When I try to format with EXT4 (Default) it says the boot volume cannot be EXT4, when I try EXT3 it says it doesn't match the Live filesystem. This is retarded it won't let me use either. (I don't usually throw around the word retarded, only in rare cases and this is one)

Jun 14, 2009It has crashed or failed to install on a known good system for the 5th time now. I have never had that problem with fedora before. I am now installing with ext3 instead of ext4. I am hoping for better success with it and will update. I was able to try MinGW with WINE before the first crash and I liked what I saw there. Only hoping to be able to get a good install this time.

Mar 20, 2010I have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever.It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. I believe I have messed this install up to the point of no return and think I should go ahead and start over.

While changing the filesystem can I do it by parts? what I mean is for example: I have 2 partitions like '/' and '/home' with ext3, so I backup data in '/home', change '/' to ext4 then mv files from '/home' to '/' and change '/home' to ext4 and finally mv those files from '/' to '/home'. Is that possible?

Then I convert the / partition filesystem by the following steps:login as root user in multi user mode read [url], and execute tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 modify /etc/fstab, change the type of / to ext4
reboot
(because fsck say running it on a mounted filesystem can cause filesystem damage, so i decide to reboot to single user mode first. maybe it's a mistake here) try to boot F11 to single user mode, failed
reboot from a SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD
run e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/mapper/VolGroup01-LogVol00 in SystemRescueCD-1.2.0 LiveCD, no error reported
reboot
try to boot F11 normally(multi user mode), but it failed at: EXT3-fs: dm-0: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (40).
I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.

Aug 10, 2010I'm running Ubuntu Lucid formatted ext3. It boots with Grub (old Grub) in sdb6 (hd1,5) It mounts at /, and its partition, sdb6. is flagged boot.
I created a new partition for Fedora 13, 64bit. I installed Fedora in sdb8 (hd1,7), formatted ext4, and created a separate /home in sdb7, formatted ext3, so I might share it with Ubuntu, in sdb6.
Fedora installed with Grub2. It booted fine, and after adjusting references in fstab Ubuntu booted OK too, but rather roughly.
That is when I shifted the boot flag to the Ubuntu partition. So now the original Ubuntu Grub is handling boot once again. Ubuntu boots as before, but I can't get Ubuntu's Grub to boot Fedora. An earlier post suggested this code, which generated error 13, Invalid or inappropriate executable:

I've got alternative lines invoking the kernel, because someone had suggested omitting the direct reference to root= ....
Either way I get error 2 - Bad File or directory.
I suspect the problem may be that I'm booting Grub in an ext3 partition and trying to invoke Fedora in an ext4 partition. Does anyone know if that is the likely cause of my problem? If so I can reinstall Fedora formatted ext3.
Alternatively, can I create a Fedora /boot partition, and move/reinstall Grub there? Either way -- should I use old Grub, so both Grubs are the same?
Should I have assigned mount points to sdb8 (Fedora) and sdb7 (home)? Currently I'm not using sdb7 at all.

General :: Recovering 1Tb Ext3 With Fsck.ext3?
May 20, 2011I Tarred and GZipped most of the data on one 1Tb partition and stuck the archives on a second 1Tb partition on a separate disk. I then proceeded to format the first partition with NTFS (from Linux.) The only problem is that I completely forgot that I had a CD drive and formatted sdc1 instead of sdd1! I began doing a full NTFS format and after a minute or two I cancelled it and decided to do a quick format. I then realized my mistake. I managed to find a copy of the superblock and began trying to recover the disk. fsck -t ext3 recognized the partition as NTFS but I luckily didn't have fsck.ntfs installed so it didn't touch it. I managed to get it working with fsck.ext3 (with -b,-B and -y) fsck.ext3 didn't mind that it was an NTFS partition.
Roughly how long will this take? It's running from Knoppix within a virtual machine to a USB hard drive which is 100% full. Days? Being that for a few minutes I attempted a full format am I going to end up with a bunch of corrupted archives? If I do end up with file corruption can anyone recommend a way of recovering the data / sorting it out? Is it likely to be just a few old files that are corrupt (It's my understanding that filesystems like to keep files in the same area on the disk to minimize the amount of head travel.) This might just be wishful thinking but as the filesystem fills up will ext3 put the newer files towards the end of the disk? If so then I'm hoping that a full NTFS format starts at the beginning of the disk.
OpenSUSE Install :: Resize Ext3 During Install?
Dec 14, 2009I've been using Kubuntu for several years now (and Fedora and RedHat before that) and decided to give openSuse a try. Looking for more love for the KDE version of my distro basically. Anyway, the install was pretty rough.
My first go was to try and resize my kubuntu partition (ext3) during the install. The installer froze at 1%. After a boot to kubuntu which ran fsck, it seems no damage was done. Without letting it run fsck, it could not mount though, so it was not without risk.
I tried to resize it myself after reading some forum entries here and came to the conclusion that resizing is just not worth the effort and tanked my dell recovery partition (when was I going to use that?) instead. If you do have to resize a partition, ext3 at least, I would recommend that you try another approach or at least resize it outside of the installer. Once I let it just reformat an existing partition, the installer managed to install to the hd.
I had another freeze after leaving the installer for some time as it was waiting for me to enter my host name. I rebooted and it figured out right where it should be though.
OpenSUSE Install :: Moving XFS To New EXT3 Partition
Feb 5, 2009I have an 80 GB XFS / partition which is dying. Got some errors like this:

It's not a problem to create another partition, I've got 2 500GB and 2 1TB disks, all EXT3. I've also 2 80 GB disks, 1 for / and 1 for /home. I will remove the 2 80 GB disks but I have a lot of stuff compiled myself. I use openSUSE 11.1. Is it possible to create a 80 GB EXT3 partition on each of the 500 GB hdd, 1 for / and 1 for /home and move the data to it? must it be done with the DD command or can I easily copy everything within a live-cd. The /boot and swap are already on one of the 500GB disks, and there is no bootrecord on the 80 GB disks.

Dec 15, 2009I have a Westel 1 TB external hard drive and when attempting to partition it, the partitioner never finishes refreshing the device. I've tried gparted live, opensuse, & ubuntu; and none of them finish refreshing the device.
Another issue is, I have 200 gig of music & movies that can't be wiped out because I got no room elsewhere to move them to. I would like to set a partition of 750 gig for the ext 3 and leave the rest for ntfs.

I want to unmount the current /home from sda7 and mount it to sdb1
I had a look at system -> drives management but just was able to mount the secondary drive sdb1 as "DataDrive"
I had a look at /etc/fstab. This doesn't show the recently mounted sda7 "DataDrive"
So now I'm somewhat lost on how to achieve the goal

Scenario 1. Copy all contents of /home to the new drive and then switch the /home mount point
Scenario 2. Switch the mount point of /home from sda7 to sdb1 and cp the contents afterwards

May 13, 2010I want to format an USB disk with ext3. If I do this with gparted, it will be formatted, but I cannot write to it. Reading is no problen, at least it shows the lost+found folder. I guess its a problem with access rights. It would be sufficient if user "papa" would have access on one ubuntu karmic machine. But I cannot solve this graphically. The purpose of the operation is to be able to copy my /home directory onto the USB disk as a backup, before I upgrade to the current version of Ubuntu. FAT32 is no option as some files are too long.

My questions: Will the upgrade convert my current ext3 partition into an ext4 one? How can I keep the ext3 partition? The release notes for 10.04 say:
The simplest way to select a different file system such as ext3 at installation time is to add the partman/default_filesystem=ext3 boot parameter when starting the installer.

Nov 18, 2010It seems to be (we have experienced) that 10.10 can't handle having an older ext3 drive mounted to a folder on the 1010 ext4 drive. The files get "corrupted", but afterwards, putting the drive back into the original older 9.04 system, the files are perfectly fine again.

Jan 1, 2010I have received an Lenovo T400 as a gift and am going to get rid of the Vista Business OS on it! It is a resource hog and sometimes has trouble hooking up to our router. I was curious yesterday on how much RAM was being used on idle and it was between 900mb and 1gb! I'm downloading Karmic 64-bit and would like to use the old GRUB instead of the beta Grub2. At least with the legacy grub I could edit it easier than the beta one. I am also wondering if Karmic would run fine using ext3 instead of ext4?

Apr 7, 2010I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I'm running Karmic Koala. I just reformatted an NTFS partition to Ext3, as I no longer need to access is from my windows installation. Now I'm unable to mount it though, and I get the message: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sda6 on /media/DATA2 (DATA2 being the name of the previous NTFS partition. Now the label is linuxdata)
When I try to mount it using sudo in terminal I get the following message if I use the label DATA2:
NTFS signature is missing.
Failed to mount '/dev/sda6': Ogiltigt argument
The device '/dev/sda6' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.
Maybe the wrong device is used? Or the whole disk instead of a
partition (e.g. /dev/sda, not /dev/sda1)? Or the other way around?
And if I use the label linuxdata: mount: can't find /media/linuxdata in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab I've tried to search for help, but been unable to find an explanation.

Nov 11, 2010I am using my flashdrive to install. I allocated 200gb for window 7 ult and used partition magic to format the rest to ext3 and swap for DISK 1. But when I try to install Ubuntu, installation can't seem to find the ext3 or the swap. It only sees my other drive in RAID 1.

Aug 1, 2011I'm trying to format a 500 GB external drive with gparted in ubuntu 10.10 (I searched & didn't see this issue in the forum). I set up and formatted two partitions, one for fat32, and the other with ext3, which appears to format ok, but I can't use it. Both partitions show up and appear to mount, but the ext3 partition won't accept activity (make new folder, copy in files), while the fat32 partition works fine. Both partitions show up ok when I query in terminal "sudo fdisk -l"

Jan 20, 2010I just made a new storage partition and formatted it as Ext3. Now, this particular partition is shown and can be read at the terminal "fdisk -l". However, unlike in my Mint 7 partition, it does not show in my Fedora 10.
