Fedora :: Vista Is Completely Messed Up
Mar 28, 2010
Seems like everything started after using the command grub-install /dev/sda1 [the partition where Vista is installed]When I choose Vista as the operating system it displays a scary error: Code: Windows failed to start. The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. However, Windows XP & Fedora 12 work perfectly.

I've got a very annoying problem with my top bar and the notification area. The icons/applet's order is completely messed up. The icon's overlap, some do not show at all, and sometimes some do not load (seeing a black square instead). Most applet's can also be accesed through Applications or System, but especially the wireless app is necessary to be there. Perhaps there is a way to get to it via another way then the notification area, but then I dont know where . The problem isn't consistent; sometimes it's there, sometime's it's not.

This is an install of openSUSE-11.2 32bit. Obvoiusly, during the fresh install something went wrong. The HDD has 4 primary partitions, meant for /boot / swap /home (in that order). Instead of /home partition /dev/sda4 is mounted on /usr.
Currently it looks like this:
Code:
# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000cbdf6

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and now it's messed up my Windows Vista partition. When I try to load Windows it boots to a strange login menu with low resolution. It then takes me to a screen with options like Repair/Fix, Recovery, Complete Recovery... I'll click Repair and and then it will say No errors found, Shut down, Restart.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I did a horrible mistake due to lapse in my concentration. Here is the 80 GB IDE disk geometry:
=> C: Windows XP SP2 15 GB partition
=> D: NTFS parition - 10 GB
=> E:F:G:H: NTFS partitions on the Windows Extended partition.
=> On the same Extended partition, there exists Linux /swap and /root partitions.
What happened was:
a) I wanted to delete the H: parition which was residing adjacent to Linux partition
b) By mistake I opened the Explorer and clicked the Mouse on H: partition and left it like that (forgot)
c) I opened Add/Remove program list but did nothing, to do few uninstalls after partition deletion.
d) Now I opened compmgmt.msc for Disk Management then deleted the H: partition!
Then XP reacted strangely and got almost hung
e) Then I switched OFF and ON the PC.
f) Most shocking was GRUB screen vanished (crash console appears) which means that Linux partition got deleted instead of H: partition!!
It's important to share with you that Fedora Core 12 possess the default BOOT flag. I thought that it's nothing big deal, only a case of Boot flag toggle with DOS bootable CD but am shell shocked to find after hitting the fdisk from DOS it says Error reading the disk!!! I felt like collapsed for a while, don't know how I did such a mistake. how to boot into my Windows XP. I can't afford to loose data or bear the expense on Data recovery

I played around with KDE and eventually messed up. My right click on the desktop doesn't work and the panel goes from the original color to black when I extend it. I even lost the "clickable" in the upper right part of the desktop. I already tried System Settings > Desktop > Defaults > Apply. Doesn't work for me.How could I revert to the default settings?

I'm running F11 with an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I donloaded latest version of the ATI driver and installed it (without paying to much attention to versions and pre-reqs). This caused my display to be unusable in Gnome, nothing can be made out of it.
Was hoping to be able to repair this if I atleast had a bash prompt, but when I press ctrl-alt-F6 (or any F-button) my computer restarts. how I could fix this without reinstalling?

My computer is a dual boot between windows xp and fedora 12. I am using grub and my first boot selection default was windows. My computer has the following specs:
-AMD athlon xp 2400+ at stock speed 2.0Ghz
-640mb of ram, 2x256mb, 1x128mb, all 266mhz speed
-250gb SATA harddrive, seagate
-Nvidia GeForce 4mx AGP video card
-ASUS A7V600 rev. 1.00 motherboard
I booted up fedora 12 today(12/17/2009) and did a fedora software update (task bar->system->administration->software update). It said it found 94 new updates release on (12/16/09), so click update, and the computer did its updates and reboot. Now my grub boot loader is messed up (boot default was windows, now its not) and random apps crash, like gedit, so I can't edit my grub settings to boot to windows and linux is now useless because apps keep crashing. As of right now I am using another computer to post this. I know one of the updates was a Fedora 12 kernel update. And the new updated fedora 12 "automatic bug reporting tool" does not work any more, after the update.
Some ideas I have, but I have no idea how to do them:
-uninstall last updates
-repairand/or restore bad files
This is important because I need to use some of the apps/programs for work.

I upgraded to Fedora 15 (64 bit) on my laptop using preupgrade. Everything is working great except for a small problem. My menus are completely messed up. In F14, I had organized my menus in a particular way. After the upgrade, many of items have been moved around quite randomly. I tried to fix it using 'alacarte' but nothing is changed in that - i.e. according to 'alacarte' all my menus are in the right place. In reality, though, the upgrade process has deleted a few menu folders but not the items in them. The items are just moved to random locations. Is there a way to fix these changes these? 'alacarte' is of no use here. Is it possible to fix these using CLI? Where are the information regarding the menu organization stored?

I have a bit of a problem w/ the windowing UI when I drag any window left, the display gets messed up (see attached screen shot). It doesn't matter what the program is, even happens in explorer. I've done some searching of the Internetz and this form and all I could find was this bug, that doesn't have any updates on it:
Does anyone know of a fix for this? I can make the lines go away by triggoring a repaint (by either dragging another window on top of this one or minimizing and maximizing the problem window, but it's still a bit annoying.I'm running Fedora 14 and have ran all of the updates it prompted me to run.

Recently, I had the courage of installing Fedora 11 on my laptop while risking of trashing my Windows XP. Fortunately, the installation went fine and windows and fedora seems to be working together. But I needed to reinstall Fedora because I didn't do the partitioning right. After that the problem arises. I couldn't connect to the wlan. The first installation it was working fine. Now I can't. I select the network, enter the password and then it just says "Disconnected" or something like that then nothing else happens. So I had to reinstall it again thinking I did something wrong on the installation. But still it wasn't working. But it seems to be working when I boot from the live cd. I must have messed up my network configuration.

I recently installed Fedora 11 on my machine, the configuration of which is: Intel Core i7 920 CPU, 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM, nVidia GTX295 Graphics Card. I initially used the default kmod-nvidia driver, but with a yum update, somehow a non-PAE kernel got installed and the kmod-nvidia driver did not get installed with it during the update for some reason. So I uninstalled the PAE kernel and associated kmod drivers, and downloaded the nVidia driver from the nVidia website. It ran just fine for a few days, and then all of a sudden, after a reboot, the X Server crashed and I had to log into the text mode, run
Code: setup and do the default X configuration. Then, I re-installed kmod-nvidia, with no luck. Sorry for being so vague about this, but I finally managed to get the CUDA driver (I need to use CUDA for my project work) to work (downloaded from [URL]). But after one reboot, the same problem resurfaced.
Now, I am in X Windows with a default 800x600 configuration using a generic visa driver, on a 23" monitor I have been rebooting my computer all morning and trying various things to get the driver to work again. I would be happy to furnish any details about the installed packages I have. For now, here is some information.

I installed Fedora on a separate partition and during the install prompts forgot to uncheck the Grub installation. So, Fedora installed with Grub 1 (imagine that) although I was able to find instructions to upgrade it to Grub 2 (plus it recognized all the OS on the computer). So far so good, I don't have a preference whether Fedora's or Ubuntu's Grub is installed, however the Ubuntu Startup Splash screen is messed up, ie. a simple purple background with "Ubuntu" in system fonts. Is there a way to fix this back to the graceful default splash screen? Can I change back the Grub to be Ubuntu's?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I have a problem with images showing up as black boxes in konqueror, firefox, galeon, etc. I originally thought the problem was Firefox related, so I updated and the problem is still there.
I can't find anything with search that matched this exactly, so if I overlooked.
It seems to me that any time an image is re-sized it shows up as a black box. If I look at a wallpaper that's large, say 1200 x 800 or something, and the browser tries to resize it, it comes up black. However, if I click the same image and it returns to it's actual size, it looks perfect, as it should.
I look at a website I have to individually view each image and this is beginning to drive me crazy!
I have an Acer 5515 Laptop, with a ATI Express X1200 graphics card. I have taken a snapshot of when it happens.

I'm running fedora 11 and cisco version 4.8.01 (0640). When I connect to my work, and get authenticated, the system freezes completely. In searching it looks like at one point updating the kernel to a new version resolved this, at least for the 64bit implementation. I'm running 32bit and I'm on kernel kernel-PAE-2.6.30.8-64.fc11.i686 which is a newer version then what was listed in the other thread.

I have tries "yum remove Wine" and "yum remove wine*", but it doesn't do anything. I am using Fedora 13.

I have an older Compaq MT D220 with 2.4 GHz Celeron proc and 756 MB RAM, with F14 installed exclusively. I've yet to get Skype completely functional under these conditions. The loopback audio only test usually produces no sound or very broken sound. I tried upgrading my DSL from 3MBps max downstream and 0.5MBsp max upstream, to 6MBps max up and 1Mbps max down - to no avail!
System Monitor shows CPU and memory are below 100% utilization, and Skype's real time call stats show 0 packet loss. Perhaps using a leaner GUI than Gnome? I'm happy to report that as expected, other than this Skype issue and some lingering DVD-ROM and BackupPC issues, this old HW is much more tolerable with F14 than Windows XP!

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.
I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.
There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader
[url]
But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

/etc/udev/rules.d/20-our.rules has worked perfectly in FC6 and F10. In F11 I can't get udev to even look at it, much less execute the udev commands in it. Stat tells me that none of the relevant files have been accessed when I plug in a USB device that udevadm says was processed and which clearly matched the rules.. I reboot with several USB devices plugged in and according to stat nothing anywhere in /etc/udev was accessed during the boot process.

I am sick to the back teeth of fedora 11 Every time I try and run yum for any install at all it just keeps saying segment fault. When I have tried installing mysql it keeps coming up with the same fault yet again segment fault. I even get this stupid error when trying to install postgresql:
[Code]...
Its got nothing to do with my connection at all keeps happening at home, work when I use my vmWare server, I have a netinstall of FC10 so I am going back to that.
If anyone can help me in using a better method of making yum work, then thats brilliant but one final try and one error I am going back, this is a major rant as I am working for clients now and this just isnt suitable, if FC10 does this then I am going to a different dist like CentOS or something more robust as this is just rediculous!
