from time to time, wireless connection gets very slow, and i have to make it reconnect, and some times, restart fedora. The wireless card has an Atheros AR5212 802.11abg NIC (rev 01). This happens mostly when i use Tucan Downloader, or Torrent, meaning, heavy internet use.
View 3 RepliesI've got a home firewall setup running CentOs 5.2. It's got two wired interfaces: inside and out and I'm successfully using iptables to filter and nat traffic in and out as expected. Recently I've added an AirLink101 AWLH4030 wireless nic that is recognized as the AR5212/AR5213 chipset. It appears that I have everything configured properly and I've eradicated every error encountered so far. Currently, I have my ath0 interface up and essid set but am unable to connect or even see the AP from my laptop. Here is a metric shit ton of debug/output for any networking gurus to ponder over:

I just installed CentOS and I am trying to configure the network card on the IBM Thinkpad laptop. According to this doc about wireless setup (http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/Wireless), I tried to load the ath5k module but I get "ath5k not found". Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

The Network card sees the Wireless network, but will not connect to the router. I have tried with and without security, and neither setting makes any difference. Using the Wired Network adapter does work when set to a STATIC IP.
No shared files/folders/drives and printers vanish. Most of the time re-booting will be the answer, but not this time I have 3 Ubuntu machines networked with two XP machines. one hard wired and two wireless on the 10.04. ONE wireless is networked right now and can see the other Ubuntu machines and the Windows machines and the printer. The other two are blind as a bat The two XP boxes one hard wired one wireless .. see each other. But see nothing on the Ubuntu machines that are down. Would like to fix this issue PERMANENTLY and quit screwing with it every couple of weeks Tried re-installing everything green in Samba and that did nothing. follow up edit managed to get the printers system back up on all on the net just by re-booting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 11 on an Acer Aspire 5516 and everything works except my networking interface card. In Windows XP it is listed as an "Atheros Ar8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller" and it works. In Fedora 11 it is listed as "Attansic Technology Crop. unknown (OX1062)" and does not work. I have tried the default driver "ath5k" and also downloaded madwifi and modprobed "ath-pci" but I still get the same problem. What is weird is that the wireless does work. Is this chip not supported yet in Linux?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm just having a bit of trouble with activating my wireless card (see title for details). rfkill - I installed it but nothing was soft / hard blocked (whatever they mean). I did the rfkill unblock command anyway but it didn't appear to change anything Tried doing it manually through system-config-network but this yielded no luck either. Basically all it does is continually ask for my WEP key, even though I've typed it in correctly a million times. why I don't have WPA2 because I do not have the ability to change it

I just figured out that a lot of VAIO users (so am I) were in the same situation, and solved their problem by downloading ath9k drivers from linuxwireless.org. Fine, I did it! That's what I found :

This morning I installed Fedora 14 on my laptop. During the setup, I was able to configure the wireless connection and use it to install additional software from the FreshRPMs and Livna repos. When the install was completed, I was surprised to find the wireless not working. When I click on the NetworkManager icon at the bottom right corner, I see "Wireless Networks" Under that it says "device not ready" and it is greyed out so it cannot be click on.

if I reboot the computer, I get the grub menu and am able to choose between Win7 and Fc15. A couple of times during installation the screen flashed black and diplayed a message for a brief second. I can't read that fast but it says something like "DRM nouveau- unknown or unsupported chipset" and one more line that I can't catch. When this happens, I see the pre-login loading screen, the one that shows an icon of a hard drive, network, and so on as each resource is secured. I can log back in, but this starts a new session- it doesn't remember what I was doing. I had to redo the install and setup several times because of this.
I can log in and so on normally, but the black screen and message will appear at random, forcing me to start all over, which is really frustrating. what's going on? Is it the video card? How do I install a driver for it? Also, the hard drive in question has been through a lot. could it have a bad sector or something? Windows didn't even want to "see" it, that's why Fedora is installed on there.

I have been running FC8 on this IBM T23 with a D-Link wireless adapter. Using MadWifi this has worked fine with Network Manager disabled. But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. Network Manager recognizes my router and all my neighbor's routers, but I can't connect.

I'm having stability problems with opensuse 11.3. On three occasions when you login the system is rebooted. Also blocked the entire system three times. This happens shortly after starting and running amule, but not if due to this application. Use kde 4.5, these problems are happening in the last week.

Problem is I have no idea what I'm doing setting it up. Can anyone explain this to a total novice? Or have anything else that will get it to work?
Just upgraded to 10.04 on Wed and noticed an instability. It's intermittent, so can not tell you what triggers it, but when it kicks off a commandline screen comes up, with a command pointing to some battery monitor software, and I have a desktop, so no battery and wonder why my machine has a battery monitoring software, when none should be installed. Anyway the screen stays up momentarily, then the system tries to go into something like a screen saver and I get all garbage on the screen, loose all ability to control and have to perform a hard reboot to recover from this.

The problem is, many programs just crashes, after they started, or after a quit short while. Affected are Firefox, Thunderbird, Krusader, Amarok, Konsole, and many other programs. The second problem is, if I downloaded a bzip2 archive, it is corrupt. I downloaded many archives, from other mirrors, and all corrupt. I had installed, the Multilib-packages, thought they would be the reason for the problems, and installed the standard packages of glibc and gcc. No changes. Then I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.33.4, to 2.6.35.6. (Compiled it myself) Nothing better.

I spent days trying to figure out how to get my atheros AR928x 802.11n wireless card to work in Ubuntu. The card worked perfect in Windows 7 but the connection kept dropping in Ubuntu. It would find my router and connect with 60% signal for about 5 seconds, then fall down to about 25% signal and then cut out altogether. After searching for days to find a solution, I finally figured it out and figured Id post it here to let everyone else in the same boat have a working wireless too!
I found this solution from:[URL].. This solution is for JAUNTY (Ubuntu 9.04), so if you are running Jaunty, you can just follow that post. If you are using Karmic (Ubuntu 9.1), you can follow this tutorial I'm posting. It's pretty simple: First, make sure you got all your files up to date. Type in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update Let that run, and once its done, type into terminal:
sudo apt-get upgrade
Once that finished, restart your computer. Again open up terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic
If you are using Jaunty, instead of karmic type in jaunty, if you use another version of ubuntu, you can find a list of versions and their names here:[URL].. Restart your computer one more time, and you should be good to go! This has been tested and confirmed to work on: -Ubuntu 9.1(karmic) with an Atheros 928x 802.11n wireless card, using the Ubuntu installed network software, in a Gateway NV53 laptop connected to a belkin 802.11n wireless router.-HP base station / 802.11g airport express

Just rebuilt my file/print server using an ECS 945GCD-M Atom motherboard. Running it under 9.10 (2.6.31-20) using the same cable and port on my Netgear switch that my old server connected to at 1GB/s without issue (old server's NIC was Intel-based).
Found the driver is an AR813x, & downloaded & installed the latest driver from here (1.0.1.9). sudo lshw -C network now shows that it's using the new driver, but still sitting at 100MB/s:

I got a used computer (Toshiba Satellite A215-S5829) for Christmas, and it was running Vista *shudder* so I decided to wipe the hard drive, and install the latest Ubuntu. This is my first real foray into linux, and I've loved the system, but the only problem I've had with is so far is I can't get the wireless to work. I believe the card it has is Atheros AR5001, and I've tried installing the "madwifi" drivers, but I can't get them to register. I've been following the suggestions of dozens of different forum posts and answers I've found scattered around the internet, but I haven't been able to get anything to work correctly.
When I view the "Additional Drivers" in System > Administration, it says "Alternate Atheros "madwifi" driver: This driver is activated but in use," but when I click on the internet icon in the top panel, it only gives me the wired connection. It used to also give me the wireless option, just without ever successfully finding any wireless networks to which it could connect. Like I said, I've done about a half-dozen different things without any success.
I'm trying to get bluetooth working. I have an ASUS USB-BT211 USB 2.0 Mini Bluetooth Dongle. Where do I find the driver and how do I install it? (Currently when I plug the dongle in, it is ignored.)

I realise there are a few threads of issues with the AR8152 chipset and Ubuntu 11.04, however, my issue does not appear to be the same as others, nor does there appear to be a consistent solution yet. My ethernet worked fine in Ubuntu 10.10, but after upgrading to 11.04, I experience the errors I am about to explain. I also experience these when booting off a Ubuntu 11.04 Live CD, so it's not just the upgrade the caused the issues. The issue is, if I turn on my system without the ethernet cable plugged in, and then plug the ethernet cable in once I've logged into Ubuntu, the system will not detect it, at all. No amount of network manager of dhclient eth0 will get it to function, however, the device itself still appears in the system. If I turn the system on with the ethernet plugged in, however, it will get an IP address and function correctly. I tried to download the drivers from Atheros and build them, but for whatever reason it complained about me not having autoconf.h or automake.h (can't remember which), despite having build-essentials and linux-headers-generic installed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy old Winbook laptop had good wifi connection under Ubuntu 9.10 but shows 'disabled' under Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. At least under 10.10 it came up with working video (had to mess with GRUB on 10.04 before video would work). I have an onboard wi-fi card that has never worked well with any Linux as far as I know but the Atheros PCMCIA card worked solid under Karmic (9.10). Here is some diag. info.

I recently purchased an MSI 740GM-P25 with an Atheros AR8131M gigabit ethernet adapter onboard. I have since discovered that it's not the easiest device to get working in CentOS (or any other distro I've tried, frankly). Anybody use this card and have instructions on how to get it working? I've got a lot of experience with Linux, but I've never been quite as good with hardware stuff as I probably should be. I've included a list of things I've already attempted below (limited as the list may be).
1) Tried both CentOS 5.5 x86_64 and Fedora 13 x86_64
2) Tried to download and compile the source code for three different Atheros drivers from their website (the Linux drivers listed here) in Fedora 13. All stated that I was using a kernel version that was unsupported (>2.4.0) when attempting to compile.
EDIT: Also, I contacted MSI directly for assistance.I got the simple yet incredibly unhelpful "we can't help you unless you use Windows" response. So there is no official support (and therefore no driver) provided by the manufacturer.
I was using an extremely common debian based distro, but I have been rebooting my pc non stop for the last two days trying to get my nvidia fx5200 drivers to work. (it is just IMPOSSIBLE to disable the nouveau driver, i have tried blacklisting it, editing xorg etc, nothing works) I need to know if there are many issues with getting nvidia graphics cards to work in debian. it seems like the last 18 months worth of releases on all the other debian based distros have completely broken all support for any nvidia card made prior to 2011. i know for a fact that in windows xp all my hardware works perfectly, but i really dont want to have to use that, i have been a linux user for more than 5 years now, but all i am really looking for now is reliability. i want to be able to use the nvidia-173 driver, as i know that this allows me to watch the movies i take on my dv camera, and ......
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got a little netbook, and all works fine, except for one small thing. I'm able to connect to a wireless network with my Atheros AR5001 just fine. However, if I right click on the network icon, and disable network or wireless and enable it again, wireless won't work anymore. I can't see and connect to any network at all. Except when using airodump-ng from the famous aircrack-ng tool set. When using airodump I'm able to see any network and their specs just fine. I don't even have to be in monitor mode to do airodump-ng (the wireless must be off in the network manager though). Is there any way of getting my wireless back when I turn it on again?

Whatever the driver is, it works with the pretty unpopular Musix distribution, because wireless worked instantly when I got that. I switched because it was old and slow.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't get my wireless into monitor mode. I;m running ubuntu 9.1 karmic It connects fine to wireless networks. But when i do: sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode monitor. I get: Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy. I can only see wlan0 (wmaster0, eth0), not ath0 or wifi0 mentioned elsewhere, in wireshark. I only see my own ip and packets coming to and from that. my system tells me i have an atheros ar9285 chipset in place.
