Fedora :: Cannot Author Optical Disk In F13 KDE
Jun 24, 2010
I generally use Nero Linux for my optical disk authorization needs. But after installing Fedora I've noticed that Nero is not writing data in disks. It tried to make an .nrg image of the data in my hard disk. Then I tried k3b but seeing this error message:
MP3 Audio Decoder plugin not found.
K3b could not load or find the MP3 decoder plugin. This means that you will not be able to create Audio CDs from MP3 files. Many Linux distributions do not include MP3 support for legal reasons.
Solution: To enable MP3 support, please install the MAD MP3 decoding library as well as the K3b MAD MP3 decoder plugin (the latter may already be installed but not functional due to the missing libmad). Some distributions allow installation of MP3 support via an online update tool. Installed libmad without success........

I need information about the capabilities and state of the disk...specifically, if it's rewritable (capability) and if it's currently blank (state). Currently, I'm using the output of hal-device to give me that information. The problem is, hald doesn't update the information in response to a burn event... this is a problem, because if a burn a blank disc, hal-device still lists it as blank...and if I blank a disk, hal still lists it as non-blank.
Is there a method to force HAL to update a device, or is there a way to query the disk/drive directly to find out if the disk is blank and rewritable? Or even a method to determine if a disk is blank or not? Additionally, this is for a CD-burning application... so I'm intentionally trying to avoid anything hacky like ejecting the CD and reinserting it... anything of that nature.

I am trying to mount a a Magneto Optical WORM drive, mechanically it is a 2.6 Gb, 1024 Bytes/Sector, 5.25", Verbatim Media, The disk was created under OS-2.
I am using CentOS 5, and have tried mounting the disk as msdos and as vfat and get superblock errors among others.
what filesystem type did OS-2 use? is there an add on to CentOS that will support the filesystem?

I dont know when k3b stopped working but have just gone to burn a disk and when opening it tells me
Quote: No optical drive found. K3b did not find any optical device in your system. Solution: Make sure HAL daemon is running, it is used by K3b for finding devices.
I can boot from cd and can mount cds from within Slackware but for some reason k3b insists that i don't have a drive.

I have an external CD/DVD usb drive and as soon as I insert a disk (I've tried both CD and DVD), the drive icon disappears (unmounts?).I thought it was a bus power issue because it is a mini laptop (Asus Eee PC). This small/slim external drive has two USB cables, one for power and one for power/data. So, I plugged the power cable into my nearby Windows desktop computer and just the power/data into the Ubuntu PC.

I am trying to access a Magneto Optical disk written under OS/2 hpfs filesystem. I cannot locate a dang thing about support of CentOS for OS/2. I found a module for Linux OS/2 support that dated back to 1993, have no idea how to compile it, used alien to create an RPM package, said compiled succesfully, still can't mount the drive (/dev/sdb) with filesystem type -t hpfs. Can anyone out there help me, or does CentOS just not do this?

I currently have the following:-
Optical Out from my TV into the SPDIF / Optical In on my PC
Optical Out from my PC into my Sony 5.1 Theatre Kit
The audio from the PC comes through ok when listening to music and movies. But unfortunately I can figure out how to enable the audio passthrough from my Tv so that the audio comes out of my theatre kit. In Sound Preferences, the hardware is set to 1 Output / 1 Input [Digital Stereo (IEC95 Output + Digital Stereo (IEC95 Input]. When I click on the audio tab, the Input Volume is at 100% and the Input Level is moving in conjunction with the audio coming from the Tv.
I saw it mentioned in another thread to install Gnome Alsa Mixer which I've done, it seeems to identify the audio chipset as Realtek ALC882, the motherboard is an Abit AB9 Pro. Hopefully I'm missing some config somewhere or there a box I should be ticking but I just can't find it.

I have a strange problem with my DVD player. The problem: My device seems not to read any CD (it does read DVDs). Prologue: On a previous installation I had the same problem. But after messing up with that system I made a re-install, and the problem was gone. So I wasn't concerned about the problem any longer. That would be fine, but recently I had to make a new re-install to have space for windows. (I know, I'm a sinful man) But now the problem is there again. And it even is there under windows.
Question: In how far is the hardware damaged or is it a software problem since it once worked? Hardware data:
-Systems: Fedora 12 & Vista
-Laptop: Dell Studio 1555
-Drive: Optiarc Model: DVD+-RW AD-7640S Rev: HD18
What I have been doing to fix the problem:
-I made an update of the firmware and bios with the files provided by dell
-cleaned the lenses (with a clean disc)
-checked log files (both windows and linux)
After setting udev to debug logging I received this

I use software where I have to edit a text file in order to get my custom needs from it. Problem is that when the author puts out an update, it always overwrites my changes and I have to spend hours trying to compare the file, re-edit my changes back in, etc. This happens sometimes as often as once per month.
I've wondered if there might be a linux tool or commands which would look through the new file, then at my old file, changing only the text which already exists while not breaking anything else. Most software authors seem to know how to do this but since mine doesn't, how can I accomplish this on my own?

I am getting ready to go to FC14. Yesterday I downloaded both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions -dvd iso. When I tried to burn the images with K3B I got the message 'No Optical drvice found'. Shut off my PC and rebooted this morning. The first thing I did was I tried to burn the 32 bit version with K3B. It worked. Went off and installed it - no problem. I came back to burn the 64 bit version. K3B says "No optical drive found'. K3b (and/or Fedora) lost connection with my optical drives - a DVD-Writer and DVD reader. I have put cds into the drives and tried to open the cds with File Browser with no luck.
Some pertinent data:
[root@Vince vince]# cat /etc/fstab
#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Mon Aug 17 15:12:43 2009
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or vol_id(8) for more info
[Code].....
I looked in messages and found no references after the successful burning of the 32 bit dvd. Nothing to indicate why Fedora lost contact with the dvd writer. What else is needed to fix this? I think that if I reboot, I will have access to both drives again. If that happens, I will burn the 64 bit iso and look into updating my system.

I had some help via email from someone drafting my CV into the correct table format with open office. It's a .pdf file but now unfortunately lists the author in the document tab of properties as that person.
Is there anyway to change it to my own name, and also how do I 'secure' the document so that it's not easy for people viewing it to copy and paste, I've heard this is why many people now use .pdf for their CVs/rsums?

Case 1:
documentclass{article}
author{Name}
date{}
itle{Title}
Begin{document}
maketitle
Text to be inputted
end{document}
Case 2:

I have a FLAC file with 24-bit samples instead of 16 bits. I could use the flac linux command to obtain a WAVE file and then cdrecord to burn the audio CD. Unfortunately, cdrecord requires 16-bit digital audio as input. Is there a program able to author 24-bit audio CDs either from a FLAC file or from a WAVE file?

my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:
Code:
VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev dm-0
The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

S.M.A.R.T.tells me my primary fedora drive has lots of bad blocks,so I ordered a used identical drive from ebay.I want to do the very basic process of making a full backup of my existing drive - so as to replace it with a more or less identical replacement. Logically identical - not necewsarily sector to sector identical.im not literate in unix and its children - and seem to find a plethora of descriptinos of how to do what I want to do. which is
1. format the drive - what you may call low level format - ie op sys independent.
2. create a partition system compatible with my existing disk.
3. copy everything from my existing disk to the new disk.
4. put existing disk on the shelf as a backup and start to use new disk.

My sound card is an HT Omega Striker, and it worked fine with 9.04. I did a fresh install of 10.04 and I can't get optical/SPDIF/IEC958/whatever to work. I only use the optical out (mostly with Rythmbox, if that matters). I know I had to enable IEC958(?) on 9.04 to get it working, but that didn't work this time around. The sound card is found fine, so this is really pissing me off.
