Fedora :: Corrupt RPM DB Or Yum Not Working Correctly?
Mar 3, 2010
About two days ago, Yum started complaining about having a corrupt RPM db, so I hit google and looked up the procedures for rebuilding the DB, and I think I broke it more than fixed it. Now, when I issue a
Code:
root@BLACKHEARTED ~# yum -y update
Traceback (most recent call last):

After upgrading my Sony VAIO from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13 my NFS shares don't seem to be working correctly. First of all, mounting them via /etc/fstab is quite slow now. More importantly, When I transfer files from my laptop client to my NFS share, the owner/group on the client become "nobody". However, on the NFS server, they are both "root". I am using a script containing "cp" commands to perform backups of certain directories, retaining original owner/group info. Since the Fedora 13 upgrade, the script complains with each file that it was unable to preserve the information, and the end of the line always contains "Invalid argument".
As a last resort, I upgraded the 'server' (a 64 bit version) from Fedora 12 to Fedora 13. There has been no improvement.
My DVD-ROM drive seems to have issues under Fedora 15.This is the "normal" spin with GNOME3, all updates have been installed.First off, the drive seems to get "stuck" will not eject any media once inserted.Occaisionally, if I just keep pressing the eject button, the media tray will jump out, but then will immediately pull itself back in without any interaction from me.Second issue: video DVDs do not mount. It does not seem to matter if libdvdcss is installed or not. When a DVD video disc is inserted, the DVD drive completely disappears from Nautilus' Computer window. Once I eject the DVD (after pressing eject 50 times) the drive comes back to the Computer window. The drive is a Plextor DVD-RW PX-755SA connected via SATAI have tried using either regular IDE or AHCI configuration in the BIOS for it, no change either way.The drive works fine under Ubuntu and OpenSUSE, but I like F15 better and would like to get this fixed.
The Fedora 14 (and 13) pwc Philips Webcam Driver.is only supporting 160x120 resolution (and nothing higher such as 640x480). Also not supporting some other things correctly, I suspect.I say so having tested multiple web camera software and either they don't work (because they have no setting for low res) or they do work if settable to low res., but not for any higher res.I also have a working setpwc tool which shows the driver does not support framerate resetting.I have a Toucam and Toucam Pro - same for both. Also these units worked fine under Fedora 11, and under earlier versions even Red Hat 4.But I usually got the latest pwc from Saillaird.org and compiled it to get full support but there are no more current sources there anymore, and the older ones don't compile. But as I am saying under F11 it was fully correct, now under F13 and 14 it is broken.
Just installed the LXDE spin of 13 onto my acer aspire netbook. Couldn't make a usb boot stick, finally succeeded with an external card reader and unetbootin. Anyway, GXine isn't working, though it says its configured correctly. I'm very new to fedora and linux in general, played a bit with ubuntu 9.10.
What it does is, if you do something to change anything on the screen, for example, highlighting text, or switching from one tab/menu in an application to another. The screen doesn't show the change. The only way to SEE the change is to do something else to the screen, like grabbing and moving the application around, or scrolling the page of a website, etc. If you don't do that, you won't see what's really on the screen, but rather what WAS on the screen.
Another example:
*) say you have an application open with 3 tabs: tab1, tab2, and tab3. *) Switch from tab1 to tab2 and you see no change on the screen. *) Switch from tab2 to tab3 and you see tab 2 on the screen, NOT tab 3. *) Switch from tab3 to tab 2 and you see tab3 on the screen, and NOT tab2.
Or, if you're typing in this box to make a post, and you hit ctrl+a to select all, you see no change. If you click in the box to deselect all, then it looks like you've selected all text still. The only way to see what's currently on the screen is to scroll the text box or page just a bit, or, if you're using an application, then you'd have to move it around on the screen a bit.
As i've said, the nVidia drivers are installed and working, as well as compiz, etc.
Code: [=v=]$ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 Northbridge only single slot PCI-e GFX Hydra part (rev 02) 00:02.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD890 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port B)

Also, i did BOTH the dracut thing, and the extra kernel paramter in the grub.conf. So, nouveau is blacklisted. Oddly enough though, i do NOT have this problem when using the nouveau driver...
Also, fwiw, i think that i should mention that i'm not using the "Desktop Settings > Enable Desktop Effects" method, because i always seem to have problems with getting certain features to work, like the background for the cube skydome, etc. How i do it is that i install a package called compiz-manager, and i have it set to run at session start. This makes all of the compiz features work fine. One thing that i've noticed though, is that on my other workstation, i haven't set that up yet, and it seems that is is NOT having the same issue. While compiz-manager was running, i tried to use the "desktop settings" method, and it crapped out and reverted back to the old school desktop. I then tried it again, and it reloaded compiz, and there is no screen update issues now. So it seems that you have to have both of them running in order to get all of the compiz options to work, and not have the screen refresh issue?
I am having this strange issue in 10.04. Some USB items work fine while others are not being seen or loading at all. I am using a 24 port powered usb hub. Items that work are:
keyboard mouse 2nd gen iPod Shuffle Sony MP3 player Amazon Kindle 3 do not work: iPod Classic B&N Nook
i can't navigate through the tabs in firefox with my mouse, i cant use the address bar to navigate anywhere by key or click, my google search toolbar is acting the same way. i just updated everything after putting in the flashplugin-installer code.. i'm clueless since i know zilch about this system and im still stumbling through baby steps.
I just got a new headset ("Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset")to use with some games I play but I can't seem to get it working properly. I've tested it with both Heroes of Newerth and Teamspeak 3 (Linux clients for both of them) and I get the exact same problem in both - it seems to detect the microphone and sound from it, but intermittently. When I test it, people can hear my voice but it drops in and out about every half second (So "Hello how are you" sounds like "He-- ho- -re yo-").On the other hand if I go into the sound recorder everything works fine. But the fact that it's exactly the same problem in both of those other programs suggests to me that it's a problem with the way I have my input drivers/settings set up in Ubuntu but I have no idea how to troubleshoot that. Any suggestions? I can post logs or something but I don't know what to post (I'm still pretty new to Linux).
I just created a repository for CentOS 5.3 and 5.4 on my webserver for the network to use. I followed the steps listed here: [URL] All went well up until testing out the repository. Here is the output of "yum update"
[root@titan yum.repos.d]# yum update Loaded plugins: downloadonly, fastestmirror, priorities Repository base is listed more than once in the configuration Repository extras is listed more than once in the configuration
[Code].....
I'm unsure as to why yum is looking in the "5" directory instead of "5.3" or "5.4" and it looks like that is the only issue. It seems as though $releasever is returning 5 instead of the current 5.3 that this system is on.
Vuze downloaded an update, and now everytime I use it keeps telling me to re start for the update to have an effect. When I re start, same thing happens again tells me it needs to restart. I'm using Gnome and openSUSE 11.3. I checked older posts for a solution it seems this has happened before. Do I just wait for a new version to come out of the repos?
I recently installed SuSE 11.4 (kernel 2.6.37.6-0) and it all works very nicely EXCEPT for the KDM login. I am using kde 4.6.0 and have the latest updates for 11.4 installed and at install time, I left the automatic Login box checked which works ok. However, when I go to the 'Personal Settings - configure desktop' and change the Login - convenience' to UNcheck the Auto login box, it does not change the Login action - I stlll login (without a login name and password screen appearing). I have looked at the file - /usr/share/kde/config and the kdmrc file does change to read 'autologin' true (or false) when I make the changes in the configure desktop GUI, but this has no effect on my actual ability to 'login' automatically all the time!
I just built my PC and loaded ubuntu on it. When the ubuntu desktop comes up everything looks ok. but when I click on any of the drop down menus, or anything else for that matter, the computer freezes immediately. I,ve tried copying the iso boot file to a new cd and reloading ubuntu but the problem remains. I've also tried removing one of the two ram sticks but again, the problem remains.

Has anyone noticed with the new 10.4 release and firefox 3.6.3, that flash is not working correctly? Videos do play fine but I have noticed that pausing the video, replaying the video, or even skipping around in the video does not work. I may try downgrading firefox and see if it works.
I'm using Ubunbtu 10.04 with Empathy 2.30.2 and Today I needed to check the history of conversations and I noticed that are not properly stored. The program keeps only a small part of discussions that were actually much longer.
I have been unable to get my sound in Ubuntu working correctly. I have followed ALL the steps in the Community SoundTroubleshooting page, the Sound Solutions Guide forum post, and the Ubuntu Wiki, among many other troubleshooting instructions and forum posts. I've even completely purging ALL my sound-related software and reinstalling, but no luck. The problem I've been having is one that seems to plague many Ubuntu users, but whose solution seems to be relatively undocumented, if it exists. That is, the sound often seems to stop working when a continuous audio stream is active or when a video stream is running (flash, mpeg, ogg, you name it). This is even apparent in the Ubuntu startup, where the default startup theme is often choppy on load (though I attribute this particular instance to be due to high CPU usage on startup.)
I've spent a LOT of meticulous time trying to figure out EXACTLY what is causing it, and I'm only taking to these forums after MONTHS of research and failed investigation. It doesn't necessarily seem to be a CPU-activity related error, as the sound often will cut out just playing MP3 or WAV files with almost no CPU usage. On the other hand, it doesn't really seem to be a specific software-related error, as uninstalling PulseAudio or reinstalling ALSA seems to have little-to-no effect on the problem. To date, no program has been immune from this error.....
I had my Lenovo T60 laptop working on Ubuntu 10.10 with visual effects and everything except for one thing the screen would flicker constantly I began to fiddle around with the Xserver trying to fix the flickering but I somehow regressed and am now unable to use visual effects. The Xserver fails to load any devices when I try to start it. Included is a copy of my xorg.conf file.

doesn't write the log in the Desktop folder? It's written exactly like that in the Ubuntu startup program control panel and according to the ps command I understand it's correctly running:
$ ps aux | grep freepopsd shocker 1676 0.0 0.1 227264 9128 ? S 13:22 0:00 /usr/bin/freepopsd -vv > /home/shocker/Desktop/Freepopsd.log
I am having issues maximizing windows/applications on triple monitor setup. I would like to maximize wine, folder explorer, media players, and etc to one screen, instead of across both, which it is currently doing that. Using Separate X [xinerama] + twinview, but I have also tried without xinerama + twinview. When maximizing applications and such, it will only maximizes across both of the monitors in the twinview setup, not the separate X on the left. The separate x has maximizing working to that one screen. I have tried to add xorg tweets, but that's not working, and they are currently in my xorg post below. I had maximizing to one screen working perfectly with dual monitor setup. :S And, I am currently getting an error about " Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0""
The following Xorgs show the differences, I guess if there is one between maximizing correctly to one screen.
Triple Monitor setup, maximizing across both twinview monitors, not preferred:

Starting today I cannot log into [URL] on Linux. Whenever I try to login, it just takes forever and then either Chrome or Firefox tell me that perhaps the site no longer exists. It works perfectly fine on Windows. Strangely it also does not work on my Roku box and is working sporadically on my PS3. I would think it was my ISP or my router if it wasn't working perfectly fine on Windows.
I AM NOT TRYING TO WATCH NETFLIX ON LINUX. I know that doesn't work. I'm just trying to update my queue. I'm having this problem both on Fedora and Ubuntu (latest stable releases on both). I know it's not just loading from cache on my Windows machine because I'm going to pages that I have never been to and it's working just fine. Now, I have not tried signing out and in because then I'll be up a creak. OK, I installed another browser on my Windows computer and I'm able to sign into Netflix just fine. So it's not a sign-in issue.
WHY DOES THIS WORK ON WINDOWS? It's the same browsers - Chrome and Firefox on Linux and Windows and the same network.
ALSO, flickr is not working correctly - I cannot make any comments in the discussions (but can on photos which is ajax-y).
update: also checked a Linux computer using Linux Mint that hasn't been turned on in 2 months. I know it was able to access Netflix back then. Nothing has been changed - not even updates. It also cannot access Netflix. Either taking forever to load [URL] or when trying to login.
via looking in Konqueror, I saw it's trying to go [URL] and that's what makes it so that I cannot connect to [URL] if it considers me to be signed in. And here's what Konqueror said:
The requested operation could not be completed Connection to Server Closed Unexpectedly Details of the Request: URL: http://movies.netflix.com Protocol: http Date and Time: Thursday, February 24, 2011 22:56
I attempt to browse to 10.67.0.189. This is a Brocade 4100 SAN switch management interface and is apparently a web application. This works in Windows IE. It dose not run in Linux Redhat v5 . #uname -a Linux2.6.18-194.el5 #1 SMP i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux The java install is the latest as is jrel and test good. firefox is vs 3.0.19
javaws location is #ls -l /usr/local/jre1.6.0_19/javaws/javaws -> ../bin/javaws.
The error is "switchExplorer_installed.html which is a: JNLP file from: http://10.67.0.189 What should firefox do with this file? options are open or save. I tried both. When I select open I get a line onthe browse window "6.2.0 Web tools 10.67.0.189.
I have a cron job that runs overnight for a rsync script that backups my home directory to a external hard disk that is connected to the computer via usb 2.0. I also output the results to a log and follow it via tail -f command from a terminal, to monitor it.
Here is the script: Code: #!/bin/bash # backup data on a daily basis via rsync and a cron job echo echo backup started `date` >>/home/user/scripts/backup/backuplog echo rsync -avh /home/user/ /media/Linux_ext3/ echo echo backup complete `date` >>/home/user/scripts/backup/backuplog echo echo disk used: `du -csh /media/Linux_ext3` >>/home/user/scripts/backup/backuplog echo echo disk free: `df -h /media/Linux_ext3` >>/home/user/scripts/backup/backuplog echo
Two things - The rsync is doing a complete mirror of my home directory to the usb drive. For example, say I have a .txt file at the root of /home/user. It gets copied over. However I delete the .txt file the next day and if I go to /media/Linux_ext3/, the .txt file is still there. I was always under the impression that rsync would mirror the two directories, correct? -For my log, I think it is creating an entry, I think, for each file. Again, was under the impression that rsync would only copy over files that have be updated, correct?
I've been having problems with my hdmi output not working since I first installed debian on my laptop(probably 2 years now). The reason the output wasn't working is because I can't turn my onboard graphics off in my bios. So I had a bright idea, why don't I just blacklist the i915 driver?
So I did, I updated the initramfs and restarted my computer. It started up showed the startup sequence on my laptop screen, my dell monitor (vga output) and on the tv (hdmi output) but then the start up sequence froze on the hdmi output while the other 2 screens continued to work. I do lspci -v and the i915 driver still shows up for the vga controller.
I don't have the nvidia drivers setup and I don't have an xorg.conf setup at the moment because I get the no screens error when I do. What should I do?
previous stuff : [URL] .... <--- I have no clue how I got the hdmi output working when I posted that thread.
I installed 11.4 and it seems to be working fine. To run few windows application I need WINE. I installed WINE using YAST Software Manager. But when I install application in WINE it's not working correctly. The same application is working fine in MINT/WINE.
I have a fresh install, everythings working great, just trying to get my vhosts working, i set them up in yast, but all the requests just go to the second vhost.
I have the following command:ssh $USER@$HOST "ls /ops/pkg/ec/`grep "PKRTS" /ops/pkg/ec | awk '{print $1}'`* > /tmp/tmp_file"What the above SHOULD do..is, ssh to the host then execute the command. The command should first execute the grep and awk between the back ticks, and generate a file name, then ls using that filename* and write that data to a temp file. However, it executes the grep and awk before even SSH'ing and the command that goes to the server is simply an "ls /ops/pkg/ec/* > /tmp/tmp_file" since the grep and awk return nothing on the local machine.
i am running ubuntu 9.10 reasonably fresh install and i need to add a second user. the gui tool for that in ubuntu is not functioning correctly if i open it using the gui it does not ask me for the root password like the instructions say its supposed too and if i force it to take root from terminal with sudo users-admin then i can add a user but the account works exactly once and then it becomes broken and is inaccessible i have 2 dead accounts on my computer now from playing with it trying to get it to work.....
