videos videos that is showing on the non videos websites is causing breaking up into pieces. how i fix this? ubuntu 11.04 updates mess the flash player up? works fine on videos website if i click on the video link.
anyway why is the sounds coming in medium on the ubuntu 11.04? i turn it all the way up past the 100% on the output volume. but it reset after ubuntu reboot. some videos i can very hear on what they are saying. no problem using windows 7 on hearing them.
I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.
I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)
I used t be able to install ubuntu, now I was able to install Fedador, but I get this message when I try to insatll ubutu can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found What do I do
I'm trying to install netbook remix on my out-of-the-box 1005PE with windows 7. I used LinuxLive USB Creator 2.4 to put the netbook remix file onto my usb device. I get to the part where I choose whether I want persistent mode, live mode, installation or a few other options. I chose installation. Here is what I see on my screen starting a little before where I think the error is:

I am planning on doing an upgrade on one of our systems from Fedora Core 7 to the Fedora Core 12 distribution. I have read Bruce Byfield's article "Upgrading to the newest Fedora release", and the approach that I am planning on taking is the upgrading via the DVD medium.

i have uninstalled and reinstalled alsa and made sure its not muted, in pulse audio it displays sound is coming out when i play a song, but no sound is actually coming out.. i dont want to go back to windows, but if i cant get sound im going to have to
1. had working xp install on 320 gb hard disk with only one partition. 2. backed up and used easeus to shrink and create new partition on same hard drive. 3. tried to install from a working live cd but got medium not found error. 4. looked for fix but didnt find it so i used wubi to install it to the partition i created. 5. worked but annoyingly slow so looked for guide to switch from wubi to full install. 6. followed guide and it installed to a new partition i made with gparted and it formatted that one to ext4 but i still had the wubi install which i didnt want. (btw, non-wubi is much > wubi install). 7. went to xp to uninstall wubi, delete wubi partition, and grow full ubuntu install partition with easeus. easeus requires reboot.
8. restart comp to find an error that said no partition found and something else about grub rescue. 9. try live cds but hard drive not detected and tried win7 and xp but they didnt even get into setup 10. make plan: get bro to format my hardd disk using his compyter so i csn try ubuntu onw more time
i got a bunch of different types of errors but im really close to giving up on it entirely.
I have even tried to run the Live CD and All I get is (initramfs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system.With out the CD in the drive I get, Try (hd0,0): EXT2.I have use of the second CD I made for a friend and I have a LIVE version running now.
I have a 4 core Sandy Bridge Win7-64 system running Parallels Desktop 4. I created a new VM with a CDROM connected to the 11.04 ISO. It perks for a little while showing some Ubuntu stuff then I get the console message "(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system".I don't get this. It is obviously booting from the CDROM. I'm guessing it does not like the unformatted disk. Why doesn't it offer to format the disk of start the installation prcess? Is it something else?
Background info: So I installed 11.04 32 bit and it messed my computer up therefore after trying everything I got rid of it, now I've been trying to install the 10.04 long support version from the official ubuntu website and it doesn't seem to be working. Neither the 32 bit version or the 64 bit. To convert the iso etc. etc. I used "Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.0" which is reccommended from the ubuntu website and it didn't work. So I tried "unetbootin-win-549" which a friend recommended to me - didn't work either.
Main problem: The menu loads up when I turn on the computer and whether I click on the install ubuntu, or try ubuntu from usb option - both go to the ubuntu screen where the dot's under "ubuntu" flash for about 2 minutes before taking me to a screen where the following message appears: Code: (initframs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system And after about 5 seconds intervals, messages similar to this appear for about 7 or 8 times:

When I install/run a demo on my Laptop, it works perfectly fine. Though when I go into my desktop, it results in the following error: (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system. It's autobooting off the same boot disk, I've md5'd the iso to check if it's correct but no joy.
lenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?
I have tried burning a number of ISO's of 101.10 and 11.04 to DVD and intalling them on 2 of my desktop machines. I eventually see: ('initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system' The thought just occurred to me as I type this, perhaps I can only install from a CD and not a DVD?
I had been trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 after formatting my machine. When i select install of the welcome screen, the logo blinks for few minutes and then displays a error as

Then goes to busy box.
"The same thing appears with Ubuntu 8.10, which i was using before!"
I know Xubuntu is a "quiet" OS, but I don't even get a login sound and I have checked the box in Login Screen settings. I'm using 10.04 final. Are there no system sounds in this version? There doesn't seem to be a way to specify your own chosen sound by pointing to a directory.
I have installed the updates as it was showing by the update manager.After completion of the installation ,the os asked for the rebooting the system so i have just clicked on it..when i again comes to enter the ubuntu...a terminal type window is coming just after my click on ubuntu.it is something like this---

I have windows 7 installed on my system.After that I installed Ubuntu 8.XX on it.I have made a drive empty for this purpose and use manuall installation on this drive.When installation completed, I restart my PC but didn't saw option of Windows(or other) in boot menu.My Ubuntu is working fine and I can see the C and D drives ( which were there before installation) and there are all files related to windows in C.Can anybody let me know how to get Windows option in booting menu so that I can use my windows too.
I installed on my system "window xp" and "rhel4 update 2" but due to some problem I removed my windows xp O/S and installed that again after that grub boot menu is not coming so I can't log in properly in linux system.C
I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
I have two 32-bit boxes here at work on a windows network. Box A I set up a couple months ago with Squeeze. Box B has a fresh install of Squeeze and I want to transfer all my /home and info/setting from Box A to Box B. I have Box B set up with /home on it's own partition. Is this as easy as using rsync over the network? Or would scp be better?
I have just "finished" updating my Ubuntu 9.10. (somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).
This is the error message I get as soon as the installation disc loads up. The CD works in other computers but not my new custom build. Here's the hardware:
I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

I've just installed Fedora 11 and have noticed some funkiness regarding "window and button sounds".
Here are my observations: (All found using "Sound Preferences")
If "Output Volume" (OV) is set to max, and "Alert Volume" (AV) is set to max, the "window and button sounds" (WABS) are very loud. This seems to be correct.
If I begin to move OV to a lower slider value, the WABS become quieter twice as fast as other sounds (such as ..... videos). However, all sounds seem to get quieter in some sort of inverse curve. (As opposed to the more normal linear fashion.) At about 50% level the WABS are non-existent and other sounds are way too quiet.
Now here's the funky thing. If I leave OV at full and begin to reduce AV, whenever a WABS is heard, the OV volume temporarily reduces to the AV level until the sound is finished.
And here's the uber funky thing: If I reduce OV by 25% and AV by 50% and an WABS occurs, the OV volume temporarily changes to a 75% reduced volume. This mathematical relationship remains true until the combined value is greater than 100% reduction, at which point the speaker icon temporarily shows a mute icon (small red "x") and no sound is heard. (This can be seen in "Sound Preferences" and the Gnome-Panel icon.)
Another thing I've noticed is the "Master" slider in "Advance Volume Control" hits rock bottom when the "Sound Preferences" slider is only at 50%. (The terminal based alsamixer has the same behaviour.)
On a positive note, enabling Japanese input was by far the easiest it has ever been on Linux, or even Windows. Awesome! Let's just hope this iBus thingy isn't too buggy... Nyuk, nyuk!
I'm not sure how to find out exactly what my sound chip might be, but it's some nVidia nForce2 doohickey.
the message on the title only happens with Ubuntu. In Fedora, it just stops booting from LiveCD with "WARNING: Cannot find root file system!". The rest of the symptoms are the same.I'm trying to install Fedora LiveCD on an IBM i Series notebook (model 1161-21X). It's a Celeron powered unit with RAM expanded to 512MB. It has a 10GB HDD, and an internal CD-ROM drive. Although it has two USB ports (1.1), it cannot boot from a USB drive, so no pendrive nor external CD unit solution possible.When I boot from LiveCD, it stops booting with the message above. Looking atsg, there's no CD-ROM driver loaded. Also, there's a char device for sg0, but no block device for it, so no way to mount it. It seems that the driver module has been removed from the kernel. I'm currently running Fedora Core 5 in it. This very same problem happens with any Ubuntu newer that 6 or any Fedora post 7.
I have already read the related threads but unfortunately, none of the solutions works/ applies to my problem: Having Ubuntu 10.10 as bootable DVD, I am trying to upgrade from Jaunty. When I do so however, after selcting "Install Ubuntu 10.10" in the installer menu I get the "unable to find medium containing live file system" error. I already installed grub2 and set acpi=off, my DVD is on primary master and, obviously boots as well.
