Networking :: Split Lets Say Wlan In Two In Same OS To Get Different IP Address?
May 14, 2011Is it possible to split a NIC into two lets say.I've seen how in virtual box you set an option (I don't remember which one) that the guest OS uses the same NIC (virtualized?) and gets an IP assigned from the router. For example the host connects to the router using wlan0 and recieves IP 192.168.1.2 then the guest uses the same NIC wlan0 (i think correct me if I'm wrong thats why I ask) and gets 192.168.1.3
My question is: Is it possible to split lets say wlan0 in two in the same OS to get different IP address?and if it is. Can you connect to two different SSID with the same NIC using wpa_supplicant?
Ubuntu Networking :: Ipv6 Global Address When Changing WLAN?
Jun 23, 2011I've two WLAN AP's with both a different IPv6 subnet. When I change from one AP to the other, my IPv6 Global address stays valid and so is the default IPv6 gateway. After a while I get another Global address from the second AP's subnet and another default IPv6 gateway for the second subnet. Both have the same metric. IPv6 connectivity is broken now. When I disable wireless on the laptop and reenable it, it flushes all IP addresses and receives new ones and connectivity is restored. Does anyone know if this is normal behaviour or should it normaly flush all the addresses when changing network? It's a bit silly to have to disable/enable wireless all the time..

Sep 9, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 using an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. My laptop's ability to connect to a wireless network stopped last night, and I'm not sure why. It's definitely something on my end, as my roommate can connect to the internet on a Windows box. I can wire in without a problem, but that's a pain and my Ethernet cable got lost in the shuffle when I moved back to school. I've been able to get into this network before and nothing about it has changed. I've been able to hibernate and restart and such and nothing has ever needed to be reset.
The router's a D-Link WBR-2310. Wicd and Network Manager see the network (I'm back to using wicd) , but wicd appears to get stuck at "Obtaining IP address..." and says "Unable to connect: Cannot obtain IP address". I know my password is correct (I set up the router and I'm the CS undergrad in the apartment so I manage it), lspci sees the wireless card, ifconfig and iwconfig return information about the interface, dmesg|grep wlan0 doesn't seem to have anything terribly out of the ordinary, but here's that output:

I've tried:
- reinstalling wicd
- uninstalling wicd and installing network-manager
- restarting
- shutting down and booting back up
- restarting the router
- sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
- taking the interface down and back up with ifconfig
I haven't changed anything recently in regards to my wireless card, and all the fixes I've tried are things I've done before without an issue. The only thing I'm wondering about is if doing a hard reset might have broken something (I know this is a cardinal sin, but there's a whole 'nother problem I haven't been able to fix with the OS hanging every once in a while over a VPN daemon when it tries to shut down or restart -- I've left it for hours to see if it actually gets anywhere and no luck, won't do a soft reset). I'm nervous about reinstalling the driver just because I've never had to do it and drivers are a finicky business. I imagine there's a config error somewhere?

Feb 17, 2009Some people may need to change the mac address of their ethernet network cards. This can be easily done with fedora with command line. Just follow the steps below:
1. Log as root on a textual console (ctrl+F2) or through "su -" command in your console
2. Print your network configuration with ifconfig

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:23:8B:6A:7E:9E

Here, eth0 is the ethernet interface of your system. The mac address is put in red.
3. Change your mac address using the following syntax
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00:18:8BA:7E:90
The new value (in green) must be hexadecimal
4. if you have a dhcp server that distributes the adresses automatically, then request a new adress for your eth0 interface
[root@localhost ~]# dhclient eth0
5. Now, your interface is up and have a new mac and IP addresses. This feature may be useful if the network administrator ban you according to the mac adress, for example .........

Fedora Networking :: Change IP Address In KDE?
Mar 26, 2011I've just reinstalled F14 with KDE rather than Gnome and I'm finding that I'm unable to assign a static IP address to my wired connection.
KDE automatically connects via DHCP, but when I go into KDE's network manager, the eth0 connection isn't listed. In fact, no wired connection is listed. If I manually add one with the correct settings (including a static IP), it switches back to DHCP upon rebooting.
How can I get around this? Should I install the networkmanager-gnome package?

Apr 11, 2010I have followed some instructions to change to a static ip address and have now lost my connection to my router. The mistake I made was not copying the original "interfaces" file before making changes.The file originally had: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet (something - I thought it was loopback but didn't work when I added it).
The instruction told me to put:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
Which I did, using my own ip numbers, except for "broadcast". I didn't add that in because I didn't have a clue what to put there. When it didn't work, I tried putting it back to what I originally had except I can't rememebr that last bit. I added dhcp instead of what I thought it was but this didn't work either.

Apr 16, 2010Now I'm not too clued up about networking and IP addresses. However, I know that I have an IP address for my router (which is dynamic) and then all of my machines have internal address e.g.
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3
etc...
My server, had the internal address of 192.168.0.4 but now has changed to 192.168.0.7 what causes this to happen? I have to change my port forwarding on my router to allow access to my server from outside my network.

Jun 10, 2010My laptop has an internal Broadcom wireless adaptor. It works fine for basic Internet access, but I cannot change the MAC address with ifconfig. I would like to be able to change my MAC address. Since this is a laptop, the only option for me to do this is a USB wireless adaptor. But compatibility is very hit-or-miss. I've already tried two USB adaptors that had been stated to be compatible with Linux, and while both worked for basic functionality, neither allowed me to change the MAC address.
For whatever reason, this information seems very, very difficult to find. I have spent upwards of ten hours cumulatively searching forums (including this one) and other resources, and have found only vague, outdated, or outright false information regarding USB adaptors that support this. I believe I will be doing a great service to other users like myself by getting this question directly and conclusively answered for once, and the more responses, the better.
Questions:
Do you have (or know of) a USB wireless adaptor that actually allows you to change the MAC address?
If so, what is the specific brand and model number, and what steps were necessary to install the drivers?

Jan 16, 2010Can't change from dhcp to static ip address.I've installed Oracle's version of Linux Redhat 5, but I'm having no success changing from dhcp to a static IP address. My machine is plugged directly into a Belkin router which has the IP address: 192.168.2.1.If I use the gui: /usr/bin/system-config-network and set the network device to dhcp,it works fine. But if I set the IP address manually, I get no internet traffic, and if I ping an internet website, "network unreachable".The installation instructions for Oracle say that they want a full domainname. I've tried gateway.2wire.net. This worked in the last place I did a successful installation.It was the address of my ATT router. If I plunked that into a browser, I got the router configuration.

Jul 29, 2011change my WLAN0 MAC address in my Kubuntu Natty 64 bit at every boot. I have done quite a bit of searching and found some procedures that appear to have worked back in 9.04 and before days but I have been unable to get anything to work for me in my 11.04 install. I have tried adding a script to if.pre-up.d and also tried adding a bootmisc.sh and either I did them wrong or they are not working. I want to make sure that every time I bring the wireless up in Kubuntu that I have the changed MAC address. I usually keep wireless disabled and turn it on just when I need it.
Background so you don't think I am doing something nefarious... I am going on a cruise soon. The cruise line sells wireless internet subscriptions for the duration of the cruise but they tie it to a MAC address. I am bringing my CDMA android phone that unless I use VOIP will be unable to call at all or at least with very high charges. But I also want to be able to browse the internet with my laptop. I figure it will be easier to spoof my phones MAC with the PC than the other way around. I just need to turn one device off if I am using the other. I need the MAC address to be semi permanent so I don't turn it on by mistake and have forgotten to change the MAC.

Since I did the fresh install, my wireless network runs really really slow, i.e. a few KBs every 30 seconds whereas it ran at full speed in F13. I couldn't find the reason for it. I now tried the live-CD for Fedora 14 and it runs at full speed out of the box (whereas F15 is slow even with all updates installed).

Nov 22, 2009I have a dual-boot laptop where both are configured as clients for bacula (backup software). Since it is a laptop and it gets used outside the network where the backup is done, I can't just assign a static IP and be done; it really needs to accept an address via DHCP.

But if you do this manually, then you'll need to restart your connection. I don't want to do that, I want the laptop to just come up with the correct address in the first place because one day I will forget to change it and the backup system will be very confused (and I will be very sad when I find myself needing that backup).
The solution is to run an init script prior to starting the network. Below is the script I am using, with someone marginal comments. It is based on the network script in /etc/rc.d/init.d, heavily edited. You will need to add one parameter to your ifcfg-ethX configuration file to set the desired MAC address. That parameter MACADDR does not seem to be used by any of the init scripts. You will find it in some of the scripts in network-scripts, but it is not used as an input parameter, but rather set by querying the NIC, thus this use does not conflict.

Mar 5, 2009I have been using FC10, it works well with wlan for sometime and goes inactive after some time and hence network goes unavailable. Even after few attempts to reconnect doesn't help. Rebooting helps in bringing it back temporarily.
