I recently purchased some RAM from ebay and discovered what appears to be one stick is bad and one is good. The purchase was for 2 X 1 GB. My mother board is supposed to support 4 X 1 GB for a total of 4 GB, and there are 4 slots on the board for RAM. It is PC 3200, 400 MHz, 184 pin and that is how the item was listed. I ran multiple tests on the RAM sticks I purchased as well as the RAM I have the came with the machine (when I purchased the machine used). The machine worked fine when I purchased it and one of the RAM sticks I purchased is currently in the machine along with the original ram (total 2 X 256 MB + 1 X 1 GB) and works fine. It is just that one stick that is problematic.
Now, in the most recent email the seller sends me, he claims the density of the memory is not correct and that is the reason the stick does not work. This does not make sense to me for a few reasonts:
1) If the density is not correct then how come the other stick works fine in there? 2) Why then does memtest86 (run on that actual machine, through that mobo) show one of the sticks as passing with flying colors and the other as screwed up every which way from sunday? 3) If the manufacturer's specs on my mobo says that it has 4 slots and supports a total of 4 GB with 1 GB sticks in each slot, then how can density be an issue (note: there are 8 dram chips on ea stick of this memory I purchased).
I see that, according to ebay's buyer protection policy I have 45 days from the date of purchase and the RAM was purchased 22 days ago (I'm about in the middle of that time period). I still have some time to resolve this but I was hoping to get some feedback from you guys to help me make sure I'm on the right track and that the situation with the RAM really is as I believe it is.

One of my 2 harddisks, a Hitachi HDS72101, is very slow, the driver is ahci.
Output of "hdparm -t /dev/sda":
/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 8 MB in 3.20 seconds = 2.50 MB/sec
No problem with the other one, a Hitachi HDS72161, the driver is pata_ali.
Output of "hdparm -t /dev/sdb":
/dev/sdb:
Timing buffered disk reads: 224 MB in 3.00 seconds = 74.63 MB/sec
How could I get better performance for /dev/sda ?
My system: openSUSE-11.3 on amd64

I use WD hard drives. They provide a quick erase utility which erases the first and last MB of the HD. This operation takes about 5 minutes.
A laptop uses a SATA Hitachi hard drive. Hitachi provides wipe software but no quick wipe as above.
Anyone know of a general utility which will quick erase the first and last MB of a particular hard drive?

Up through Slackware 13.0 I used xorg.conf without trouble. On Slackware 13.1 I am caught between two unacceptable alternatives. If I don't use xorg.conf at all I can't adjust the screen density between e.g., 640 x 480 and 1024 x 768 by hitting <ctl><alt>+ or <ctl<alt>- If I use the same xorg.conf that I have used for years I gain the above facility but when I go to a console session via <ctl><alt>F1 the monitor complains that it is being fed bad information. If I can't resolve this conflict I will have to retreat to Slackware 13.0.

I'm currently using Ubuntu, but just ordered a new SSD (64GB) & plan to install Fedora on it- but just have a few questions...
- What is Fedora's position on MONO & MoonLight?
- I will be leaving /home on my 600+ BGB HDD, but root, /usr & swap will be on my SSD- will there be any potential issues?
- What format should I use (Ext3, Ext4, XFS...) for my SSD?
- Any recommendation of rpm repo's I should add?
- Will FGLRX work with FC13 or FC12

Update:so I can burn DVD+Rs fine. I burned Fedora 14 originally on this machine (in F13), although I'll have to check to see what kind of disks I was using.
Here is my posting from unix.stackexchange.com:
I have been trying to burn a few ISOs lately with no success and have certainly used this hardware in the past, so I am not sure what's going on. I am using DVD-R media (tried multiple discs) which appears to be supported by my drive. Here is the error I received in GnomeBaker on Fedora 14 (64):
Code:
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/home/tja/Downloads/Torrents/bodhi_0.1.6.iso of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=2h/CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT]: Wrong medium type

I am building my first rpm package and I cannot seem to find out how to change an existing .tgz to a .tar.gz as required by the rpm .spec file - I've attempted to search on this, but I can't find the exact command I'm looking for. Specifically, I hope to avoid having to untar the .tgz and simply convert it to the .tar.gz format.
