Ubuntu :: HDMI Sound Not Affected In Kmix?

Aug 8, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 but I installed KDE for a try(which I'm not liking by the way >_>)I can use the volume control in GNOME still and I can control it with PusleAudio but I can't use my keyboard buttons for Pulse, only KMix. In Kmix though I can't find a master channel for HDMI.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Get Kmix To Control Volume Through HDMI?

Sep 4, 2010

I have my Acer Revo R3610 PC connected to my LCD TV through HDMI. The sound works but I cannot control the volume from Kmix. I've added the IEC958 channel to the channels in Kmix but it doesn't provide a slider for it. Only a mute. The master volume slider has no effect at all. Is there any way of controlling the volume when connected through HDMI?

I ran the alsa diagnostics script (/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh) and uploaded it here.

Here is a quick summary of my Alsa version, sound module loaded and sound card details.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Sound Out Of HDMI?

Sep 22, 2010

Can someone provide me with the exact instructions I need to backtrace pulseaudio? I have a bug that a developer is asking me to do a backtrace and the instructions on the ubuntu site aren't very good. I tried exactly what it said and my problem is that it says to "run the program under gdb by doing

gdb pulseaudio 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-pulseaudio.txt

unfortunately pulseaudio isn't actually starting when I do this (I kill the program before I do this command, I also add the appropriate text file so pulse doesn't auto restart). Not sure what's going on but I'd appreciate any help as I can't get sound out of HDMI (I get it but it dies out fast).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Get Sound Through HDMI

May 20, 2010

I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.

I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.

I have read around without being able to find a solution.

Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).

I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.

how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?

Ubuntu :: HDMI Sound Is Unreliable?

Feb 8, 2011

I'm using an HDMI connection, and the sound connection is unreliable at best. When it works, it is working fine, then all of a sudden (maybe because it isn't being actively used for an extended period of time)the sound connection vanishes. When at System --> Preferences --> Sound --> Output I'm not seeing any option for the HDMI connection currently and the sound is not working. All the volumes are unmuted and I cannot use a softphone nor .....,nor do videos that I have watched in the past with sound have any.

Last night when this happened, I rebooted and the sound was working just fine then. In the past, I was able to get the computer to recognize the HDMI connection has sound by momentarily unplugging it, then plugging it back in. Though both last night and today that hasn't worked.When I bought my computer, I had Windows 7 installed on it. The same thing was happening then, though it was always fixed via disconnecting the HDMI connection briefly, so there is the possibility of it being a hard ware issue.

I've also tried turning off the device (a HDTV in this case) and turning it back on, but that only solved it once or twice, and neither last night nor today.This is also a 64 bit computer, should that be relevant. Using Ubuntu 10.10, and the only available update to my system at the moment is Google Chrome, which I will be updating after this post.I will be restarting my computer after that update and posting back here if the sound is working, especially with note of whats listed at the System --> Preferences --> Sound --> Output if there are any additional options (from memory, there was an HDMI choice there).

I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get HDMI Sound Reliably?

Jan 23, 2010

I can't get HDMI sound reliably when using Ubuntu. The strange thing is, if I repeatedly reboot the computer, eventually the sound will work. This can take anything up to 10 reboots. Once working, it will keep on working as long as the machine is not rebooted or shut down. HDMI sound works fine under Windows.

aplay -l will only list the Intel (analogue and S/PDIF) hardware, not the Nvidia, even when it is working. Selecting between analogue and digital output under Sound Preferences has no effect on the HDMI either way.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound On HDMI ATI 3000?

Video is ok, but never any sound. I went through and made sure the HDMI is selected as the audio device and I upgraded to the latest driver binary.

HDMI sound works without the ATI proprietary driver installed, but the needed resolution is not available and the picture overlaps the edges on my 32" LCD. At least I know it is not a hardware issue. ALSA is loaded and selected as the sound manager, but the volume controls don't appear in the ALSA slider console.

I tested the cable and display on another computer. I am using a new Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-SH2, it is the integrated video.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound On HDMI Channel

Jul 14, 2010

I was hoping that upgrading to 10.04 would fix my problems with sound and HDMI but alas it doesn't. I have an HP dv7 that I wish connect via an HDMI cable to my HDTV and play things like Hulu, Boxee, etc. with the sound coming out of my home theater system. I know that the hardware is capable of doing this because I have Windows 7 installed in a dual boot and it has no problems with pumping sound down the HDMI channel.

I've upgraded to Alsa 1.0.23 freshly compiled. With 1.0.23 I see HDMI settings in Pulse Audio Volume Control. However if I start say VLC and play a video, check pavucontrol and make sure the Playback is set to the HDMI channel. I can hook up the HDMI cable and I can see the video playing - but no audio. I've been in and out of all kinds of things like alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer, sound preferences, etc. and I've toggled things on and off in an attempt to get HDMI sound working but nothing works.

In alsamixer if I hit f6 I see my 0 card as HDA Intel and my 1 card as NDA NVidia. If I select NVidia I see only S/PDIF, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 3. I can only mute or unmute these. I've tried both - nothing works. Let me know what sort of output/info you need and I'll post it. Here's some info I've seen others post:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: GT240 No Sound Via HDMI?

I'm having a bit of trouble getting sound to work over HDMI with my GT240 card. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) on kernel 2.6.35-23. I can get sound over HDMI by using the following commands:

Code:

Code:

aplay -Dplughw:0,7 track06.mp3

However, I get no sound from normal applications (Totem, Rhythmbox, flash, etc). Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound Output Over HDMI On 10.10 (ION 2)

Feb 28, 2011

I just bought a powerful Sapphire nettop HD Mini-pc as shown here : [URL]

Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically :
- installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD
- launch all update of the OS
- installed Nvidia closed driver
- update alsamixer to 1.0.23

So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Over HDMI With ION2?

Mar 13, 2011

I have a Giada Slim-N20 running XBMC-Live 10.1 (Ubuntu v.10.04.1). It is hooked up by HDMI to my two-speaker TV. I don't think XBMC is my problem, however. Out of the box, XBMC supports sound over HDMI (if you tell it to use it), but when I try to run ZSNES, I only get sound through the headphone jack on the side. Now, the one problem with XBMC is that menu sounds go through the default device (i.e. the headphone jack) rather than the device selected in its settings (in my case, the HDMI port). In order to fix that problem, my .asoundrc looks like this:

Code:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:1,3"
}
}

Unfortunately, this does not fix ZSNES for some reason. Even worse, I no longer get sound through the headphone jack. What does fix ZSNES, however, is this strange hack that has been making the rounds on the XBMC forums. First, you download a modified version of HDA-Intel.conf found here. It appears to route everything through pcm.!remap-surround71. Then, you use this asound.conf:

Code:

pcm.!hdmi-remap {
type asym
playback.pcm {

[code]....

This almost fixes everything. Unfortunately, when I try playing a video with AC3/Dolby Digital, I get a screechy, garbled mess. Videos with mp3 and DTS work fine, however. what the asound files or the modified HDA-Intel.conf are trying to do. My guess is that something with the 7.1 mapping is screwing up AC3. And my hunch is that such a hack is way too complicated just to tell ZSNES to use the HDMI port. And, yes, ZSNES is instructed to use SDL or ALSA (neither appears to make a difference).
