Fedora :: Live CD'S Unexpected Behavior At Installation

Sep 17, 2009

1 Choose install to free space on HD where Lenny was the only other OS. No windows this unit.

2. Progressed through disk one and 2 and at end of 2 when no question was asked concerning MBR I knew I had lost dual boot.

3. Fedora booted and I thought the first thing I will do is contact forum and see if I can correct these shortcomings. No internet access in Fedora and that was due I am sure to a choice at setup I did not realize.

4. So I put gparted live CD in, deleted that partition, rebooted to a black screen with word grub flashing cursor and sorry I forgot the text.

5. Went back with gparted to look over the partition and all I could see was the boot flaf was gone (If I remember right that is not a necessity as long as there is /. But I went to flags checked it again rebooted same screen. Obviously Fedora did something to MBR?

6. Deleted Lenny, reinstalled and here I am so someone satisfy my curious nature.

Debian Installation :: Odd NIC Behavior On Install?

Sep 10, 2010

Using a Realtek 8111/8168b Revision 1 NIC on a desktop comp, it's being detected by Lenny, Squeeze, and Gentoo (09/02/2010) installers (all are AMD64 distro's being run on a dual core intel processor), the r8169 driver is being loaded automatically on all of them. However, at the moment the NIC is detected during the net-installs, it goes dead until power has been cut. The switch doesn't register it as being active, nor do any of the activity lights on the motherboard register it as being active. In Gentoo's setup I can run an ifconfig and see the NIC as eth0 as it should be, I can ping the loopback as well as a statically assigned IP address. However pinging anything else in the LAN results in timeouts, and anything outside of the LAN results in hosts not found.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Tried - Very Odd Screen Behavior?

Apr 12, 2011

I just tried uprgading from 10.10 on my daughter's pc to 11.04(beta) as we wanted to find out about Unity et al. I thought the upgrade went well but on reboot when the desktop comes up, it's all funky in behavior - mouse is jump, arrows don't reliably work the menus - odd background images show up in graphic blocks. Do you think I can salvage this, or should I am I stuck reloading back to 10.10?

Fedora :: Where Did 'Window Behavior' Go

Nov 27, 2009

There used to be an option within the Preferences section in Gnome for 'Window Behaviour' where you could change the behaviour of windows such as roll up on double click instead of maximize and that sort of stuff.I can't seem to find it on F12 and can't find anything else that allows me to adjust those types of behaviours.

Fedora :: Odd Widget And Desktop Behavior?

Jan 22, 2011

I'm running KDE on Fedora 13 and was trying to alter some display settings so that the windows wouldn't maximize when dragged to the edge of the screen. I did that, but at one point "Kwin" crashed, and now there's some odd things happening.

1. I get the "drag me" palm when I'm mousing over the desktop and if I click, I can drag the background around as if it were a window.

2. My "maximize" "minimize" and "close" buttons don't work.

3. It appears nothing in the titlebar of windows works: can't drag them, can't shade or do anything "clickable" -- close, min, max, nothing works.

I tried returning the settings to their original state but it didn't help.I tried restarting the computer too, and that didn't help. I'm guessing something crashed and a setting got hard set that shouldn't be. I'm also guessing that if I rename a .kde/something folder it will reset to defaults. What .kde folder should I play with?

Fedora :: Get Back Old Alt+Tab Behavior In F15/GNOME3?

May 28, 2011

After upgrading to F15 I noticed that Alt+Tab behaves now differently. For example, if I have several terminal windows open, I can't cycle through all of them by just pressing Alt+Tab repeatedly. Now the system just displays one terminal icon and icons for each terminal window, but if I keep pressing Tab (Alt being down all the time), it does not switch the window.

I want back the old behavior of the Alt+Tab keys!

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 - Unity Upgrade Inconsistent Behavior

Jun 4, 2011

I installed Ubuntu two ways, both by partitioning the hard drive and installing Ubuntu in its own partition, and also where the "run within Windows" option was available. I then upgraded both to Ubuntu 11.04. When I start Ubuntu in the "own partition" installation, Unity runs without complaint. When I start Ubuntu in the "run within Windows" installation, Unity baulks, giving an error message that I don't have some (unspecified) of the hardware it needs to run, and I am kicked back to the classic Ubuntu control screen setup. Obviously the two ways to install Ubuntu don't result in it having the same behavior. Alternately, since the version installed to "run within Windows" seems to do no such thing, and also gobbled up almost all the free space in my Windows-7 partition without prior warning, any clue how to uninstall that version cleanly?

Fedora :: FC15 Hibernate Behavior Different From FC14

Aug 31, 2011

I have just upgraded my Lenovo T61 from FC14 to FC15. Under FC14, I had the system set up to hibernate when the lid was closed. When I opened the lid, the system would automatically come out of hibernation in just a few seconds and I would be back to where I was.

Under FC15, I have also set it to hibernate when the lid closes. When I open the lid, nothing happens until I tap the power button, and then it comes out of hibernation via some kind of reboot: I see the Lenovo splash screen, then the machine beeps and goes into a wakeup routine, which takes much longer than it did under FC14.

Fedora :: PulseAudio USB Device Default Behavior Wrong

Feb 8, 2010

Based on my experience with external devices such as USB microphones and USB speakers, PulseAudio always defaults to the motherboard/built-in device rather than any USB device. My expectation is that if someone is using an external USB device to supplement what is on the motherboard/built-in, they are going to be doing that to overcome a limitation of the motherboard/built-in devices, and therefore it is logical that when external USB devices are present on a system, these be the default. (For example, I want sound from my beefy set of Logitech USB speakers and not from the tinny notebook speakers).

It is no problem for me to manually set/reset the active device, however I believe that the average user expects to plug in a USB microphone or speakers and assume that the system will automatically change the default. Furthermore without this action, some users not used to the Linux audio settings will be led to believe that the USB devices are not supported, when in fact it is simply a problem that they have not been selected for use rather than the motherboard/built-in devices.I think this warrants me entering a bug report, but I wanted to hear what others think before proceeding to enter a bug report. Is the default behavior of PulseAudio towards USB devices wrong? What do you think?

Fedora :: FC12 - Weird Behavior With Video Resolution

Mar 26, 2010

I have FedoraCore 12 x86 DVD already installed since the last weekend, no Internet connection available yet for such PC for lack of time to work in such PC. Since two days ago my video resolution has a weird behavior (I only did one configuration change about pass 800x600 to 1024x768) and since there I never did other change video resolution, and with the new configuration I have been using Linux without problems. Now two days ago When I start up the PC and arrive to the login screen I can see clearly that the resolution for my all graphical interface can be 800x600.

After to enter to my account I see the follow behavior, that consist in load the graphical environment and changing to 1024x768 resolution. See my Photo01.png, after that the pointer of my mouse (black row) never is show, I must do something like Photo02.png to see the black row. My only solution by the moment is arrive to the configuration resolution (see Photo03.png) and only do click in Apply button to refresh all the environment and see the desired black row (pointer), see Photo04.png, but I must do this each time when I start up the PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dpkg-deb Error: Unexpected Number Of Arguments To --control?

Mar 1, 2010

I just upgraded from jaunty and somewhere in the process (or just after, I'm no longer sure just when it started) I started getting this error whenever I try to install or upgrade a package. Some of my software isn't working properly - some won't even load - so I'm not sure if the installations are actually succeeding, or not. But apt-get install -f shows nothing but a list of stuff I need to autoremove (mostly dev files). This particular message is the output of the details tab in synaptic, but I've gotten the same thing in terminal from apt-get. Quote:

Fedora Installation :: VirtualBox 13 Guest: Live CD Installation Failure

Aug 3, 2010

Running VirtualBox 3.2.6 under some host OS (should be irrelevant which one, right?), I created a machine, intending to install Fedora 13 on it. Got the Fedora 13 Live CD iso image, and an 8.6 GB virtual hard drive, completely blank. I set the machine to boot off the Live CD image. The Live CD boots nicely and I get to its desktop. I open "Install to Hard Drive"...and nothing happens. No error message, zip, nada. Inspection of the system shows a series of odd file systems, but I have no clue what they are for and whether they're usable or not.

The sticky [URL] mentions that the blank virtual hard disk should be partitioned and formatted beforehand...So I did, using the Live CD's Disk Utility (Applications: System Tools: Disk Utility). Although the sticky states the small /boot partition should be ext2 or ext3, the Live CD installer proposes to reformat it as ext4. Shouldn't we have formatted it as ext4 right away, then? Also, the installer set the /boot partition's size to 524 MB, not 200 MB as recommended by the sticky.

OBSERVATION: This was not easy because VirtualBox sets the display to 800x600 at most, and the Disk Utility spills beyond those confines WITHOUT PROVIDING SLIDERS. It was sheer luck that the required buttons (create partition, format partition) were barely reachable (at the bottom edge of the screen). This is a serious problem, because increasing the VirtualBox display size can only be done *after* installation (see for instance[URL] - since this guest addition requires rebooting the guest OS, it probably won't stick to the Live CD).

Once those two partitions are prepared and the virtual machine rebooted, "Install to Hard Drive" works as expected.

OBSERVATION: It is absolutely inexcusable that the Live CD installer (Anaconda?) does not propose to do this partitioning and formatting for the user. It is even more inexcusable that it should fail without giving any feedback whatsoever to the user.

Aside: VirtualBox's guest additions does not work correctly (for 3.2.6 anyway). The Devices: Install Guest Additions menu merely mounts a CD image VBOXADDITIONS_3.2.6_63112) without any feedback (expected feedback because the menu ends with an ellipsis). The CD, once opened, has an Open Autorun Prompt button...which fails to do anything. Manually running autorun.sh also fails. I had to manually invoke VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run from a terminal to get anywhere. Even then I was unable to go higher than 1024x768.

Fedora Installation :: Live Installation Hangs Up At Initial Login?

Dec 2, 2010

I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.

I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.

I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).

Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.

I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.

I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.

Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:51 PM ----------

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?

Fedora Installation :: Can't Run 10 Live CD

Mar 13, 2009

Using live CD to check out Fedora10 on WindowsVista, IntelPentiumDual E2180, NTFS. Used Power2Go (default program) to burn ISO to CD. Shouldn't be the problem as I used it to download Fedora6 and those work fine. Downloaded and burned twice in case problem was faulty CD. Boot hangs up after initial screen indicates VMlinuz and image are loading, and graphic progress bar runs through. I get blank screen with blinking cursor, I can enter text all I want to. but no response to any commands. When I exit, shut down screen displays messages that look like I was totally running a linux system.

P.S. Found solution in other forum, press esc during progress bar load, now boot hangs up after loading cups.Going to check out boot edit options on wiki.
