i had two displays so that I could have nice wobbly windows and transparencies, all very nice, but the extra area of the 4 displays was much more important to me. See, xinerama breaks compiz.
When i upgraded from FC14 to 15, my displays went amok, i ended up having to upgrade my nvidia driver, an then couldnt get things working in gnome 3. Finally i fell back to kde, kde4, and lxde both work just as gnome 2 did with my 4 displays. Gnome 3 with Gnome-shell fails spectacularly. Even if I fall back to two displays on one card, its wonky, things dont display properly, and the overview sometimes breaks such that it wont even come up anymore. Gnome3 without gnome-shell also does not work, in fact, i cant even get into gnome, it gives me some error and logs me out when all 4 monitors are enabled, and with only 2, it works, but.. well.. I want my 4 displays!I'm almost certain that compiz is to blame. Gnome's "Fail safe" uses compiz, and i'm betting the compiz isnt working on my 4 displays, causing said error and logout. I have no idea what the heck gnome-shell is doing. It actually displays on two monitors, while the other two are black. The mouse is able to display on all 4, i'm unable to interact with the displays which show gnome, but the displays which are black, seem to respond to my clicks, but they respond on the two montiros which display gnome. Very strange.

I'm trying to install dahdi on FC15.
yum list 'dahdi*'
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Installed Packages
dahdi-tools.i686 2.4.1-1.fc15 @fedora
dahdi-tools-devel.i686 2.4.1-1.fc15 @fedora
dahdi-tools-libs.i686 2.4.1-1.fc15 @fedora
I have dahdi installed. And a wildcard card:
dahdi_hardware
pci:0000:04:07.0 wcfxo-1057:5608 Wildcard X100P
modprobe dahdi returns: "FATAL: Module dahdi not found."
and dahdi_genconf finds no spans.
I have commented out the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/dahdi.blacklist.conf:
"#blacklist wcfxo", which I believe corresponds to the appropriate module.
However modprobe wcfxo indiates that module is not found. I have an up to date fc15 installation.

Under Gnome2 you were able to stop the OS from turning off the screen by selecting "never" as the time to turn off the display when the computer was idle. This was found under the screensaver configuration. The screen tool for Gnome3 does not offer "never" as an option. Does anyone know how to stop Fedora 15/Gnome 3 from turning off the display?
