Aug 21, 2010A recent update to ffmpeg, in which I've learned was an upgrade to the restricted ffmpeg as opposed to the unrestricted default one that is in the official repos, has now made it unable for me to use mplayer or Devede. Reading up about this, especially from here: [URL].. I have learned it's a frequent problem when installing the restricted ffmpeg. Basically what Devede says at startup is:

mencoder
Devede needs them to work. If you want to use Devede, you must install all of them. Using the terminal to open mplayer (or mencoder), I get this error: mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference From my research, seems as though the problem lies in libavformat52 not being installed (or removed) and libavformat-extra-52 is installed, which is the same thing, but because it's the restricted version, it is called something different. Anybody know if that is correct?
Also, checking up, libavformat-unstripped-52 isn't installed but available, so should I install that to replace the missing libavformat52, as when I sudo aptitude install libavformat52, it says it conflicts with libavformat-extra-52?
I installed libavformat-unstripped-52, which didn't conflict with the already installed libavformat-extra-52, just to see if it would basically just replace the missing libavformat52, which conflicted with libavformat-extra-52 and couldn't be installed safely, but after I did, nothing changed. I still get the same error with opening Devede and mplayer (or mencoder) in the terminal.

Mar 18, 2010I'm wondering if anyone distributes mplayer, mencoder, and ffmpeg, up-to-date builds of each and their associated dependencies (x264, faac, xvid, etc).I had to compile all that stuff myself and fought with it, and finally got it working.
If no one distributes latest builds, then I was thinking of going further with what I've done to help others: virtualbox lenny and automated compiles of all packages and putting up the builds, with latest revisions of mplayer and ffmpeg from their source code repos. Using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to isolate the build so any modern linux can run the produced binaries, with only glibc as a dependency.

Sep 4, 2009I thought this may be of interest, so I'm sharing. I've built some experimental mplayer packages for Fedora 11 and Rawhide (x86-32 and x86-64 arches) with shiny new features. Aside from being very recent snapshots, one of them includes support for hardware video playback acceleration via VDPAU and VAAPI, and the other includes support for multi-threaded playback (so you can split the decoding load across multiple cores).
The playback acceleration can definitely be used on NVIDIA adapters (from the GeForce 8xxx series onwards) using the proprietary driver (not, unfortunately, nouveau). Also on Intel Poulsbo (GMA 500) adapters, using my packaged version of the native driver for that chipset (link is in the blog post). VDPAU acceleration is also allegedly possible on S3 Chrome 530 GT and S3 Chrome 540 GTX adapters using S3�s own driver, but I haven't had the chance to test that. Multi-threaded playback can be done on any system, but only really makes sense on those with multiple processors (cores).

Jul 17, 2011I am using mplayer with Umplayer/Smplayer as graphic front ends. I have enabled DVD menus by checking the box in Preference > Drives in Umplayer(also tried Smplayer) but there is still no menu when I stick a DVD in the dvd drive, on the other hand the menus show up if I use VLC to play the DVD so it is not the dvd's problem.
I have already installed libdvdnav4.

Nov 20, 2009When I try mplayer with different distros, I get different results. Right now I have Kubuntu Karmic on the hard drive, but most of the time I'm running Kiara, which is a rebuild of Slax, from a live CD. With Slax, and (I believe) also with Slackware, Mplayer doesn't seem to support playing flv (flash video), or, strange to say, ogg. Now, with Karmic, I can't get full-screen video, though I can get that with most Debian-based distros, including the earlier kubuntu jaunty. Any way of closing up these gaps?

The only major thing referring to multimedia in the past few days I remember is installing 'h264enc' from Packman, however, meanwhile I uninstalled this package, yet the problem persists.

Jul 10, 2010where I can find a package for mplayer with dvdnav support enabled?
I was disappointed to discover that in 10.04 dvdnav support was disabled in mplayer. I rely on it for my mythtv front end box to be able to play DVDs. According to a bug it was disabled because of an upstream email chain where dvdnav was considered 'experimental' and 'not ready for production use'. Funny as it worked fine for me.
Post #6 here is where I found the above reasoning for it being disabled.

Fedora :: Mencoder - FPS And Audio Sync
Nov 22, 2009I have found that if I change the FPS of a video, the audio is out of sync.
Is there a way in mencoder to have it correct this, and maintain the correct sync?
I don't think it is just a matter of audio/video delay. I have tried many times to correct this via that method, and it doesn't come close. Although, if I encode the video to another format, but with the original fps, the audio is sync'd.

General :: Why Can I Watch It With Gnome-mplayer But Not With Mplayer?
Mar 3, 2011This should be a very elementary question. I have a URL like http://SERVERNAME/file.wmv. When I enter it in "Open Location" in gnome-mpLayer it connects to the server and plays the stream. But when I run

I think my usage of mplayer in the terminal is correct, since I can watch other URL's.It's only this specific one that doesn't work (I am not authorized to write the URL because they want it to be private.So my question is: Does anyone know why I get this loop? Or is it possible to see how mplayer is called by gnome-mplayer and what output messages it generates?I use gnome-mplayer 0.9.9.2 and mplayer 1.0rc4-4.4.5 on Ubuntu 10.10.

My question is simple: How do I use this command: mplayer -ao pcm *.m4a -ao pcm:file="*.mp3" to convert whole directories and place the converted tracks into another directory. The way it's listed above it will convert all songs with a .mp4 extension into a single file with a .mp3 extension. Which of course, is not what I want, but I know of no other way to use this command.

Oct 13, 2009I guess I need to start off by saying that I am new to Fedora. Most of my media files come from iTune. therefore, I have download mplayer, xmm and Audacious to play the ACC, Mp4 and Mpv files. None of the media players play ACC or mp4 files. I downloaded the ACC plugins for mplayer, XMM and Audacious but it still does not work. Also Mplayer will not show show a video file, but the sound works. When I start mplayer the screen freezes and glitches. I have screen shots showing the glitch issue.

And also, I want to know if I can know whether the mplayer is running well. For example, if I use "mplayer wrong.txt". You can still get "ps -ef|grep mplayer....",but you just know that mplayer will get error to play .txt file.

Fedora :: MPlayer / VLC Freezing Randomly In F13
Aug 18, 2010I'm running Fedora 13 32-bit on a Samsung NC20 netbook (specifications here: [URL]. Everything works fine, with the exception of media playback via VLC and mplayer. The biggest problem is that the entire OS frequently locks up when exiting full-screen playback in either application, and occasionally locks-up when starting playback via mplayer. Video is also always on top of other windows, regardless of whether the application is configured to be always on top.
The lock-ups are severe enough to warrant powering off the machine, as CTRL+ALT+Fx does nothing. I suspect this is related to the machine's VIA CPU/graphics chipset - I've had problems with them before in other Linux distros, but playback was fine under F12 on the same machine. Because the video windows are always on top, I suspect there's a general issue affecting media playback - hopefully configuration related!
