Fedora Installation :: No "Updates Available" Notifications With F10

Jan 25, 2009

On my previous FC7 boxes, I got icons in the top panel advising me that package updates were available (which I then installed with yum update). With F10, I sometimes briefly see a PackageKit icon in the top panel (not sure what it's advising me of), which disappears after a second or two - easily missed if I'm briefly distracted by something...

F10's Update System option nicely displays info about available security, bug fix and enhancement updates, so long as I remember to select this menu option. But there is nothing at boot or login time which tells me that there are updates available.

Is there some configuration setting I need to adjust to get notifications of new updates when available? There doesn't seem to be any service I can turn on to achieve this outcome.

Just an update on this - I've been away from my F10 box for a couple of hours, and upon return, I have a "Security updates available" popup! I left the box about half an hour after login - no popup at that time - how long should it take to see this popup if security updates are available? And what about if only bug fixes or enhancements are available - should there be some notification of this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Fedora Installation :: Get F14 Updates As Part Of A Kickstart Installation

Apr 5, 2011

I'd like to write a kickstart file that installs available Fedora 14 updates as part of the installation process, much as if I was doing a standard Fedora 14 installation and had enabled the 'updates' repo.

So my question is, is there an easy way to do this? I don't want to have to go down the route of downloading all updated packages and maintaining my own update repo (or indeed, creating a repo with the dependencies listed above).

Fedora :: Clear All Notifications In Gnome 3?

Jul 8, 2011

I opened firefox and it restored some ~15 windows I had open last time I rebooted. The problem is that for each window it opened it gave me a notification that it's ready, and now they won't go away. I know that I could simply remove them one by one, but that's a bit tedious and I really want to know if there's a faster way to clear all notifications when I'm not intending to look at any of them.

Here's what's happening at the bottom of my screen: I just find it really annoying because it pops up every time I accidentally touch the bottom edge of the desktop.

Fedora Installation :: F10 - Yum - Updates - Repositories - And Keys

Feb 8, 2009

I have what I suspect is a frequently encountered problem; indeed it may be an inevitable one. Moreover, I think that I know the solution to the problem. Let me explain.

History:
1. I downloaded f10 from the Fedora site.

2. I burned a DVD.

3. I installed f10 on my laptop using the DVD, and it seems to work correctly.

Symptoms:
4. I ran yum upgrade (as super user), and got the message 'No Packages marked for Update.'

5. I did the same thing for several days and got the same response.

6. I ran yum upgrade a* and got the same response. I thought that the mirror site might balk at large downloads.

Diagnosis:
From what I have read on the web I think the following is what happens.

What I will call the original repository-key system, the one that I downloaded and that is now on my DVD, is limited. It merely concerns the packages that are already on my DVD, and these packages are never changed in the original repository. Therefore, yum is working correctly and will always tell me that 'No Packages marked for Update.'

Cure:
There is a new repository-key system, and with it yum does real updates and upgrades. All I have to do is install the new repository-key system.

THE PROBLEM: ALTHOUGH I HAVE GOOGLED AND SEARCHED A LOT, I CANNOT FIND THE METHOD FOR GETTING AND INSTALLING THE NEW REPOSITORY-KEY SYSTEM IN F10. THERE MUST BE A SIMPLE STANDARDIZED METHOD. WHERE IS IT?

If the above is correct, then anyone who downloads and installs f10 as I did must face this problem.

Fedora Installation :: Getting CRC Errors When Trying To Run Updates / Solution For This?

Apr 18, 2009

I just installed Fedora 9 for the first time and have been unable to run updates nor am I able to use the add/remove programs feature. With the system updates the error I receive is within the /urs/share/packages area. I posted this http://amahi.pastebin.com/m131ea1d2 I also receive a different error when I run the Add/Remove programs feature and I receive a similar error. I also tried running these commands from root while logged in as root -- yum clean meatadata
yum -y update but this had no change to the system. I also thought it may have been a RPMFusion issue so I looked at their FAQ and ran the command line to enable RPMFusion and it advises that this package is already installed. I am getting confused by this and not sure where to start so that I dont keep going over the same things with and getting the same results.

Fedora Installation :: Updates After Install And Repo Lists / Saying Repo Not Found?

Mar 26, 2011

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.

ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83

1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?

2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.

3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.

4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

Fedora :: Software From Updates-testing Repo / Grabbed From Testing Repo When Run Regular Updates?

Jun 22, 2010

I am using Fedora 13 and I have one program (wine) that I need to start grabbing for the updates-testing repo instead of the default repositories in order to get newer versions. I think I can figure out how to add that repository, but I need to know if there are any others I need to disable or any other changes I need to make to my system so that I don't confuse my set up with conflicting updates.

Also, is there anything special I need to do to be sure that only that one program is grabbed from the testing repo when I run regular updates?
