Fedora :: Allowing A Service To Interact With Desktop?

May 27, 2010

I'm using the Java Service Wrapper to create a service in Linux. This Java Application has no main GUI, but if certain error message occur then it displays a warning box allowing the user to know. If I log into root and install the application everything works fine. But, if I log into a none root user graphically and then do a su - to get to root the service will not start. This is the command I'm using inside the service (/etc/init.d/rc.d/backup) to start the application

Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
/home/pulse/backups/bin/backup start -Djava.awt.headless=true

If I take out the "export DISPLAY=:0.0" the service will start fine, but when an error occurs the warning box doesn't pop up.

Fedora Hardware :: Not Allowing To Enable Desktop Effects

Oct 26, 2010

I used the rpmfusion nvidia drivers for my Fedora installation up until a day ago when all of sudden my display turned black after an update. Also, I am using a sony laptop with Nvidia GT230M (with proprietary drivers there are some huge problems like not detecting display, i had to use custom edid file to get it working). After fresh install, things just worked and everything is fine. But the only problem is it is not letting me enable Desktop Effects. I am very much used to Scale to switch my windows and I am kinda missing that functionality. This brings to my question, which driver is being used with my installation now?

Dec 8, 2009

i've got a few questions about iptables. i know how to set up ip tables to only allow from an ip address or a subnetting ip addresses. question is how do i allow from 2 different networks? would i need to create 2 lines of entry in iptables to the same port? e: allow 10.168.1.1 and 196.168.1.1 on port 22 is there a way to put all that in 1 line or would i need to create to rules for the port? i know i can use the ssh allow or deny but i'd like to stop access even before it gets to the ssh. stop it at the source kinda thing.

General :: Fedora 10 Stops Allowing Connections?

Jun 3, 2010

I have Fedora 10 set up as a server. Occasionally it will stop allowing connections, such as ssh, http, and samba. This continues until someone hits a key on the keyboard, and then it seems to come back to life and accept connections. At this point, the date and time will be wrong. Judging from monit messages that inform me when it stops allowing connections, I think the time freezes at whatever time it is when it stops allowing said connections.

Power Management has it set for the computer to never turn off. Sleep mode is also disabled in the BIOS.

I thought it was possibly the CMOS battery, but that has been replaced and the issue persists.

Someone previously thought it might have been Network Manager, but that is disabled due to issues it has with a static IP.

Debian :: PulseAudio And ALSA - How These Two Interact

May 8, 2011

Regarding ALSA and PulseAudio - Explanation on how these two interact. After installing Debian I realised that my sound control (Volume Control: HDA Intel ALSA mixer) was different from what I had with Ubuntu where it would display a window called "Sound properties" in which allowed me to control the sound of each program running - I believe this is the PulseAudio aspect. (If I'm wrong at this point please correct me)

Now I have managed to get PulseAudio setup correctly for me (not as easily as Ubuntu but I moved to Debian to learn, not be spoon fed), however the way in which I did it may of been wrong - pretty much just went to synaptic and installed everything with PulseAudio in its name

Currently the sound icon in my top Gnome panel (within the notification area applet) has the ALSA mixer, sometimes when I log on it has the PulseAudio one (Sound preferences window), I don't really mind which one is loaded thanks to the PulseAudio Volume Control program (under Sound & Video). Is there a way though to stick with just one?

Subsequently, I wanted to check some stuffs using Vista, but the computer showed my some prompt that said that my BOOTMGR is missing. However, Fedora still boots and works perfectly. Please what should do? I didn't back up my documents before installing the Fedora. How do I go back to Vista without formatting my hard disk.

Fedora :: Vim Settings Screen Not Allowing Enough Time To Catch It

Whether it is vi or gvim, you can view the current non-default settings by writing ":set" and pressing <ENTER>. However, in FC15, vim clears the settings screen really quickly, not allowing me enough time to catch it. Normally it should pause at the settings screen, and clear it only when I press any key. If others see the same problem, I will file a bug.

Fedora :: Upgrading - System Not Allowing Users Login

Jan 30, 2011

I upgraded my Fedora Core distribution from 12 to 14. Everything worked fine, except for SQUID which refused to upgrade. I then went to rescue and installed SQUID using yum and then restarted the upgrade. It did finally upgrade the system and then asked for a reboot. Well, when I selected the new kernel option in the GRUB options, since I also have Winduhs, it gave a kernel panic. I tried booting into the older kernel and it worked. Now I see the users that are there in the system in the Graphical GUI login greeter screen. But none of the users get authenticated. I used the rescue option and removed graphical login and changed boot level to 3. I also enabled the root user. In the rescue mode, if I do a startx, everything works fine.

I logged off rebooted the system. When I login, I see the version is shown as Fedora Core 14, but the kernel was still the older one with Core 12. I again went to rescue and checked out GRUB and saw that it had no initrd for the new kernel. I created a initrd image with the mkinitrd command and then added it to grub. I again rebooted. This time it shows the correct kernel, but still the system does not allow any of the users to login. All the Logins fail. I have tried going to rescue and going to the system using 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' and doing a startx for Graphical. Everything works, but only with the Rescue mode in the DVD. The normal boot/login sequence does not work.

Incidentally when I do a 'yum distro-sync', I get something like this :

---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-9.20080819.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-11.20100428.fc14 set to be erased
---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-1.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-2.fc14 set to be erased
---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-25.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-29.fc14 set to be erased

It still seems to believe its a Fedora Core 12 system. Another information is that when I leave rescue mode and do a normal boot without installation media, it starts doing some SELinux relabelling and reboots. Any pointers on how I can get the system working. I am able to work with the rescue mode way, with any user, as it does not ask for any password. I can even do startx and work on the GUI. All my data is also there. I just am unable to get the user authenticated using normal boot/login. I have tried using passwd -d username, but it gives an error :
passwd: libuser initialization error: could not open configuration file `/tmp/libuser.ElY0r9': No such file or directory
In fact, I am now in rescue mode only when I am writing and sending this.

My GRUB file is :

I updated last night even though I was already using firefox 3.6. I had a problem with flash last time I updated.
