General :: Fedora 10 Stops Allowing Connections?

Jun 3, 2010

I have Fedora 10 set up as a server. Occasionally it will stop allowing connections, such as ssh, http, and samba. This continues until someone hits a key on the keyboard, and then it seems to come back to life and accept connections. At this point, the date and time will be wrong. Judging from monit messages that inform me when it stops allowing connections, I think the time freezes at whatever time it is when it stops allowing said connections.

Power Management has it set for the computer to never turn off. Sleep mode is also disabled in the BIOS.

I thought it was possibly the CMOS battery, but that has been replaced and the issue persists.

Someone previously thought it might have been Network Manager, but that is disabled due to issues it has with a static IP.

Ubuntu Servers :: Allowing Connections From The Outside World Through SSH?

Jan 9, 2010

I want to set up my laptop to allow connections to certain users with passwords from anywhere over the internet via SSH but I'm unsure about how I would go about doing this. I only thought it would be the case of setting up the open-ssh server on the laptop then, using my external IP and PuTTY on another PC outside of the network, connect to the external IP through port 22 so I tried this and wait 3 or 4 minutes or so and it says the connection times out.

I have also configured my router to use port forwarding but this doesn't seem to help much either and I have LAMP setup to allow connections to external IP : 80. The only thing I am able to do is access the laptop through the local network by using its internal IP's like 127.198.0.1:22 or something. I was wondering if anybody knows if and could tell me how I would do this as I really want to be able to access my home computer/laptop from my work sometimes, especially if I have work at home which is not with me at work or something.

I know this is possible but I'm quite new to this type of thing and don't know what is going wrong. Have I missed something or do I need to change any .conf files or anything?

Ubuntu :: Allowing Incoming Connections On Port 22 From Anywhere?

Jul 19, 2011

I'm trying to get VNC working but I'm getting this error message:

Quote:

ssh: connect to host my_ip_address port 22: Connection refused

When typing:

Quote:

ssh -f -L 5900:localhost:5900 user@my_ip_address x11vnc -safer -localhost -nopw -once -display :0 && sleep 5 && vncviewer localhost:0

I'm trying to follow the instructions here: [URL] but I'm struggling with point 2 & 3:

Quote:

2. If you have previously reconfigured the firewall on your PC, make sure the firewall allows incoming connections on port 22 from anywhere, and on port 5900 from localhost (also known as 127.0.0.1)

3. If your PC is behind a home router, or any other device that uses NAT, configure your router to send connection attempts on port 22 (but not port 5900) to your PC

So my questions are:

1. I installed a fresh version of Ubuntu 11.4, should I be concerned about step 2? If so, how can I allow incoming connections on port 22 from anywhere, and on port 5900 from localhost?

2. Regarding step 3, I'm using NETGEAR model DGN1000 router. Is that something that I should do from the router's setting page or it's some commands that I should pass through SSH?

Servers :: Ubuntu 10.4 Server Stops Accepting Connections After A Period Of Time / Fix It?

Apr 24, 2011

I'm not sure if this belongs in the Server or Networking section of the forums. Anyway, last month I upgraded my server to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since then, I've had a recurring problem wherein after a certain period of time, the server stops accepting network connections. Ubuntu 10 will continue to reject network connections until someone logs into the server locally, after which time network connectivity is restored and the cycle begins anew. Essentially, the server goes into a "half sleep mode". I say half because the computer is still on and the fans are running.

I've done some searching around various forms and initially figured this issue was related to problems with the Network Manager service (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...er/+bug/524454), so I removed the service altogether. However, this problem is still occurring.

I've poured over /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog, but have noticed no irregular behavior. Has anyone else experienced this issues? I'd rather not resort to downgrading back to Gusty Gibbon if I can help it.

I am happy to provide more information if its needed

OpenSUSE Network :: Eth1 Stops Accepting Connections Whenever There Is No SSH Connection Present On Eth0

Oct 2, 2010

I recently setup a new SUSE box for the purposes of acting as an ftp/sftp server. It's currently setup to run ProFTPD 1.3.3.rc3 and mod_sftp/0.9.7. The server has two internal network interfaces eth0 and eth1. eth0 is purely for internal use to accept ftp and ssh. eth1 is outward facing and receives connections from the WAN via SFTP over port 22. The problem I am facing is that after half hour to an hour eth1 stops accepting connections whenever there is no SSH connection present on eth0. I can't figure out why this is happening.

ProFTPD is setup as follows: SocketBindTight directive is on, default server and port are commented out.

[code]...

When the external interface is unreachable the proftpd and proftpd-sftp logs show no record of any connection attempt. I have noticed however if I leave eth0 down eth1 stays contactable without problem. Can anyone give me some pointers on what I can check to find out why this may be happening.

Fedora :: Upgrading - System Not Allowing Users Login

Jan 30, 2011

I upgraded my Fedora Core distribution from 12 to 14. Everything worked fine, except for SQUID which refused to upgrade. I then went to rescue and installed SQUID using yum and then restarted the upgrade. It did finally upgrade the system and then asked for a reboot. Well, when I selected the new kernel option in the GRUB options, since I also have Winduhs, it gave a kernel panic. I tried booting into the older kernel and it worked. Now I see the users that are there in the system in the Graphical GUI login greeter screen. But none of the users get authenticated. I used the rescue option and removed graphical login and changed boot level to 3. I also enabled the root user. In the rescue mode, if I do a startx, everything works fine.

I logged off rebooted the system. When I login, I see the version is shown as Fedora Core 14, but the kernel was still the older one with Core 12. I again went to rescue and checked out GRUB and saw that it had no initrd for the new kernel. I created a initrd image with the mkinitrd command and then added it to grub. I again rebooted. This time it shows the correct kernel, but still the system does not allow any of the users to login. All the Logins fail. I have tried going to rescue and going to the system using 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' and doing a startx for Graphical. Everything works, but only with the Rescue mode in the DVD. The normal boot/login sequence does not work.

Incidentally when I do a 'yum distro-sync', I get something like this :

---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-9.20080819.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package dialog.i686 0:1.1-11.20100428.fc14 set to be erased
---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-1.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package diffstat.i686 0:1.51-2.fc14 set to be erased
---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-25.fc12 set to be downgraded
---> Package diffutils.i686 0:2.8.1-29.fc14 set to be erased

It still seems to believe its a Fedora Core 12 system. Another information is that when I leave rescue mode and do a normal boot without installation media, it starts doing some SELinux relabelling and reboots. Any pointers on how I can get the system working. I am able to work with the rescue mode way, with any user, as it does not ask for any password. I can even do startx and work on the GUI. All my data is also there. I just am unable to get the user authenticated using normal boot/login. I have tried using passwd -d username, but it gives an error :
passwd: libuser initialization error: could not open configuration file `/tmp/libuser.ElY0r9': No such file or directory
In fact, I am now in rescue mode only when I am writing and sending this.

General :: Allowing Multiple Simultaneous Rsyncs To Play Nice Together?

Jun 1, 2011

Each day I need to copy N files from a source location to a mirror at a specific time (where N is very large). Let's say I tell multiple CPUs to each run an rsync simultaneously on a subset of the files (network and disk bandwidth are not an issue). Ideally each CPU would be responsible for a disjoint subset of the N files, but in practice this is sometimes hard to guarantee. (Some of the source files might be "claimed" by more than one CPU.) As a result, sometimes rsync I and rsync J will both try to copy file F at the same time.

Using rsync -avz --delete --temp-dir=/tmp remote:/path/to/source/ /path/to/dest/, let's say rsyncs I and J both see this situation to start:

[Code]...

Now rsync J finishes copying but generates an error when it tries to move its version of FileB to /path/to/dest/ because there's already another FileB there that it didn't see when it started.

Does one of rsync's many options somehow handle this situation? Ideally I'd like an option that tells rsync, "Believe in yourself. You can do no wrong. Feel free to overwrite anything your little heart desires." so that it wouldn't complain about the FileB that has suddenly appeared mid-execution

General :: File-permissions On Read-only Media: Allowing For Access Without Chmod?

Mar 14, 2010

I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.

I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.
