Nov 20, 2010I recently forced a reset on my applications menu, this system has been updated since at least Intrepid all the way through to Maverick and so I have decided to start having a bit of a clean up. Having deleted my ~/.config/menus directory and logged out/in, I noticed that I now have a menu for 'Other' within my applications menu, there must be around 200 entries in there, detailing every app I have ever installed through wine (whether they are still installed or not) along with a few others (VMWare player for one example).
Where are the files located that the computer probes to regenerate this menu? I'd like to clear the list as much as possible as the same list gets in the way when choosing what program a file should be opened with (it's far easier to choose from a list of currently installed apps than a list of 300 or so possibly installed apps).

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu
Dec 16, 2010I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.

Dec 21, 2010I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

Jul 28, 2009I am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

# dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr+part.bin bs=512 count=1
On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

# grub-install --root-directory=/boot hd0
reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

May 28, 2011I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.

Sep 3, 2011I'm a KDE fan, but I installed GNOME 3 to give it a test drive. I like some aspects, but I don't care for all the clutter in the menu, in the form of KDE apps that duplicate the functions of native GNOME apps. So I just opened alacarte and un-checked all those KDE apps. Simple, cleaned up the menu beautifully. Then I booted into my main environment, right-clicked on my launcher to open its editor and delete the GNOME apps. All of my KDE apps were gone!
Deleting GNOME apps from KDE works fine: They stay gone in KDE but they're still present in GNOME. The reverse is not true. Is there a better way than what I tried? Besides installing a GNOME distro in a vbox; I tried that and found it too sluggish. I could also replicate a menu structure on a dock (Cairo), but I thought I'd check with the experts first in case there's a less clunky approach.

I am working with distro one and a half year now (of course I was doing updates all this period) The last twenty dates if I have a quite heavy session I can not log off (or shutdown the computer) I even tried from konsole qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer logout 0 0 0
even that did not work (well right now I can not launch any new apps from kde, but I still work with the already running).

Mar 21, 2010I have opensuse 11.2 64 bit with the latest Nvidia drivers on a Gnome desktop; out of the box compiz 7.8 worked great. I had no intention of upgrading but I did with the upgrade to 8.4. Everything upgraded fine except I lost my menu bars on all screens when they were opened. I downgraded back down to 7.8 and still the same issue. Right now I have no compiz on so I can have have my menu bars. There is something I must be missing when I installed or reinstalled or upgraded compiz. I would like to get an original compiz setup that a fresh install gives.

Nov 15, 2010I normally run 11.3 with the desktop "folder view" but thought I would try something different - I think it was the search and launch view. After playing with it for a while I wanted to change back but found that right clicking on the desktop no longer launches the usual menu. If I change to "netbook form" rather than desktop, the menu is there, but even rebooting has not fixed the problem.
