Fedora Hardware :: Ata3 Ata5 Which Are Real Disks Affected

Jun 17, 2011

I started to have a particular problem with my hard drivers, I can hear how they do a weird noise, like the one that a hard disk does when you start your PC, but it's very often once per second while I use my computer, if the computer is idle nothing happens. Sometimes it says that the error it is on ata3, sometimes it is on ata5

[code]...

What could be the problem? I have 4 SATA disks, in 2 of these disks I have in each one a partition of 250 GB and are mirror under mdadm as raid1. What about the names ata3 ata5 which are the real disks affected?

Hardware :: Test Hard Drive / Ghost Kernel: [ 3495.452698] Ata3.00: Configured For UDMA/33 Error?

May 16, 2011

I notice a bunch of weird what appear to be hard drive related error messages on my Linux server:

Code:
May 16 19:07:38 ghost kernel: [ 3495.452698] ata3.00: configured for UDMA/33
May 16 19:07:38 ghost kernel: [ 3495.452706] ata3: EH complete
May 16 19:07:40 ghost kernel: [ 3497.380640] ata3.00: configured for UDMA/33
May 16 19:07:40 ghost kernel: [ 3497.380648] ata3: EH complete
May 16 19:07:44 ghost kernel: [ 3501.732973] ata3.00: configured for UDMA/33

please use /proc/5073/oom_score_adj instead.

I don't know if this could be an indication that my hard drive(s) are about to fail. Can someone tell me if there's a way to test the drives or understand what's causing this error?

Ubuntu :: Graphical Artifacts - Read A Pdf-file - VLC GUI Itself Is Affected ?

Mar 26, 2011

I sometimes experience rather significant visual artifacts in Maverick. Some programs are more affected than others, but the problem is systemwide. It's most obvious when trying to read a pdf-file, as you can see in the attachments.

Interestingly, video never seems to be affected; even when the artifacts are so bad I can barely see what I'm doing, watching a movie in VLC works without problem (although the VLC GUI itself is affected).

The problem doesn't appear every session, but it is common. Approximately every third session is affected, and once the artifacts appear they remain until I restart the computer.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Headphone / Speaker Output Affected By Volume Control

Jun 25, 2010

Just switched my laptop from that other operating system to openSUSE11.2. Everything works great except for one odd little bug. Both my speakers and headphones have output, are affected by the volume control and it even detects when I plug in headphones and stops output to the speakers. However the moment I adjust the volume, output to my headphones stops, and my speakers start.

Debian Hardware :: Servers Which Contain SATA Disks And SAS Disks?

Feb 25, 2010

I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?

I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);

dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)

(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)

1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)

Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

Fedora :: Real World Sata3 (the 6G) Speeds?

Aug 21, 2011

On my machine I currently have 2 internal HD's - sata 3 & running in ahci mode. The bios confirms that they are running at 6G/s. For typical every day use, running apps & such, all seems fine & the machine seems speedy. But when I go to transfer large folders, (20G+) I'm only seeing 70M/s top speed, with 20 to 40 being the norm. (Shoot, I got 20M/s transferring to a usb 2.0 drive.) It doesn't matter if this is from partition to partition on the same drive (A or B) or between drives, or the direction.

So my question is, shouldn't this be giving a LOT faster speeds? Even if the drives ARE at the low end of the speed chart, per say? (WD CAVIAR BLUE 500G & 250G 7200RPM) This also doesn't matter what OS's I'm using either. Also, what ARE the the real world speeds on this? What are YOU ALL getting?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PCM Volume Not Affected By Master Volume Control With Alsa

Mar 7, 2011

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.

First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.

Fedora :: Rakarrack Real Time Audio User Group?

Mar 23, 2011

I'm using a fedora install mainly for audio work and have everything working well out of the box. My setup is simple:

-Direct cable from Guitar 1/4" > Sound Card input>Rakarrack Guitar Effects>Ardour>System Out
(Occasionally I put a synth/plugin like Zynaddsubfx or jackrack before or after rakarrack depending on what sound I'm going for)

-Jack for all audio transport with synthesizers

I have real time support with Jack and all other programs except Rakarrack. When I launch Rakarrack in the terminal, I get this message:

Code:

rakarrack 0.6.1 - Copyright (c) Josep Andreu - Ryan Billing - Douglas McClendon - Arnout Engelen
Try 'rakarrack --help' for command-line options.
Cannot lock down memory area (Cannot allocate memory)
Cannot use real-time scheduling (RR/15)(1: Operation not permitted)
AcquireRealTime error

However, running rakarrack in root does not display this output, and I assume it has no problem getting real-time scheduling in that case. I did some google searches but the only similar issues that I find are that people can't get RT support in jack except in my instance, I do have RT scheduling with jack, but for some reason I can't get it in rakarrack unless I'm root.

[Edit] I actually have to run jackd and rakarrack in root to get rakarrack to use real time scheduling. But, it isn't necessary for any other jack compatible program that I know of. I'm actually not getting any real time scheduling with any jack application, even though Jack is reporting to be running in Real Time. However, running everything in root fixes the issue even though I would prefer to not have to run as root.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Could Not Mount Disks After 15 Installation?

Jul 7, 2011

I`d like to know what happens when with the disks the we include in the installation process of Fedora 15.Obviously, the HD we choose to be the system is entirely formated and reconfigured. But what about the others?hat does happen to them? I`m asking this because I have included two brand new disks of 2 TB, one of them with 900.000 files and the other empty, both of them formated with ext4, and completely functional on Fedora 14.However, after the upgrade, in the very first Fedora 15 boot, these disks disapeared from "places", and could not be mounted even via terminal. Opening the Gnome Disk Utility, I found out they had been changed to VLM (instead of ext4) and that they also lost their original lable. I am starting to be concerned because all the data there was important to me.
