Debian :: Ssh Connection Is Getting Stuck?

Aug 8, 2010

I am finding the following problem. Just wanted to know anyone else has experienced these types of issues. My laptop is debian squeeze x86 with custom 2.6.34.1 hand compiled kernel whereas the desktop where I am doing ssh is a dual boot system with debian squeeze x86_64 with custom 2.6.34.1 kernel and ubuntu 10.04 x86_64. Whenever the desktop is running ubuntu, there is no problem with ssh. But when it is running squeeze many times ssh hangs, just after issuing the command. Sometimes it asks for password and then do nothing, otherwise it just remains at the ssh line itself Even the escape (~.) does not have any effect on that. Only thing possible is to kill the ssh process. There used to be no problem last week, but I think after an upgrade either on laptop or desktop, things went this way.

Debian :: Wired Network Connection Stuck On Connecting

Nov 3, 2015

As a random thought I purged the firmware-realtek package and rebooted. Ethernet works fine now??

Fresh Jessie installed this morning with KDE. Wired worked fine during installation and initial boot. Reboot after package installation and only wireless is working right now. I did install the realtek firmware as part of my normal package list.

This is /var/log/syslog when it stopped working, and hasn't reconnected since. Cable is fine as it was working perfectly with a live Ubuntu shortly before I installed the system with Debian.

Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connection Stuck At (Setting Network Address)

Oct 9, 2015

I have Debian 8.2 with KDE 4.14 and everything runs perfect, except for the internet connection. This problem happens randomly when I turn on my machine. Sometimes when the desktop loads, the connection is already settled.

But sometimes when the desktop loads, the wifi icon is still loading and keeps stuck at "setting network address". Since this problem happens randomly I really don't know what is happening here. My wifi chip is this:

Code: Select all01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 130 (rev 34)

This is the problem:

I installed Debian with non-free firmware because of this chip.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Stuck In Loop As No Net Connection?

Jan 22, 2010

I haven't come across this bit of 'elitism' before but it seems with this install one MUST have a working net connection. Why is this? How do people without net at all get to install Karmic Koala?

I am using the alternate install from a USB stick (UNetbootin) and I have to use a separate USB WiFi dongle (not the Wifi built into this Thinkpad T43). The installer does not recognise the difference, so consequently it fails to find the dongle and gets stuck in a loop between 'Net access failed' and 'Searching for a local mirror' - I don't understand why it needs a mirror at this stage anyway as I downloaded the correct and complete .iso

Major catch22 for me as I am attempting a fresh install due to the upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 having totally screwed up my system - no ALSA, App menu gone doo-lally, etc etc - far too much mess to sort out.

On top of that, the trackpoint button has stopped working altogether and no amount of Fn+F8 switching makes any difference. Hmm.

Edit: Trackpoint somehow got disabled in BIOS during above aborted install.

I have a machine with an MSI motherboard and gigabit ethernet. However, it only reports being connected at 100Mb/s. I have tried using ethtool to force the speed to gigabit but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. Does anyone know a way other than ethtool to set the network speed?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Wireless Connection Stuck On Activating

May 6, 2011

I've been having problems with connecting to my router with my wireless card. Sometimes knetworkmanager attempts to the connect to my wireless via it's saved profile but it just stays on "Activating" for about 45 seconds then just stops. This only started happening a few days ago, so maybe the new kernel update has something to do with it?

I've tried to debugging the problem myself and have found if I reboot my router knetworkmanager can connect immediately to the wireless router, but also something interesting I found was is I assigned a IP Address and DNS manually on the saved profile it would connect with no problem (No reboot of router required), so it is indicating there is a problem with getting network settings. I've confirmed that the wireless card is not hard or soft blocked through rfkill.

I was using the box standard ath5k driver when this problem started happening and even went as far as a complete reinstall but ironically enough on first boot from a fresh install my wireless could not connect with the problem described above. I've since moved to the compat-wireless drivers but the problem remains.

I checked a couple of logs, one log file of significance was the wpa_suppliment log which was full of these messages: From all my debugging I can only assume that the kernel update is a possible cause for all of this as the problem occurring on first boot of a fresh install sounds like a general bug. I've got all of the requested information about my wireless card below, hope I've got everything:

Debian Configuration :: Stuck At Screen Before Login

Aug 23, 2010

I'm new to the world of linux I've started using it just one week ago.I installed Debian Lenny without problem, and after 2 or 3 days managed to make my wifi and ATI card to work. Today I tried installing compiz, through the packet manager that comes with the system. It was downloaded and installed successfully, so I rebooted to see it effects (I guess) but after that, I wasn't able to get to the login screen anymore, it just gets stuck at the "gray" screen before that (I took a pic of what screen i'm talkin about). Then I accessed in console mode and removed all the compiz packages, tried dpkg-reconfigure gnome and gnome-core, then reinstalled the ati drivers, but the problem is still there.I don't want to reinstall the whole system, I don't think a simple problem like this is enough to do so, but sincerely I'm completly lost.

Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connection Which Then Is Sent To A Wired Connection

Sep 22, 2015

The situation: The office has a WiFi network on one DSL line, which is used for our VoIP call center, and a wired network for our internal network and the majority of web surfing/traffic . Part of the office must be temperature controlled/monitored - we have a rather nice digital thermometer which is WiFi enabled.I have a Debian Wheezy box with a WiFi card and ethernet connection

What I'm trying to accomplish:Connect wifi enabled thermometer to WiFi network so it can automatically send temp updates (currently I have to do it manually via USB)Have the Wheezy box accept the downloaded file then send it to a back up server in the wired network

Side things that may be useful : Prefer to use wired connection for internet and apt and suchWiFi connection will really just be used for connecting to the thermometer

This [URL] .... topic got me thinking that there might be a way to bring the two networks together, but I don't know if that will wreak havoc on things. I know, the Windows and Mac OS don't like having ethernet and wifi at the same time, might Linux be better for this?

v&n had this to offer in the prior thread [URL] .... which I'll be doing more research on.

Debian Configuration :: Ondemand Governor Stuck At 70% Of CPU's Capacity

Aug 25, 2011

Whenever I unplug my laptop it gets slugishly slow, and I don't understand why. I noticed that when on battery I cannot by any means make the cpu work at its full speed (1.7Ghz) even with the performance governor; it always stays at 1.2Ghz. When unplugged from AC, cpufreq-info also tells me the speed can vary between 600MHz and 1.2Ghz, even though it reports the max hardware speed of 1.7Ghz. Besides, I have tested the laptop on AC power at 1.2GHz and it seems a whole lot faster than when on battery at the same speed. Are there any more "power-friendly" reductions in... say for example, graphics card? It would impact UI redesign significantly (and it sure as hell looks slow). How can I customize (or at least disable) these inconvenient cpu speed reductions?

Debian Multimedia :: Firefox HTML5 Stuck At 360p

Aug 22, 2015

YouTube now automatically serves html5 content if it detects you are using firefox version 40 or above. Unfortunately as a result, all youtube videos are now served to me at 360p resolution, and there is no way to change that on the youtube web page.

Before upgrading firefox, I could watch hd videos using flash. The ability to switch to html5 was also available on [URL] .... But with the later version of firefox, the option to switch back to using flash is no longer there on that page.

When I could view both flash and html5 videos (with the older firefox), I found that html5 played back very poorly. flash, despite being a known resource hog, actually played back better (with no h/w acceleration of flash in linux, I resigned myself to expect to use faster PCs to run flash hd at full screen). Which is a great pity, as we all know flash is disappearing, but it appears I now have an even bigger issue with html5. Where's the hd video?

So how can I get a better html5 experience? My machine is an i3 with GTS250 nVidia running Stretch.

The problem of only getting 360p resolution is probably a bug in firefox. Once I can get hd, I am then uncertain if firefox could handle it.

The advice of setting 'media.mediasource.enabled' in about:config to true to get higher resolutions did not work for me.

When I do that, the [URL] .... says I have:

HTMLVideoElement, WebM VP8 and Media source Extensions support, and
H.264, MSE & H.264 and MSE & WebM VP9 unsupported.

I have hardware acceleration enabled in firefox, and have the OpenH264 Video Codec (Cisco) plugin installed.

Some more info here: [URL] ....

I could switch back to using flash by using a user-agent switcher to fool youtube I have an older firefox, but that is a poor solution.

Debian Multimedia :: Stuck At Grub Rescue When Remove Systemd

Jan 10, 2015

I thought I'd have a go at putting back sysvinit to run the start up daemons, after I discovered that upgrading to jessie removed it and slapped on systemd.

I didn't have any problems at all with systemd, infact it was pure speed at start-up, but after some reading I thought I'd like to go back to usual start-up scripts.

What I did was to boot a Live Debian and mount and chroot into my Debian system, then I ran

Code: Select allsudo apt-get remove --purge --auto-remove systemd
sudo apt-get install sysvinit-core sysvinit sysvinit-utils

On reboot, I hit a grub rescue prompt which says error: file not found.

Trying the methods to get that sorted out gets stuck with "unknown file system" after I use ls and ls(hd1,msdos2) -as well as other combinations - it only seems to work for a plugged in flash drive.

Then I chroot again and run update-grub and grub-install /dev/sdb but reboot still stops at grub rescue.

So I wonder, firstly, why replacing systemd mucked up grub. Then, besides re-install of systemd, how do I get a booting system?
