Fedora Installation :: Identify Partition Location - Getting The FEDORA Bootloader To Find The PREUPGRADE Kernel

May 29, 2010

Going from Fedora 12 to 13. Got to the point where I have to reboot to install, system reboots to 12. This is a triple boot system with Open Suse and Mint, and the grub2 bootloader from Mint is the bootloader for the whole shebang. In the "how to use preupgrade" instructions there's a line that says "dentify the drive and partition of your Fedora /boot folder." How? If that sounds odd, consider that in my set up "computer" shows 4 partitions (and with just three operating systems..?). I can mount them, but have a problem telling which sytem is Fedora, Suse or Mint. And getting the FEDORA bootloader to find the PREUPGRADE kernel ... Momma said there'd be days like this.

cat /etc/fstab just returned /dev/sda1 on /boot. I installed Fedora first, before Suse or Mint, so being on the first drive or partition sounds right, but the multiple drives throws me, and "just guessing" doesn't seem like the way to go.

Fedora Installation :: Using The Windows 7 Bootloader To Dual Boot

Jan 19, 2011

I am getting a new computer with Windows 7 installed. It will contain a second hard disk on which I will install Fedora Linux. I plan to put grub in the /boot partition of that disk,so I won't be able to boot Linux directly to start. I plan to use the Windows 7 bootloader to dual boot, and I understand in principle how this is done. I set up a previous computer which was running Vista this way, using the program Easy BCD which simplified setting up the Vista bootloader. But the Easy BCD website doesn't address the question of what to do with Windows 7.

How can I get grub going again? I have all 6 fedore core 10 cds and a live cd in case those will help, I am using the live cd to play in fedora right now, but I am not sure how to get access to grub.conf and what to change in it, because I am pretty sure I have to add Windows 7 to it.

Ubuntu :: GRUB2 Overwritten - Boot Into Windows Via TC Bootloader But "no Bootable Partition Found"?

Sep 11, 2010

I'm using Truecrypt to encrypt my Windows 7 OS. I also have unencrypted Ubuntu 10.04 installed on /dev/sda6 on the same hard drive. Since Truecrypt bootloader must be installed in MBR, I have GRUB2 installed on /dev/sda6, so I can use TC bootloader to load GRUB2. When I first install GRUB2 on /dev/sda6, I can use TC bootloader to load Ubuntu. But, if I boot into Windows via TC bootloader, and then later try to boot into Ubuntu, I get the message "no bootable partition found". I have to reinstall GRUB2 onto /dev/sda6, every time after I use windows in order to be able to boot into Ubuntu. It seems that starting Windows somehow overwrites GRUB2. Is there a fix for this?

Fedora Installation :: What Can Do From Ubuntu / GRUB 2 Bootloader Itself To Simply Add Fedora To L

Sep 1, 2011

I had Fedora on my laptop (as well as Windows Vista 32-bit) working fine but I wanted to add Ubuntu for some things, and I did, however something unexpected happened: When I go to boot the the computer, the GRUB 2 bootloader (from Ubuntu) showed ubuntu, and windows, but not fedora, so I can't get into fedora. From a knoppix disk, I determined that all my fedora stuff is there, and (to the best of my ability to determine) intact, but I can't access it. What can I do from Ubuntu or the GRUB 2 bootloader itself to simply add fedora to that list?

Fedora :: View Files In Windows XP Partition?

Dec 2, 2010

I'm trying to view my files in my windows XP partition and I tried the following with no success:

1. updated /etc/fstab to include the following line:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/win ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

2. tried this command to mount sda1:

mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/win (got an error message saying no such file or directory)

Here's what Fdisk shows:

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 581 8924 67023180 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 1 580 4658818+ b W95 FAT32
/dev/sda3 8925 8988 512000 83 Linux
/dev/sda4 8988 19458 84096000 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 8988 19458 84094976 8e Linux LVM

Since I'm pretty green at Linux, this is all I know how to do (for now). Isn't there a way for Fedora to auto mount these devices when it boots up?

Fedora :: What Is Version Of Bootloader Used In Fedora 13?

Oct 26, 2010

I have installed Fedora 13 live cd version. At first I want to say I like it very much. This will be my OS most likely. But I am new to Linux at all, and have some general questions.

1. What is the version of the bootloader used in my Fedora 13? Maybe there is a manual for it you can advice to read?
2. Updates. First time it asked me, there were 5 or so recommended packages, I have accepted. But the next time the lists of available updates shows me scary 3-digit number, this time I didn't accepted. Everything works fine so far , but maybe some 'core' things are worth installing/updating? I suppose it depends on the chipset, it is - Mobile Intel 945GME with Atom N270 (i686).

Fedora :: Ln Command For Link Creation To Folder On Windows Partition

Jan 16, 2010

I have a question about the ln command for link creation. I have both Windows and Linux partitions on my system. While I'm working on linux, sometimes I need to access the data stored on my windows partition. Yet, the access is provided through /media directory and I often, I have to click on several folders in order to access windows "My Documents" folder. So, in order to avoid this, I decided to create a link to "My Documents" folder directly from my $HOME directory.

Code:
$ mkdir /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments
$ ln -fs /media/disk/Users/dariyoosh/Documents/MyDocuments/* ./MyDocuments

The link was created without any problem and now I have a direct access to that folder just by a click. Yet, there is a problem. If I update any file of the windows MyDocuments folder within this linking directory, the file is actually updated on the windows partition, which is of course what I want to do. But If I decide to create a new file on the windows "MyDocuments" folder by using this linking folder, that is, /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments, the file is put actually on the linux partition instead of the windows MyDocuments folder. So, having created a directory linking to another directory, is there any way to proceed so that any file operation, in particular, creation, affects directly the linked directory?

Fedora Installation :: Format A Windows Partition So Can Easily Access It?

Jan 22, 2011

My old computer came with two disks, with Windows XP on one. I installed Fredora on the other.
I also resized the c: partition on the first disk and added a second partition which I formatted as fat32.
I then mounted that partition with its entry in /etc/fstab such that I could write to it as myself.

I have a new computer, 64 bit and running Windows 7, which I want to organize roughly the same way. I will install Fedora 14 on its seond disk. I've shrunk the c: partition under Windows using Disk Management. I want to create a 100 Gb D: partition on the same drive in the remaining space, and I want to be able to access both c: and D: for reading and writing by root and I want to be able to access the d: drive for reading and writing also by myself. Since it is a 64 bit machine, my choices for formatting the d: drive are HTFS or exFAT. Does it matter which I choose so that I can do what I want? How does Fedora treat exFAT?

Can anyone remind me which packages I need to add in order to be able to read NTFS file systems from Fedora? Can I also write to such a file system as root?

Can I write to such a file system as myself if I mount it properly?

Fedora :: Shrinking Disk Partition In Fedora Makes NTSF Partition Unusable

Aug 5, 2011

I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.

Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
