Fedora Hardware :: F13 Cannot Recognize Newly Increased RAM Sticks

Nov 23, 2010

I installed F13 on a few ACER desktops with 4 GB ram. Recently I tried to upgrade the RAM to 8 GB. But after I plugged in the extra two 2GB ram sticks inside, the system still feels 4 GB. I had double checked with ACER and confirmed that 8 GB is supported by the motherboard. Is there any shortcuts to let the system recognize all the 8GB ram rather than reinstall the whole system.

Ubuntu :: Admin Privileges - Permission Denied Error

May 11, 2010

I'm having a permissions problem with Ubuntu and apache. There are two users, I'll just call them A and B. All of the files belong to A and group root. I'm logged in as B and I have admin privileges. My website is working just fine but when I create a directory in the web root, change the owner to A on the directory and all files I still get a Permission Denied error when I try to access it from the web. I've also set permissions to rxwr-xr-x on the directory and all the files. So I don't understand what's going on. Why am I still getting a permission denied error?

Software :: Software Raid Not Showing Increased I/O Throughput On Fedora 12?

Mar 27, 2010

I have implemented level 5 software raid (of 4 partitions on a SINGLE external hard disk). Implementing it on a single hard disk doesn't serve much purpose, I understand, but I did it for demonstration purpose only. The problem is when I read from the raid device into my laptop's hard disk, the time taken to transfer a 900 MB file is about 4 minutes (4 GB RAM) whereas the rime taken to transfer it from a pen drive is 43 seconds. Isn't raid supposed to work faster. However, the write to the raid device is faster than to a pendrive. Shouldn't it be taking data in parallel from the 3 partitions (as even a single disk has multiple heads) ?

Fedora :: Need Administrative Privileges FC14

Jun 18, 2011

I am new to this O/S. I have tried Mint and Ubuntu. There are some problems I would like to work out by myself before I take short-cuts, as if.I have tried to install codecs for my o/s media player and get a reply from computer "xxxx does not have sudoer rights, you will be reported."I tried to get sudoer rights and was told I had to have administrator rights first. To get administrator rights I needed sudoer rights. I decided to come to forums to ask and this is my first post.

Is there a danger in getting administrative rights? If so, I would still rather like to face the danger than not be able to play music. And how do I get real superuser rights? My root account is localhost.localdomain and my login account is XXXX. I would have access to everything rather than have a warning that the administration is receiving reports of my activity. Might anyone have help?

Software :: NTP Error - "Failed To Drop Root Privileges"

Jun 5, 2010

I encountered an issue after installing NTP on a VM running CentOS 5.5. (I installed it using the standard "yum install ntp".) When I attempted to start NTP, it would fail to sync with the NTP servers, but seemed to start ok. If I checked its status, though, I would see that there was a dead PID file in /var/run, and that it wasn't actually running. Checking the /var/log/messages file, I would see this each time I attempted to start it.

CentOS 5 :: Increased Disk Space Not Reflected

May 11, 2011

I am running Centos 5.5 in vmware and recently had to increase my disk space from 20GB to 40GB. I understand that in linux, the increased disk space is not automatically reflected but as I am new to this topic, I am not sure how I can go about doing this. how to see what's the available space and how I can partition(?) this.

For your reference:

[root@localhost ~]# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 42.9 GB, 42949672960 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 5221 cylinders

Fedora Networking :: Samba Not Working On 15 - Read / Write Privileges

Jun 19, 2011

i have a windows xp machine with filesharing enabled and the shares set up and ready to go i have a laptop on which i did a fresh install of fedora 15 with samba and all the necessary packages to make the fedora machine a samba client to the windows machine.

my problem is that when i go into nautilus and click on the network tab it shows nothing not one single computer...the fedora machine doesnt even show up.....i have done all the tests i can think of and confirmed that the smb service is running, the nmb service is running, samba is allowed thru the firewall and all the computers are in the same workgroup..yet neither one can see each other even more frustrating is when i go to mount a windows share thru the terminal it shows a successful mount (as i type in the command hit enter and recieve no errors) BUT when i go into the mount directory and open the new directory i made for the samba share it shows nothing there not even when i go into the windows machine and add a file to the shared folder...PLUS for some strange reason the /mnt directory already had two empty files called "home" and "boot" already in it i have no clue what thats about but ok, then on the windows side i go into "network places" and click on "show workgroup computers" and the windows machine will show up but not the fedora machine.

these are the commands i have used to install and get samba working- "yum install samba system-config-samba samba-client cifs-utils" "service smb start" anyway until i can figure this out i have decided to start from scratch and erase samba from the machine completely and i am hoping that maybe some one can read all this and come up with some ideas...maybe there is just something i forgot when i was setting this up yesterday its possible i just went to fast and skipped a step again all i want is the fedora 15 machine to just be a samba client with read/write priviledeges

Debian Multimedia :: When Video Gets Rendered Into MP4 It Comes Out At Increased Speed

Jul 28, 2015

Using Openshot, flowblade, or Kdenlive, when video gets rendered into mp4, it comes out at increased speed, both audio and video (seems like double speed but could be a different ratio)

When I play the exported mp4 with VLC for example, it shows the proper video length, not shortened. The video plays at high speed and for the second half of the video it just shows the last frame of the video until it runs out of time.

I have used Openshot extensively and have never had this problem, so I installed all the other video editors I could, and the problem persists (pitivi has a dependency problem so I haven't been able to use it).

I have tried several video players as well, all doing the same (VLC and Smplayer)

I am running Debian stable jessie, 64 bit, xfce

Code: Select allcpu:
