Fedora :: GRUB Version 0.97 Is Corrupting Ntfs Partition

Mar 4, 2010

Maybe some experts have a deeper knowledge what's going on? Seems GNU GRUB version 0.97 is corrupting ntfs partition if installed on it on my 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64

[Code]...

How I have achieved this: Upgraded (in fact installed on the same partition without reformatting) W7 32 (RC-7100) to W7 64 enterprise. It has nuked grub (used to boot FC-12) and silently removed a small boot (or windows backup) partition so ntfs became sda3 instead of sda4. Booting from fedora dvd causes the sequence listed above.

The main problem here is that grub doesn't boot windows: there was "unknown filesystem" error. After fixing boot record with "testdisk" I get: "booting windows in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... booting windows in 3 ... 2.. forever" If I use W7 repair disk it fixes windows and nukes grub away (ntfs partition has to be active for that otherwise the smart soft can't find it). So, making sda1 active and placing grub there is not an option...

General :: Seagate Momentus XT Corrupting Files ?

Jul 19, 2011

My Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive is corrupting files on Linux. I would appreciate help from anyone, but I'd particularly like to know if other Momentus XT users are able to reproduce this problem;I have provided step-by-step instructions for reproducing this issue on the Seagate Community Forums. So far, four users have reproduced this problem on the following laptops and OS/distributions:

Five laptops: Lenovo Thinkpad T60, T61, T510, MSI MS-1656-ID1, and MacBook Pro (15" late 2009).
Four OS/distributions: Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15, openSUSE, and Mac OS X.

The instructions for reproducing the problem are simple. Here is a brief verbal description: Create a large test file, save it to another storage device (not the Momentus XT), and compute the SHA-1 checksum.Write the test file to the Momentus XT.Read the test file from the Momentus XT, calculate the SHA-1, and compare this checksum with the checksum of the original. We should have a match. We have probably reproduced the problem if they don't match. (Only 'probably', because it is possible for other issues to cause a mismatch. See the Seagate thread about identifying this specific problem by comparing the files with cmp -l.)Repeat from step (2).The Seagate thread has more details. Here are some notes from my testing (I have been able to reproduce this problem on three consecutive Momentus XT drives; I RMA'd twice and am now on the third one):

What seems to be happening is that the Momentus XT sometimes neglects to write data to the drive, so that when I read from the drive, I get what was originally on the sector, and not the correct data. This occurs in blocks of different sizes; typical sizes are 1 MiB and 512 KiB.Problem occurs on ext2, ext4, Btrfs, NTFS, and FAT32. Strangely, I was not able to reproduce this problem on ext3.Writing with the oflag=direct output flag in dd avoids this problem. Rapidly commiting data to disk with while true; do sync; sleep 0.01; done also prevents the problem.

I have only been able to reproduce this problem through a SATA and an eSATA interface. A USB connection seems to prevent the problem. (Not sure if this is due to transfer speed.)problems occur more often with large files (>2 GB). I was not able to produce problems with files smaller than about 85 MB.I was not able to reproduce the problem on Windows XP with NTFS.Gazoi at the Seagate forums was unable to reproduce the problem on FreeBSD 8.2 with UFS2.The Momentus XT passes both the extended SMART test and badblocks -w with no issues. My laptop (MS-1656-ID1) has successfully passed through 24 hours each of Memtest86+, Memtest86, memtester, and MPrime.I have tested two other storage devices (a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 and an Intel 320 series SSD) with the same procedure, and they both pass with no issues.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 On NT330i Corrupting Http Data?

Oct 31, 2010

I've got a Netbox NT330i [URL]

Ubuntu 10.04 (server) installed with a few minor issues, but is generally in fine shape.

I installed apache2 and the whole lamp stack ready to do some Drupal work.

I noticed a logo.png wasn't loading. Apache logs thought it was serving it fine (200 responses)

It wasn't displaying because it was being corrupted.

I hunted for some reason, stripped back apache2, removed it, installed it bare.
Same problem.

I tried nginx. Same problem.

I've compared pdfs transfered from the webservers and I can see it every-so-often clumps of corrupt data.

Also, wget on the same box gets the files without corruption.

SSH works fine. No corruption. But medium size SFTP transfers can take a while - I presume because it's having to resend corrupted data until the checksums add up.

I then tried using wlan0, which seems to work fine, so it's just the ethernet port corrupting data.

From lspci, the eth0 is an AR8131 rev c0

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Loader Corrupting Windows MBR

Oct 23, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on a Compaq CQ60 laptop on a 60 gig partition with a 3 gig swap partition. I'm running windows 7 64bit ultimate on the main partition. I installed off a live disc and Ubuntu works and runs great(except for wifi >.<).

My problem is ever since I installed Ubuntu Windows wont load every time. About half the time I select Windows 7 in the boot loader and it pulls up the windows screen with the stupid little flag, and then resets itself.

There where no problems with Windows 7 prior to the install. I've read that if you didn't reset your computer after shrinking your drive in windows it will cause problems later. But I did that so I cant think of any other explanation for why it would continually crash. Has anybody else had this issue, is this something that might be repaired by removing Ubuntu and the partition and reinstalling it?

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Avoid Windows MBR From Overwriting And Corrupting Grub

Jul 18, 2011

I had opensuse/winxp running.

First windows xp wouldn't boot - then opensuse **** out and I had nothing but a black screen. I spent about two days trying to figure out what in god's name happened. I finally got a copy of winxp recovery disk and it couldn't find the partition that windows was on. That gave me some idea of what was going on. So I tried to fix the matter from partitionmagic. I reinstalled grub making sure that everything was associated properly. I still couldn't get either opensuse or windows to boot after many many different trial and error attempts.

After deciding there was no help for it. I decided to slave my hard drive and wipe to start over. So I booted partition magic from USB and deleted my opensuse partition and -what do you know - windows booted right up. Aside from feeling windows xp's smug grin as the logo appeared - i am perplexed as to how this happened. My guess is that MBR tried to overwrite grub. But I think that the loader was confused and trying to boot from the wrong partition.

I want to reinstall opensuse again. However I want to make sure that this doesn't happen. I need my xp partition for examsoft because wine doesn't seem to work for it and I can't vbox it. So is there some way to make sure that when I do install from DVD on my USB that:

1) repositories are correct
2) MBR doesn't overwrite grub (should I install Grub2 or LILO?)

General :: Meerkat Install Corrupting Win7 Partition Wifi Drivers?

Dec 28, 2010

I've had an annoying couple of days beginning with a win7 reinstall on a dual boot system (win7/10.10) that wiped out grub. I reinstalled ubuntu (10.04) in the hopes of just getting grub2 back up, but that failed and I ended up with a new install of 10.04 on the partition and a happily functioning and coexisting win7/ubuntu wit grub working the way that I wanted.

However, I'm traveling, and tried to reinstall the wifi drivers manually. I think I messed something up and installed the 10.10 drivers onto the 10.04 system (I only had a 10.04 disk and the pendrive usb method failed). Anyway, when I tried to (re)install the drivers from the cd, I got the error: a later driver has already been installed. However, the problem at hand is as follows: now my win7 install doesn't see any of the wireless networks around. So, I think I somehow fraked the wifi card.

Fedora :: Restoring Grub After Reinstalling Windows?

Aug 4, 2010

My Windows installation had a problem and I had to reinstall Windows. The problem now is that I need to get grub back so that I can boot into Fedora. I'm using a Fedora 11 LiveCD I had sitting around. Here are the results of the command most of the way down the first page:

Quote:

Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 32301 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000f09ab

[Code].....

I'm tempted to try the grub-install command quoted near the end of the thread, but I don't want to do anything that will hose the system.

Fedora Installation :: Reinstalling FC 10 On A Dual Boot Ubuntu - Machine ?

Mar 13, 2009

I'm trying to reinstall FC10 after a foolish mistake I've done that costed me operation of my Fedora partition (uninstalling SELinuxpolicycoreutils).

I have a dual boot Ubuntu - FC 10 machine and delete my old fedora partition with GParted. However when I try to install FC 10 from the live CD using the option "Use free space on selected drives and create default layout" I get the error message:

Could not allocate requested partitions:

Partitioning failed:

The following errors occurred with your partitioning:

You have not defined a root partition (/), which is required for installation of Fedora to continue.

This can happen if there is not enough space on your hard drive(s) for the installation.

Press 'OK' to choose a different partitioning option.

This is the output of fdisk -l :

Partition table entries are not in disk order

My last option is erase everything from my drive including the Ubuntu partition and start over the installation, something that I would like to avoid.

Fedora Networking :: How To Setup The Squeezeboxserver

Jul 21, 2011

I want to play around with squeezebox on my laptop. But I am experiencing some complications. My system: Linux lunatech 2.6.38.8-35.fc15.i686 #1 SMP Wed Jul 6 14:46:26 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Squeezebox ver: 7.5.5-1 Here is what I did:

Installed the repo:

Code:

#rpm -Uvh http://repos.slimdevices.com/yum/squeezecenter/squeezecenter-repo-1-6.noarch.rpm
Installed the server

Code:

#yum install squeezeboxserver

Started the server

Code:

#service squeezeboxserver start
Starting squeezeboxserver (via systemctl): [ OK ]

So far so good...When i try to access the web ui using firefox [URL] it wont find it. I tried typing in my hostname and my ip address as well but with the same result. I read in this thread that selinux might be blocking the port, so I added the recommended rule

Code:

#semanage port -a -t http_port_t -p tcp 9000

But it still doesn't work...

I tried nmap

Code:

#nmap -p 1-9001 my.ip.address but it said that all ports where closed. So i started the mysqld service and ran nmap again to verify that my firewall settings doesn't get in the way. It then showed that port 3306 was open.
