Using the rpmbuild to compile the kernel, every time the patches will be applied to the source code. So even if no changes are made to the source code and no patches are added to kernel.spec, the whole kernel will still be recompiled, wasting a lot of time
View 13 RepliesI'm having problems to compile XIllybus kernel module. As this guide explains, [URL] ..... (on the top of page 8 of 25) I unpackaged the tar.gz file and compiled the kernel module by typing the make command in the proper path. When I compile the module with make command, I get the following error:

make: *** /lib/modules/3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64/build: No such file or directory. Stop.

/lib/modules/3.16.0-0.bpo.4-amd64/build path does not exist. What does it mean? Should I have to install some kernel packet? www does not work for me.
I'm trying to set it up so that I don't have to recompile the driver for my RAID card manually every time there is a kernel upgrade.I found a thread on it, here and a help page here, and it looks like it builds the module fine, but for some reason it's not being inserted into the new kernel, or something. It's like the new kernel doesn't know it exists, even tho modprobe -l shows the newly built module exists (and is in the correct place)Here's the script that I wrote up to get the drivers set up in DKMS:

I update my last kernl to 2.6.38-rc7 but when I launch VirtualBox, on stdout.The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.38-rc7) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup.

I`ve found that old /asm/system.h was moved under architecture dedicated directory /arch/*/include/asm/system.h. Anyway during sources compilation I`m having errors related to kernel sources. I'm trying to compile a Linux kernel module called hello-2.c using the command "make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=${PWD} modules" (without the quotes) (which I found online), and the following is the (seemingly successful) output.:

Everything I am doing is within a folder/directory called "thefolder" (without the quotes) in the "/tmp" directory (without the quotes).
Why I can't see a hello-2.ko, and what to do to get it?
I am trying to figure out how to compile qcserial.c kernel module from the latest kernel source file located in the 2.6.37-rc8 kernel tree. I have installed the sources for my current kernel 2.6.35-24-generic on maverick and it seems that my includes are not in the right place to make the qcserial.c file happy.
I overcame this issue by passing the -I option to gcc that points to the directories that it is looking for. I am currently getting errors while compiling and I was wondering if it is impossible to compile qcserial.c on my current kernel? I am looking to get the diagnostic port and GPS port enabled for my built-in 3G card.
I havent built modules for quite some time and that was on opensuse with the fglrx module.
i downloaded kernel source rpm. i.e kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm for my kernel 2.6.18-53.el5. i installed succeffully above src.rpm using command .. rpmbuild --rebuild kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm it created a directory in /usr/src/redhat
then i manually deleted the redhat directory just because i want to rebuild the kernel source again.so i i removed the redhat directory but now i tried to excute above rpmbuild command again but it is failed. saying: error:cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/sources error:kernel-2.6.18-53.el5.src.rpm cannot be installed

I found this guide long time ago (i used it many times) but it use src.rpm package and the contained kernel.spec file have many lines for adding patches. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to compile a vanilla kernel that I got from git in a VirtualBox VM running Fedora 12. With RHEL (albeit on real hardware, not a VM), I am able to do a make; make modules_install; make install and simply able to boot up the kernel. The make install step, in particular, creates the initrd using /sbin/installkernel, which also updates the grub configuration.
Under Fedora 12, my new kernel does not boot. I see no messages on the screen, not even if I change the boot command line to remove quiet bootup. I see disk usage on the VM and the CPU gets pegged at 100%. Strangely enough, if I change the initrd to refer to an existing, Fedora-provided kernel, I can boot my new kernel without any problems. I started with a Fedora kernel config and used it to generate the config for my new 2.6.33 kernel, so it couldn't be the case that I missed something in the config either.
Does anybody have an idea about what could be going on? Is there some specific patch that Fedora kernels use that are essential for booting up?
Also, the guest Fedora OS is 64-bit, if that is relevant.

If i set up the toolchain on a fedora 13 machine with the exact same procedure, the cross compilation works fine. I can't figure out how this can be fixed. I am currently considering downgrading to fedora 13 due to this.
I need to install module u32 into the netfilter module for kernel 2.6.27.
I did not see the source code in the kernel version I have. where can I find the code for U32 module.
I have checked "netfilter.org" and looks like POM is discontinued. Is the u32 module committed to kernel version 2.6.27 or need to patch it. If yes, where can I find the patch?
I building the kernel for a MIPS processor.
I am compiling and installing the custom kernel based on the instructions provided in Building_a_custom_kernel on fedoraproject.org/wiki site.
However, according to the instructions, anytime I change anything in the kernel source files(e.g /driver/ata/libata-core.c), I have to create a patch a rebuild the whole kernel and install this new kernel which takes 2 hours. Is there a simpler way of recompiling what has changed(without creating patch) and try that changed kernel? Since my changes are not in the drivers which can be dynamically loaded but is in the static code of the kernel, it is making life cumbersome.Are there any instructions for this? How does other kernel developers manage this?
i tried to compile linux kernel 2.6.31 on Fedora 12: the make , make modules and modules install ran successfully but problem with make install while trying to create image it looks for mkinitrd command which is not available i downloaded and installed the mkinitrd pckg and make install was now successful i got kernel img and initrd img in /boot
also grub was updated properly but i m not able to boot up the new kernel the problem the initrd seems to be and uknown type file to fedora core and the current kernel has initramfs img with a .cpio extn instead of initrd

i was trying to install kernel 2.6.29.1 on fedora 14 but it is giving error. First download a package with kernel and i saved in home/user/linux. Afterwards i can extract this package.

Sound disappears as soon as I try to use an application e.g. News Video Fox, CNN, BBC or playing a video disk or cd disk, and a kernel module crash is reported (listed below from logs) After this happens no sound, and the desktop freezes (X11 only Linux is fine). Restarting X obviously do not solve the problem.
It seems that Fedora 12 has sever problems with Intel Sound cards.
I guess it is not really a Kernel developers problem but more the authors for the sound module causing the crash. I already reported it through the popup to "kernel-oops" by clicking on the "black screen" popup reporting the crash on FC12.
