Fedora :: Plugin USB Speakers After Boot Up To Get Sound

Jul 28, 2011

I just installed Fedora 15 and I'm liking it quite a bit but I have no sound output. My USB speakers (bose companion 5) show up in sound preferences, and I've selected them as the sound output device. And whenever an application (such as Rhythmbox) plays music, it shows up in the list of sound-outputting applications. But there's no sound.

I've checked that none of the mixers are muted (in fact all are on maximum), and my speakers are not muted either. Switched USB ports; it's working fine now. Wacky. Something about order of initialization? I plugged my mouse into the "offending" USB port and it works fine too. OK, I get it, it's not about the USB port. I have to plug in my speakers AFTER Fedora boots. That's kind of annoying but bearable.

I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop. When I plug my headphones, they sometimes work, they sometimes don't, but that's not the main problem. When they do work, sound also plays out of the speakers. The only solutions I was able to find were for earlier versions, which don't work for 11.04.

I booted it up with an Ubuntu live CD just to make sure it was the hardware, and I get the same results.

General :: Buzzing Sound From Speakers ONLY When No Sound Is Playing Ubuntu

This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.

Fedora Hardware :: Toshiba Satellite L650-18X - Sound Scomes From On Board Speakers And Not From Connected Headphones

Nov 12, 2010

I installed Fedora 14 on a Toshiba Satellite L650-18X laptop. The on board speakers work fine but when I try to connect external headphones, the sound still comes from the on board speakers and not from the connected headphones. Also the microphone jack doesn't work.

As I searched the web for possible solutions I think the problem is related to the Alsa sound driver. I kindly ask if someone with experience could share details regarding the Alsa configuration for this particular sound driver in Fedora 14 in order to solve this issue.

For users whom wish to install the wireless driver on the Toshiba Satellite L650-18X, Broadcom offers great information on it's official site

Fedora Installation :: 11 Live CD Won't Detect Keyboard Or Mouse And Speakers During Boot

Sep 12, 2009

I am running Vista on my C: drive and I just got Fedora 11. I planned to dual boot Vista and fedora 11. I Downloaded the Live CD from the site (680 +- MB) and burned the files IN the .iso file to an empty DVD and CD. Shrank my D: drive and now have about 27 GiB wort of unpartitioned space. I booted from the Live CD. everything went OK until i chose Boot from the Boot Menu that came up. First it took me to a screen with the following message:

ACPI: expecting a [reference] package element found type 5. and then in went on to boot normally. Then when it reached the user login screen, I found that my mouse and keyboard were'nt responding and that there was no lights on any of the keys. I checked the USB cables and did a hard shutdown and booted from the Live CD again, but the problem persists.

OpenSUSE :: No Sound From Speakers / Get That?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm running openSUSE 11.1, KDE 3.5.10. I used to get system sounds (like startup etc) and I could get sounds from Amarok when I played .mp3 files.

However, yesterday my Amarok crashed and I could not get any sound from Amarok (I was using gstreamer/auaup engine, didn't have any other engine). But I could still hear the system sounds like shutdown, startup etc.

So I was playing around with KMix and alsamixer settings. I don't have root access on the computer so I can't change any configuration files or anything. Just changed the volume controls etc. But now I can't get any system sounds.

I ran speaker-test and no sound there either. All my mixer volume controls are on max but I can't remember exactly what I changed on KMix. I'm thinking I messed up the switches some how.

Sound works through headphones but not through speakers. After trying for hours googling and different snd-hda-intel options in the /etc/modprobe. d/ alsa-base.conf file with no success I decided to reload deb. There is probably some snd-hda-intel option I havent tried yet to get what I need on this machine, or perhaps I'm just missing something all together. As stated sound works through headphone jack. I've gone into the system settings and there is no "speaker" or similar output device to select. I found many people report with the C210 that using Code: Select alloptions snd-hda-intel model=generic worked for them, but has not worked for me.

Current alsa-base.conf file reads (after format/reload)

Code: Select all# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2

Ubuntu :: Sound Comes Out Both Speakers AND Headphones?

I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with a Realtek HD sound card. When I plug headphones in, the sound comes out of the headphones AND the built-in speakers, instead of the speakers muting as they should.

This happens on both the live CD and the installed OS which i'm running. I've tried every fix I can find on the Internet, including a setting changed in the text-mode ALSA Mixer, installing a package from synaptic, and other fixes for older versions of Ubuntu that can't be done on 10.04.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PC Speakers - No Sound On TV

Oct 20, 2010

Before I upgraded to 10.10, I would hear sound on both my PC speakers and on my TV. The speakers are connected via the standard speaker out, the TV was connected via the line-out, through a stereo to RCA adapter. Video is supplied to the TV via HDMI. Now that I've upgraded to Maverick, however, I no longer get sound on the TV. This isn't the usual "sound stopped working completely on upgrade" issue, because I get flawless sound via the PC speakers just as before. I've tried most of the debugging steps recommended in other threads about audio, with no improvement.

The weird thing about all this is, when I plug other speakers or headphones into the same port, I hear audio. So I'm starting to suspect that the problem has to do with the HDMI audio out capability on my video card (an nvidia GT 240), which might have suddenly come alive (if not fully functional) with Maverick's new version of ALSA. I don't know what signal(s) my TV thinks it's getting and have no way of troubleshooting things on that side, but it seems possible that the HDMI it's getting video through is also sending a null/silent audio stream, and that stomps the analog audio signal it's getting from my sound card.

I see two output devices in Sound Preferences, "Internal Audio" and "High Definition Audio Controller". "Internal Audio", ie my onboard sound, is what's producing audio via the speakers. HDMI has never produced any audio, and I don't really need it to if I can just make it work the way it did before. I've tried completely disabling that device, even adding the "snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi" module to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist - no change.

The solution for this could be one of two things: one, I could try to get the HDMI audio out working and let that be what my TV receives, two I try to make the audio setup work as before, with analog audio going to both speakers and TV. Thoughts? I'm leaning towards the latter, ie not bothering with the HDMI audio, as having another audio source would probably mean messing with PulseAudio which has otherwise worked 100% fine for me up until now. If need be I can supply more details on hardware, CLI output etc.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound From USB Speakers / Get That?

Jun 9, 2011

My headset is doing a fine job, using the standard audio connections, but I'd like to be able to use speakers as well. Someone's given me a very basic "soundball" ‒ only visible identification, the word 'goobay' ‒ that's been doing well on another O/S. When I plug it in, it's on speaking terms with the USB port as far as drawing power goes: but doesn't play anything.

The options from Sound preferences don't include anything as obvious as "use USB port/ use audio connectors". Is there an easy answer?
