Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection, No Internet?
Jun 10, 2011
Finally I thought I solved my problem with the help of Dmizer. My networkcard wasn't functioning correctly due to the hardware switch on my laptop. For more information about this check this thread: [URL]
Now I have a new problem, probably caused by the problem above. I have a connection (so the network manager says) but no internet. I checked the network settings by using the ifconfig command in a terminal. This tells me that I have an address of 10.43.42.2 (or similar) which should be something like this 192.168.x.x.
I had already tried to use a command like "ifconfig release" but this didn't work. I know too much windows like but i had to try something. I also had the connection properties checked and changed to my network settings. After i did this I had still the same address (10.43.42.2 or similar).
Unless someone knows what is going on I'd like to know how to refresh of renew my IP address from the DHCP server.
Some information about my hardware and drivers:
NIC vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.
NIC chipset: AR2413 (i guess, i do not have my laptop with me at the time of writing)
Old driver: ath5k
New driver: ath_pci (installed from madwifi)
I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.
Its a case of ".... wireless network connection active but still not internet connection .."I am using WEP - 128 key ... Works when I connect directly using ethernet cable ... but not wireless (pci and wireless router)
I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
I'm using 10.04 I tried to connect to a free WiFi connection. I had the password for it too. I had been able to access the connection 2 weeks ago with no real trouble. Now, the thing at the top of my screen indicates I'm connected BUT I can't get Firefox to access any sites. I can't download email using Thunderbird. Pretty strange isn't it?
I have no wireless internet on my 11.04. I can access my wired connection but my wireless doesn't show connections and isnt able to connect to any wireless network in the neighbourhood. (I had this probz too in 9.10 and 10.04) But none of the solutions work now. I already tried to blacklist the blacklist at76c50x_usb

I've been using this network forever With windows and I can't figure out how to connect to it now with ubuntu...I have a build-in wireless card and I know the name/password of the connection, but my computer cannot seem to locate it. I've looked through guides and none of them work..
I'm using a WUSB54GC network adapter to connect to my home wireless network. My network was not visible, so I added it and it shows connected, but when I launch the browser, I can't get a connection. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4. All other computers on the network connect fine and I disabled my firewall to see if that made a difference.
i just installed the 10.0.4 version. My problem is that I cant connect to the internet. When I add a new wireless connection, it says that its connected but i cant ping the router or connect to any websites. It keeps auto assigning me with a 10.42.43.1 ip which doesn't make any since because my router's is nowhere close to that.
I have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 . Need to get my wireless router working on my HP laptop. Have been using a Linksys WRT54G Router with windows and it is working properly. Tried setting up in NetworkManager but it does not work.
When looking at things in the Ubuntu terminal it says the network is DISABLED.
I had been happily using a wireless connection for about two weeks. The connection then went down for a few days. Since it came back up, I can connect to the network, but cannot access the internet. Other users of the network can both connect to the network, and access the internet, though people have experienced the same problem as me the last time the network went down (they could connect to the network but not access the internet). I have tried deleting and re-starting the connection, to no avail. I have looked around the forums, but haven't found anything that can help: do any of you have any suggestions? I am malarial and at the end of tether. It is not a problem with Ipv6, which is set to ignore, as it was in the past when the connection workedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an X61 Thinkpad. Below is the output of iwconfig, route -n, lspci, and what happens when I ping other network
Iwconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1d:72:9e:09:8f UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
We just set up a password for our wireless router (D-link DIR-615). WPA personal. After doing that, I can no longer connect to the internet. I can connect to the wireless router, however. Same problem for the Apple Macs in the house. We called Dlink. The fix for a Mac was to add DNS servers (4.2.2.2) under TCP/IP But there doesn't seem to be anywhere to specify a DNS server in Ubuntu.
With Encrypted Wireless Connection Not Able to Access Internet - no pings, internet browsing, etc. However, without encryption I am able to browse the internet. I need encryption ..
I am pasting diagnostics collected by shell procedure collectNWdata.sh..
Code: collectNWData.sh V0.6.2.0 (Rev: 1.193, Build: 2010/01/20 21:22:30 UTC) --- Which type of your network connection should be tested? --- (2) Wireless connection (WLAN) --- What's the type of networktopology?
Earlier today I decided I wanted to switch back over to ubuntu, my internet was working fine, but as soon as i reformatted to Linux my modem stopped showing any lights under ADSL - TX and RX. and I can't connect to my wireless connection anymore. What should I doooooooo
I dont know how to install backports! I have tried everything to get my usb adapter to connect but it still dosent recognize my home network! How do I install backports and headers? (ubuntu 10.04 amd 64) [URL]
I have windows 7 dual-booted with ubuntu. Im having issues with ubuntu however and i am very new to using linux (sorry). When i intalled ubuntu and ran on it a seperate partition everything seemed to work fine until i tried connecting to the wireless internet in my university. This is what's driving me crazy. When i first turn ubuntu on it connects normally to the internet, and i can usually get onto google for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the wireless loses its connection and the internet shuts off, even though it can still detect the wifi in the area. I try to reconnect but it consistently fails... I also get some sort of .local avashi error message (dont remember what it said exactly) for a brief moment and then it fades away. Can someone tell me what to do? This is driving me crazy. btw, i have a realtek rtl8191 wlan nic driver installed on windows, so im assuming thats the driver installed on linux to. Do i need to install a different version like kubuntu or xubuntu?
For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes - I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed - When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least - I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I am trying to establish an adhoc connection in my ubuntu 10.10 and share my cable internet throughout this connection with my Android phone. I have read some guides but I couldn't be successful. (I have another windows mobile, and it couldn't connect too). I have installed Firestarter in order to enable internet sharing. My main Problem is that, no one can obtain IP adress from the adhoc connection, whether Firestarter is active or not. What should I do in order to make the other devices gain IP address from this connection. If I have to set static IP what should I do exactly?
I have a netgear wireless system and it is problematic with Linux. I need to use a static IP or will loose connection. It is also problematic with an itouch and a kindle. I just bought my wife a kindle and need to get it to work. It there a way to run two home wireless systems from one Internet connection? I have a wireless router supplied by surewest but my wireless Cannon printer did not seem to like that.
I had Fedora 7 which works fine with my PCI card Linksys WMP54G-EU (00:0b.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)).
It ran with ndiswrapper.1.51.
Yesterday I installed the live-CD Fedora 10 on a new partition in another hard drive and so I have Fedora 10 but WITHOUT Internet connection.
I tried to install Ndiswrapper but the 'make' command doesn't exist in my Fedora 10 !
What are all the things I need to download from Internet to ensure the several commands like 'make uninstall', 'make', 'make install'... and to ensure installing Ndiswrapper ?
As of now, my internet works fine when connected with an ethernet cable. The problem is it doesnt seem like my wireless is working at all.The led light is orange, (its usually blue when it connects) and I cannot see my home dsl network. Is thereany specific troubleshooting steps I should take?HP dv6000 laptopwireless card: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN
I have just installed Linux Mint 8 to an Asus A6000. My problem is that the computer won't connect with my wireless router. I have tried with MAC-adress and such, but still no respons. I also tried to connect with a cable to my modem, but no response there either.
I think I may lack some drivers, to what I think is Broadcom b43, but I am not sure. I tried to download the drivers on my other computer, and transfered them to the Asus. I managed to install 2/4 drivers, but on the two others, I get this message "Failed to fetch ... Couldn't reach archive.ubuntu.com"
This is not the common problem that's on the stickied thread. I'm able to connect to my wireless network perfectly. I switch between Windows to game and Linux for desktop, coding, and hosting, so I can tell it has something to do with ubuntu 10.10. When I'm connected to my wireless network, at random times, my internet begins to slowdown, then I get disconnected from the internet, but the taskbar says I'm connected. This problem only happens in ubuntu and not Windows for some strange reason.
The applications that are usually open do not cause it, because it still does it even though I have little applications open (Google Chrome, gedit). When I'm on Teamspeak 3, I notice my ping rises to the 1000s randomly, and I get disconnected. Once again that only happens on Ubuntu.
I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
I don't have a wired connection to internet. I have only a wifi connection. Is there any I could download a driver and install or myself in fedora 14??
